Resting state EEG in patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) is characterized by an increase of power in the delta frequency band and a concurrent decrease in the alpha range, equivalent to a weakening or disappearance of the alpha peak. Prolongation of Intrinsic Neural Timescales (INTs) is also associated with DOCs. Together, this raises the question whether the decreased alpha peak relates to the prolonged INTs and, importantly, how that can be used for diagnosing the state of consciousness in DOC individuals.

Obesity is one of the leading causes of the development of insulin resistance, diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in children. With the progression of insulin resistance, both glucose and free fatty acid (FFA) plasma levels are elevated, leading to cardiometabolic complications such as impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), type 2 diabetes, and liver fat accumulation. In this study, oral minimal models were used to estimate insulin sensitivity indexes (SI and SI) in 375 adolescents with obesity.

Electronic address:
Background: Heart failure is common, complex, and often associated with coexisting chronic medical conditions and a high mortality. We aimed to assess the epidemiology of people admitted to hospital with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), including the period covering the COVID-19 pandemic, which was previously not well characterised.
Methods: In this retrospective, cohort study, we used whole-population electronic health records with 57 million individuals in England to identify patients hospitalised with heart failure as the primary diagnosis in any consultant episode of an in-patient admission to a National Health Service (NHS) hospital.

Background: Ketamine administration during stable propofol anesthesia is known to be associated with an increase in bispectral index (BIS) but a "deepening" in the level of hypnosis. This study aimed to evaluate the association between the effect-site concentration of ketamine (CeK) and 2 electroencephalogram (EEG)-derived parameters, the BIS and spectral edge frequency (SEF95), after the administration of a ketamine bolus. Secondary aims included investigating the BIS and SEF95 variations with time and changes in the surgical pleth index (SPI).

The healthcare system has been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, result-ing in an increase in secondary and co-infections among patients. Factors like pulmonary dam-age and weakened immune systems make patients more susceptible to fungal infections. Mu-cormycosis, an opportunistic fungal infection, prospers in environments with limited oxygen, and elevated glucose levels due to conditions such as diabetes and steroid use, as well as in acidic environments from metabolic acidosis and diabetic ketoacidosis, where it demonstrates heightened germination ability.

Background And Purpose: Ataxia, tremors, dysarthria, and sometimes impaired cognition are the signs of cerebellum involvement in multiple sclerosis (MS). These symptoms affect up to 80% of patients and are usually hard to treat. To find the underlying involvement of the cerebellum in MS, we assessed the microstructural alterations with DTI in the cerebellar peduncles of the affected subjects.

Objective: Access to crizanlizumab, a disease-modifying therapy for sickle cell disease (SCD), was provided through a managed access program (MAP, NCT03720626). The present analysis evaluated the impact of 12 months of crizanlizumab treatment on vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs), and on the use of opioids for VOC-related pain relief, in patients with SCD from the MAP.
Methods: From June 2018 to January 2023, 112 patients with a history of recurrent VOCs completed 12 months of crizanlizumab (5 mg/kg) treatment and were monitored for adverse events (AEs).

Purpose: This study evaluates the potential of within-individual Metabolic Connectivity (wi-MC), from dynamic [F]FDG PET data, based on the Euclidean Similarity method. This approach leverages the biological information of the tracer's full temporal dynamics, enabling the direct extraction of individual metabolic connectomes. Specifically, the proposed framework, applied to glioma pathology, seeks to assess sensitivity to metabolic dysfunctions in the whole brain, while simultaneously providing further insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms regulating glioma progression.

Aims: The use of ultrasound (US)-guided venous puncture for cardiac pacing/defibrillation lead placement may minimize the risk of periprocedural complications and radiation exposure. However, none of the published studies have been sufficiently powered to recommend this approach as the standard of care. We compare the safety and efficacy of ultrasound-guided axillary venous puncture (US-AVP) vs.

In this work our aim was to identify early biomarkers in plasma samples associated with mortality in children with perinatal HIV treated early in life, to potentially inform early intervention targeting this vulnerable group. 20/215 children (9.3%) with perinatal HIV, enrolled within 3 months of age died prematurely within the first year of the study, despite early ART initiation.

The aim of the study was to report the outcome of primary localized low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS), sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF), and hybrid LGFMS/SEF (H-LGFMS/SEF). Patients with primary localized LGFMS, SEF, or H-LGFMS/SEF, surgically treated with curative intent from January 2000 to September 2022, were enrolled from 14 countries and 27 institutions. Pathologic inclusion criteria were predefined by expert pathologists.

Chronic constipation (CC) is one of the most common disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). The management of CC requires specific skills due to its complex and multifactorial pathophysiology and its multistep treatment. The aims of this study were to evaluate the availability and the use of diagnostic tools for CC in Italy and the therapeutic management of CC by Italian gastroenterologists (GEs).

Although the ankle-brachial index (ABI) presents overall satisfactory accuracy, its sensitivity in the context of screening strategies does not ensure the detection of all individuals with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), especially in clinical situations where there is calcification of the arterial media layer. This study evaluated the accuracy of ABI in screening PAD among individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) in a community setting. An observational study included only individuals with DM.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer related deaths worldwide, although some patients with early-stage disease can be cured with surgical resection. Standardised reporting of all clinically relevant pathological parameters is essential for best patient care and is also important for ongoing data collection and refinement of important pathological features that impact patient prognosis, staging and clinical care. Using the established International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting (ICCR) procedure, a representative international expert panel of nine lung pathologists as well as an oncologist was convened.
