The objective of the present study was to evaluate the implementation of Enhanced Recovery in Surgery (ERS) in French obstetrics and gynecology departments. To achieve this objective, we drafted an online questionnaire about ERS protocols for cesarian sections and hysterectomies with a benign indication and put a hyperlink on the 'French National College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians' (Collège National des Gynécologues et Obstétriciens Français) website. We obtained 112 analyzable responses.

Background: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has resulted in a dramatic rise of the demand for medical devices and drugs. In this context, an important shortage of programmable syringe pumps, used to administrate different drugs in intensive care units, was seen. The opportunity of administrating combinations of five intensive care units selected drugs (Sufentanil, Clonidine, Loxapine, Midazolam, and Ketamine) was considered.

Frequently silent until advanced stages, bone fragility associated with chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disease (CKD-MBD) is one of the most devastating complications of CKD. Its pathophysiology includes the reduction of active vitamin D metabolites, phosphate accumulation, decreased intestinal calcium absorption, renal alpha klotho production, and elevated fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) levels. Altogether, these factors contribute firstly to secondary hyperparathyroidism, and ultimately, to micro- and macrostructural bone changes, which lead to low bone mineral density and an increased risk of fracture.

Background: Some health care systems have set up referral trauma centers to centralize expertise to improve trauma management. There is scant and controversial evidence regarding the impact of provider's volume on the outcomes of trauma management.
Objective: To evaluate the impact of hospital volume on the outcomes of renal trauma management in a European health care system.

Background: Randomized controlled trials showed the efficacy of family therapy for anorexia nervosa during adolescence, but studies examining its long-term beneficial effect are still needed. This article presents the results of a 54-month post-randomization follow-up of a previously reported randomized controlled trial that compared two post-hospitalization outpatient treatment programs: Treatment As Usual alone versus Systemic Family Therapy added to Treatment As Usual.
Methods: A consecutive series of 60 female adolescents with anorexia nervosa (DSM-IV) were randomized (30 per group).

The objective of the present research was to review the state of the art on the consequences of drinking coffee at the different levels of the gastrointestinal tract. At some steps of the digestive process, the effects of coffee consumption seem rather clear. This is the case for the stimulation of gastric acid secretion, the stimulation of biliary and pancreatic secretion, the reduction of gallstone risk, the stimulation of colic motility, and changes in the composition of gut microbiota.

Kings and queens of eusocial termites can live for decades, while queens sustain a nearly maximal fertility. To investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying their long lifespan, we carried out transcriptomics, lipidomics and metabolomics in Macrotermes natalensis on sterile short-lived workers, long-lived kings and five stages spanning twenty years of adult queen maturation. Reproductives share gene expression differences from workers in agreement with a reduction of several aging-related processes, involving upregulation of DNA damage repair and mitochondrial functions.

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) with ~1%-2% prevalence is the most common congenital heart defect (CHD). It frequently results in valve disease and aorta dilation and is a major cause of adult cardiac surgery. BAV is genetically linked to rare left-heart obstructions (left ventricular outflow tract obstructions [LVOTOs]), including hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and coarctation of the aorta (CoA).

Background: The suspected or actual effects on health of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDC) and their ubiquitous presence in everyday life justify the implementation of health promotion interventions. These interventions should ideally be applied during critical windows like pregnancy. Perinatal environmental health education interventions may help to reduce EDC exposure during pregnancy.

Atypical Spitzoid melanocytic tumors are diagnostically challenging. Many studies have suggested various genomic markers to improve classification and prognostication. We aimed to assess whether next-generation sequencing studies using the Tempus xO assay assessing mutations in 1711 cancer-related genes and performing whole transcriptome mRNA sequencing for structural alterations could improve diagnostic agreement and accuracy in assessing neoplasms with Spitzoid histologic features.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most frequent primary liver cancer. Macroautophagy/autophagy inhibitors have been extensively studied in cancer but, to date, none has reached efficacy in clinical trials. In this study, we demonstrated that GNS561, a new autophagy inhibitor, whose anticancer activity was previously linked to lysosomal cell death, displayed high liver tropism and potent antitumor activity against a panel of human cancer cell lines and in two hepatocellular carcinoma in vivo models.

Primary lactose intolerance is caused by a genetically programmed loss in lactase production after 5-6 years of age. Milk and dairy products are often incriminated as a cause of gastrointestinal symptoms. Recent studies show that lactase persistence in adult life correlates with higher anthropometric indexes and an altered metabolic profile.

The attitudes of medical students towards the clinical importance of neuroanatomy have been little studied. Because it has been reported that medical students find neuroanatomy difficult and can have 'neurophobia', here we test the hypothesis that early-stage medical students across Europe have a low regard for neuroanatomy's clinical relevance. The work was conducted under the auspices of the Trans-European Pedagogic Research Group (TEPARG), with just over 1500 students from 12 European medical schools providing responses to a survey (52% response rate) that assessed their attitudes using Thurstone and Chave methodologies.

Background: Histopathologically ambiguous melanocytic lesions lead some pathologists to list multiple diagnostic considerations in the pathology report. The frequency and circumstance of multiple diagnostic considerations remain poorly characterized.
Methods: Two hundred and forty skin biopsy samples were interpreted by 187 pathologists (8976 independent diagnoses) and classified according to a diagnostic/treatment stratification (MPATH-Dx).

Background: Uveal melanoma (UM), a rare malignant tumor of the eye, is predominantly observed in populations of European ancestry. UMs carrying a monosomy 3 (M3) frequently relapse mainly in the liver, whereas UMs with disomy 3 (D3) are associated with more favorable outcome. Here, we explored the UM genetic predisposition factors in a large genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 1142 European UM patients and 882 healthy controls .

Background: The risk of drug-drug interactions (DDI) has become a major issue in cancer patients. However, data in sarcoma patients are scarce. We aimed to evaluate the frequency and the factors associated with DDI with antitumor treatments, and to evaluate the impact of a pharmacist evaluation before anticancer treatment.

Less morbidity is considered among the advantages of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) for HCC patients. However, our previous international, multi-institutional, propensity score-based study of emerging laparoscopic repeat liver resection (LRLR) failed to prove this advantage. We hypothesize that these results may be since the study included complex LRLR cases performed during the procedure's developing stage.
