Background: Endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) provides less invasiveness and lower morbidity than microsurgical clipping, albeit with a long-term recurrence rate estimated at 20%. We present our single-center experience and a literature review concerning surgical clipping of recurrent previously coiled aneurysms.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of nine (9) patients' data and final clinical/angiographic outcomes, who underwent surgical clipping of IAs in our center following initial endovascular treatment, over a 12-year period (2010-2022).

Strictures in inflammatory bowel disease, especially Crohn's disease (CD), are characterized by increased intestinal wall thickness, which, according to recent accumulating data, is mainly attributed to the expansion of the intestinal smooth muscle layers and to a lesser extent to collagen deposition. In this review, we will discuss the role of intestinal smooth muscle cells (SMCs) as crucial orchestrators of stricture formation. Activated SMCs can synthesize extracellular matrix (ECM), thus contributing to intestinal fibrosis, as well as growth factors and cytokines that can further enhance ECM production, stimulate other surrounding mesenchymal and immune cells, and increase SMC proliferation via paracrine or autocrine signaling.

In this work, we present a comprehensive protocol for achieving hole doping in graphene through exposure to nitric acid (HNO) vapors. We demonstrate gradual p-type surface doping of CVD-grown graphene on a Si/SiO substrate by thermally depositing nitric acid molecules to form self-assembled charge transfer complexes. Detailed analysis of charge carrier concentration and Fermi energy shifts was conducted using Raman, X-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopies (XPS/UPS).

Background: A considerable number of symptomatic patients leave the cardiac catheterization lab without a definitive diagnosis for their symptoms because no epicardial stenoses are found. The significance of disorders of coronary microvasculature and vasomotion as the cause of symptoms and signs of ischemia has only recently been appreciated. Today we have a wide spectrum of invasive coronary physiology tools but little is known about when and how these tools are used in clinical practice.

Hypothetical axions provide a compelling explanation for dark matter and could be emitted from the hot solar interior. The CERN Axion Solar Telescope has been searching for solar axions via their back conversion to x-ray photons in a 9-T 10-m long magnet directed toward the Sun. We report on an extended run with the International Axion Observatory pathfinder detector, doubling the previous exposure time.

For a long time, snakes were presented as a textbook example of a group with gradual differentiation of homologous ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes. However, recent advances revealed that the ZZ/ZW sex chromosomes characterize only caenophidian snakes and certain species of boas and pythons have nonhomologous XX/XY sex chromosomes. We used genome coverage analysis in four non-caenophidian species to identify their sex chromosomes, and we examined the homology of sex chromosomes across phylogenetically informative snake lineages.

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) are key enzymes for the biotechnological exploitation of lignocellulosic biomass, yet their efficient application depends on the in-depth understanding of their mechanism of action. Here, we describe the structural and mutational characterization of a C4-active LPMO from Myceliophthora thermophila, MtLPMO9F, that belongs to auxiliary activity family 9 (AA9). MtLPMO9F is active on cellulose, cello-oligosaccharides and xyloglucan.

Multifaceted interactions between marine bacteria and particulate matter exert a major control over the biogeochemical cycles in the oceans. At the microbial scale, free-living bacteria benefit from encountering and harnessing the plumes around nutrient-releasing particles, like phyto-plankton and organic aggregates. However, our understanding of the bacterial potential to reshape these eutrophic microhabitats remains poor, in part because of the traditional focus on fast-moving particles that generate ephemeral plumes with lifetime shorter than the uptake timescale.

Biochar has been prepared by pyrolysis of (the vegetable sponge produced by ) and activated by mixing the pyrolyzed powder with KOH and pyrolyzed again. Non-activated and activated biochar have both been structurally and then electrochemically characterized to record their differences and assess their suitability as bifunctional oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts in Zn-air batteries. Non activated biochar carries several functional groups; however, the activation procedure led to a material with mainly O and Mg groups.

New psychoactive substances (NPS)-designed to mimic various legal or illegal substances-are an emerging worldwide health problem. Their identification and quantification in either complex seized samples or powders are critical; moreover, their determination in biological fluids is an intriguing goal in the forensic toxicology field. Synthetic cathinones are one of the most important groups among NPS.

There is a global initiative to reduce the use of restrictive care practices in mental health settings. Variations in the reported rates across regions complicate the understanding of their use and tracking trends over time. However, it remains unclear whether these discrepancies reflect real differences in the implementation of these practices or are sourced from inconsistencies in incident classification and reporting methods.
