Tamoxifen (TMX) is used as adjuvant therapy for estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer cases due to its affinity and inhibitory effects. However, about 30% of cases show drug resistance, resulting in recurrence and metastasis, the leading causes of death. A literature review can help to elucidate the main cellular processes involved in TMX resistance.

Department of Economics and International Relations-DERI, Faculty of Economics-FCE, Interdisciplinary Center for Research and Studies in Agribusiness-CEPAN, Bioeconomics Applied to Agribusiness Research Group, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul-UFRGS, Brazil. Electronic address:

Due to its essentiality and scarcity, water is subject to stress from the supply and demand side. The SDG and many methods for assessing water stress (WS) are based on water supply, even though the total water supply is uncontrollable by humans in the short term. Conversely, from a water demand perspective, WS arises from the deliberate and manageable use of water to produce goods and services, with few methods proposing to evaluate WS.

Stress response is essential for the organism to quickly restore physiological homeostasis disturbed by various environmental insults. In addition to well-established physiological cascades, stress also evokes various brain and behavioral responses. Aquatic animal models, including the zebrafish (), have been extensively used to probe pathobiological mechanisms of stress and stress-related brain disorders.

Challenges and perspectives of the β-galactosidase enzyme.

Appl Microbiol Biotechnol

July 2021

Faculty of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine (FAMV), Postgraduate Program in Food Science and Technology (PPGCTA), University of Passo Fundo (UPF), Passo Fundo, RS, Brazil.

The enzyme β-galactosidase has great potential for application in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to its ability to perform the hydrolysis of lactose, a disaccharide present in milk and in dairy by-products. It can be used in free form, in batch processes, or in immobilized form, which allows continuous operation and provides greater enzymatic stability. The choice of method and support for enzyme immobilization is essential, as the performance of the biocatalyst is strongly influenced by the properties of the material used and by the interaction mechanisms between support and enzyme.

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) has been considered a suitable model organism to assess the evolutionarily conserved bases of behavioral and neuroendocrine responses to stress. Depending on the nature of the stressor, prolonged stress may elicit habituation or evoke long-term changes in the central nervous systems (CNS) often associated with various neuropsychiatric disorders. Conspecific alarm substance (CAS) and net chasing (NC) constitute chemical and physical stressors, respectively, which cause aversive behaviors and physiological changes in fishes.

Laboratory of Experimental Neuropsychobiology, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Natural and Exact Sciences Center, Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS, Brazil.

The ability of the nervous system to detect a wide range of noxious stimuli is crucial to avoid life-threatening injury and to trigger protective behavioral and physiological responses. Pain represents a complex phenomenon, including nociception associated with cognitive and emotional processing. Animal experimental models have been developed to understand the mechanisms involved in pain response, as well as to discover novel pharmacological and non-pharmacological anti-pain therapies.

Emerging contaminants (EC) have been detected in effluents and drinking water in concentrations that can harm to a variety of organisms. Therefore, several technologies are developed to treat these compounds, either for their complete removal or degradation in less toxic by-products. Some technologies applied to the treatment of EC, such as adsorption, advanced oxidative processes, membrane separation processes, and bioremediation through microalgal metabolism, were identified by thematic maps.

Background: School cafeterias can promote poor eating habits, as these retail outlets have a variety of foods considered to be nonnutritive and unhealthy. However, despite the need for effective preventive strategies, there is still disagreement on the best approach due to the lack of evidence on interventions to prevent and treat obesity in the school settings.

Objective: We aim to verify the efficacy of an educational intervention program to improve the hygienic conditions and the composition of the menu offered in school cafeterias in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

The search for better zootechnical indexes such as feed conversion, daily weight gain, uniformity, and lower bird mortality has become a priority within the poultry industry. The use of food restriction programs has emerged as an alternative to improve these rates as well as to mitigate the effect of the increased cost of nutrition over the past few years. In this work, the feed conversion (FC), daily weight gain (DWG), uniformity, and mortality of male broilers submitted to two food restriction programs were evaluated; one program reduced food by 10% and the other by 20% in relation to the feeding program suggested by the Cobb500 strain.
