The architectural heritage of the 20th century is affected by several conservation problems in terms of material preservation, structural analysis, and reuse. Among these, material degradation and durability issues are the ones that have the most effect on the health state and, consequently, the survival of the constructions of the period. In order to conduct a proper analysis for preservation purposes, an interdisciplinary approach is necessary.

Gonadal sex determination is a complex genetic process by which an embryonic primordium is driven to form an ovary or a testis, which requires a delicate dosage balance involving many genes. Disruption in this molecular pathway can lead to differences of sex development (DSD). Although some genetic mechanisms leading to 46,XY DSD have been elucidated, little is known about copy-number variation (CNV) causing testicular or ovotesticular 46,XX DSD.

BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to investigate the role of von Willebrand factor (vWF), the vWF-cleaving protease, ADAMTS13, the composition of thrombus, and patient outcome following mechanical cerebral artery thrombectomy in patients with acute ischemic stroke. MATERIAL AND METHODS A prospective cohort study included 131 patients with ischemic stroke (<6 hours) with or without intravenous thrombolysis. Interventional procedure parameters, hemocoagulation markers, vWF, ADAMTS13, and histological examination of the extracted thrombi were performed.

The survival of plants as sessile organisms depends on their ability to cope with environmental challenges. Of key importance in this regard is the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA). ABA not only promotes seed dormancy but also triggers growth arrest in postgermination embryos that encounter water stress.

The secondary structure of an RNA molecule plays an integral role in its maturation, regulation, and function. However, the global influence of this feature on plant gene expression is still largely unclear. Here, we use a high-throughput, sequencing-based, structure-mapping approach in conjunction with transcriptome-wide sequencing of rRNA-depleted (RNA sequencing), small RNA, and ribosome-bound RNA populations to investigate the impact of RNA secondary structure on gene expression regulation in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Background: Major challenges in periodontology include understanding the pathophysiology, the interplay between various components of the host response, parallels with other diseases and identifying biomarkers of the disease.
Objectives: Four reviews were compiled with the aim of better understanding: (1) the role of polymorphic nuclear leucocytes (PMNs), i.e.

Topical calcineurin inhibitor use has been implicated in a flushing reaction associated with ethanol ingestion. This adverse effect has mostly been described as occurring with the application of tacrolimus ointment, and one report associated it with the use of pimecrolimus cream. We present three cases of ethanol-induced flushing in patients who used topical pimecrolimus.

Chromatin remodeling is emerging as a central mechanism for patterning and differentiation in multicellular eukaryotes. SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling ATPases are conserved in the animal and plant kingdom and regulate transcriptional programs in response to endogenous and exogenous cues. In contrast with their metazoan orthologs, null mutants in two Arabidopsis thaliana SWI/SNF ATPases, BRAHMA (BRM) and SPLAYED (SYD), are viable, facilitating investigation of their role in the organism.

The purines ATP and adenosine can act as a coordinated team of transmitters. As extracellular adenosine is frequently derived from the enzymatic dephosphorylation of released ATP, the distinct actions of the two purines can be synchronized. In retinal ganglion cells (RGCs), stimulation of the P2X7 receptor for ATP leads to increased intracellular Ca2+ and death.

Purpose: The goal of this literature review was to determine the validity and policy relevance of recent estimates from many countries of Alzheimer's disease (AD) costs.
Design And Methods: We searched Medline and other databases for English-language peer-reviewed journals on total, direct, indirect, and per case cost of AD that used 1985-2000 data. We adjusted costs of U.

The cellular and molecular pathways initiated by traumatic brain injury (TBI) may compromise the function and structural integrity of mitochondria, thereby contributing to cerebral metabolic dysfunction and cell death. The extent to which TBI affects regional mitochondrial populations with respect to structure, function, and swelling was assessed 3 hours and 24 hours after lateral fluid-percussion brain injury in the rat. Significantly less mitochondrial protein was isolated from the injured compared with uninjured parietotemporal cortex, whereas comparable yields were obtained from the hippocampus.

Representations of task context play a crucial role in shaping human behavior. While the nature of these representations remains poorly understood, existing theories share a number of basic assumptions. One of these is that task representations are discrete, independent, and non-overlapping.

We designed a new class of aromatically modified exocyclic peptides based on the structure of CD4 by engineering one of the cysteine residues in a peptidomimetic derived from the CDR3 region of the CD4 molecule. All three species mediate inhibition of T-cell proliferation at concentrations ranging from 10 to 100 microM. The mimetics CD4-Cys and CD4-Met bind to sCD4 with affinities ranging from 1 to 2 microM, while CD4-Ser shows poor binding in radioisotope assay.

Background: Hypothermia is used clinically to prevent neurologic injury but the degree of protection which it affords at various levels of the nervous system in humans is difficult to establish.
Material/methods: The temporal changes in EEG amplitude and somatosensory evoked potential (SEP) amplitudes in a patient experiencing acute normothermic hypoxemia, a patient experiencing acute circulatory arrest at moderate hypothermia and a collection of patients undergoing deep hypothermic circulatory arrest were analyzed to determine the rate at which changes occur during acute lack of oxygen delivery at various temperatures.
Results: In each case, it was found that more rostrally generated potentials disappeared more quickly than more peripheral potentials.

Hyperinsulinaemia in the fasting state and a blunted insulin secretory response to acute glucose stimulation are commonly observed in obesity associated non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Hyperlipidaemia is a hallmark of obesity and may play a role in the pathogenesis of this beta-cell dysfunction because glucose metabolism in pancreatic beta cells may be altered by the increased lipid load. We tested this hypothesis by assessing the chronic effect of oleic acid on glucose metabolism and its relationship with glucose-induced insulin release in beta HC9 cells in tissue culture.
