Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to explore how inflammatory biomarkers relate to corneal epithelial measurements in patients with keratoconus compared to healthy individuals.
  • It involved a comparison of tear cytokine levels and hair cortisol concentrations from 100 patients, divided into 48 with keratoconus and 52 healthy controls, using advanced measurement techniques.
  • Results showed that keratoconus patients had significantly higher levels of certain cytokines and cortisol, with notable correlations found between IL6 levels and specific epithelial thickness metrics.

Antibiotics and indomethacin as perioperative management for cerclage: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Eur J Obstet Gynecol Reprod Biol

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics, Paulista School of Medicine - Federal University of São Paulo (EPM-UNIFESP), São Paulo, SP, Brazil; Discipline of Woman Health, Municipal University of São Caetano do Sul (USCS), São Caetano do Sul-SP, Brazil. Electronic address:

Objective: Prematurity complications remain the leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality. Although cerclage shows promise in preventing preterm birth, it remains unclear whether perioperative management, such as the use of antibiotics or indomethacin, offers any additional benefit.

Study Desing: We conducted a systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis comparing the use of indomethacin, antibiotics, and their combination as perioperative management for cerclage versus cerclage alone.

Background: Glycolic acid (GA) has been tested as enamel and dentin etchant, and final irrigant for smear layer removal. This study evaluated the effects of GA and ultrasonic activation (US) on smear layer removal, dentin penetration, dentin structure and bond strength of the root dentin filling material.

Material And Methods: The root canals of 210 teeth were distributed into four test groups: smear layer removal (N=50), dentin penetration (N=50), dentin structure (N=10) and bond strength (N=100).

Institute of Health, University of Passo Fundo, Passo Fundo, RS, Brazil; Medical School, University of Passo Fundo, Passo Fundo, RS, Brazil; Graduate Program in Environmental Sciences, University of Passo Fundo, Passo Fundo, RS, Brazil. Electronic address:

The β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is a neurotoxin produced by cyanobacteria and diatoms and related by triggered neurodegeneration. The exposure to neurotoxins has also been reported by causing emotional and neuroendocrine effects and these effects may be sex-specific. However, the effects of BMAA on emotions and pain, as well as neuroendocrine modulations remain poorly understood.

Integrating Whey Processing: Ultrafiltration, Nanofiltration, and Water Reuse from Diafiltration.

Membranes (Basel)

September 2024

Post-Graduate Program in Food Science and Technology, University of Passo Fundo, Campus I, L1 Building, BR 285, District São José, 611, Passo Fundo 99052-900, Brazil.

This work proposes an integrated production of whey protein concentrate (WPC) and lactose and the recovery of water from diafiltration (DF) steps. Whey protein and lactose can be concentrated using ultrafiltration and nanofiltration, respectively, and both can be purified using DF. However, DF uses three-fold the initial volume of whey.

Postgraduate Program in Dentistry, School of Dentistry, University of Passo Fundo, Campus I - BR 285, Passo Fundo, RS 99052-900, Brazil. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the fatigue lifetime of reduced-diameter dental implants placed in either bovine rib or polymer-based bone models.
  • Results indicated that implants in bovine ribs had better data dispersion and longer fatigue lifetimes compared to those in polymer models, though no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups.
  • Bovine ribs are suggested to be a more effective material for accelerated life testing due to their superior performance in data reliability.
