Social insects are well known for their extremely rich chemical communication, yet their sex pheromones remain poorly studied. In the thermophilic and thelytokous ant, Cataglyphis cursor, we analyzed the cuticular hydrocarbon profiles and Dufour's gland contents of queens of different age and reproductive status (sexually immature gynes, sexually mature gynes, mated and egg-laying queens) and of workers. Random forest classification analyses showed that the four groups of individuals were well separated for both chemical sources, except mature gynes that clustered with queens for cuticular hydrocarbons and with immature gynes for Dufour's gland secretions.

Ants have recently emerged as useful models for the study of olfactory learning. In this framework, the development of a protocol for the appetitive conditioning of the maxilla-labium extension response (MaLER) provided the possibility of studying Pavlovian odor-food learning in a controlled environment. Methods: A prospective single-center observational study was conducted on stenotic bicuspid and tricuspid human aortic valves. According to their potential role in valve vascular and valvular calcification, a decision was taken to include miR- 92a, miR-141, and miR-223 in this analysis.

Divergence in communication systems should influence the likelihood that individuals from different lineages interbreed, and consequently shape the direction and rate of hybridization. Here, we studied the role of chemical communication in hybridization, and its contribution to asymmetric and sexually selected introgression between two lineages of the common wall lizard (Podarcis muralis). A joint application of experimental and computational approaches has revealed the exceptionally high attitude of crabrolin, a 13-residue peptide with sequence FLPLILRKIVTAL-NH , to adopt alpha-helix conformation not only in membrane-mimicking solvents but also in the presence of a not negligible amount of water. Our study shows that this propensity essentially resides in the intrinsic thermodynamic stability of alpha-helix conformation whose kinetic stability is drastically reduced in water solvent. Our analysis suggests that this is due to two effects enhanced by water: a more local effect consisting of the demolition of intra-peptide H-bonds, essential for the alpha-helix formation, and a bulk - electrostatic - effect favoring conformational states more polar than alpha-helix.

The influence of the physical activity environment in the home and at work on cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and objectively-measured physical activity has not been extensively studied. We recruited 147 women with a (mean ± SD) age of 54 ± 7 years and without evidence of chronic disease. The physical activity environment was assessed by self-report (Assessing Levels of PHysical Activity or ALPHA questionnaire), CRF using a submaximal step test, usual physical activity using combined heart rate and accelerometry, as well as by a validated questionnaire (Recent Physical Activity Questionnaire).

In an evaluation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the IARC Monograph 111, the Mechanisms Subgroup was tasked with assessing the strength of evidence on the potential carcinogenicity of CNTs in humans.
