Aging is a biological process characterized by the progressive deterioration of physiological functions that occurs through the accumulation of macromolecular and cellular damage. This phenomenon impairs tissue function and is a risk factor for many disorders including cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disorders, and cancer. A recent study has enumerated nine cellular and molecular hallmarks that represent common denominators of aging and together determine the aging phenotype, highlighting the concept of aging plasticity.

CD44 splice variants are assumed to have a critical role in the malignant progression of many human tumors. However, the clinical significance of CD44 expression is not yet understood. The malignant degeneration of a cystic teratoma of the ovary is a rare complication which different authors place at between 0.8 to 4%. Adenocarcinomas represent a relatively rare complication, 8% of secondary cancers, those of thyroid origin being reported in only 5 cases.
