Article Synopsis
  • The study addresses the challenges in diagnosing and managing Menière's disease (MD) due to a lack of high-quality evidence, leading to variations in practice.
  • A panel of experts identified and agreed on five quality indicators (QIs) to standardize and improve healthcare practices for MD patients by evaluating care measures.
  • These QIs focus on critical aspects of MD treatment, including accurate diagnosis and the management of therapies, aiming to enhance patient outcomes and guide quality improvement initiatives in healthcare.

Lymphocytoma cutis reflects an exaggerated local immunologic reaction to a stimulus presenting on the head, neck, or upper extremities as a firm 1-3 cm erythematous and/or violaceous plaque or nodule. However, lymphocytoma cutis may be difficult to treat due to the variety of causative agents and the lack of reported successful treatments and outcomes. Here, we present a case of 68-year-old female with recalcitrant lymphocytoma cutis resistant to other first-line therapies including tacrolimus ointment and steroids.

Background: The relative frequency of ischaemic versus haemorrhagic stroke among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has not been clearly described. Moreover, no recent meta-analysis has investigated the outcomes of patients with CKD treated with thrombolysis for acute ischaemic stroke. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the proportion of stroke subtypes and the outcomes of thrombolysis in CKD.

In 2017, The Ottawa Hospital initiated a unique-in-Canada quality improvement initiative by opening a novel, multi-specialist limb-preservation clinic. We sought to describe the structure, processes, and initial outcomes of the clinic and evaluate whether it is achieving its mandate of providing high-quality wound clinical care, education, and research. We conducted a descriptive prospective cohort study alongside a nested study of 162 clinic patients requiring serial assessments.

Dupilumab is the only biologic therapy currently approved in Europe and the United States for severe atopic dermatitis in patients 6 years of age or older. Off-label use is rationalized in younger children with severe atopic dermatitis. Decisions about vaccination for children on dupilumab are complex and depend on both the child's current treatment and the type of vaccination required.

Objective: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is an ideal entity for quality indicator (QI) development, providing treatment challenges resulting in variable or substandard care. The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery recently updated their SSNHL guidelines. With SSNHL demonstrating a large burden of illness, this study sought to leverage the updated guidelines and develop QIs that support quality improvement initiatives at an individual, institutional, and systems level.

MicroRNA in Human Acute Kidney Injury: A Systematic Review Protocol.

Can J Kidney Health Dis

April 2021

Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine and Kidney Research Centre, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, The University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital, ON, Canada.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of hospitalization with high morbidity and mortality for which no effective treatments exist and for which current diagnostic tools have limitations for earlier identification. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that have been implicated in the pathogenesis of AKI, and some miRNAs have shown promise as therapeutic tools in animal models of AKI. However, less is known about the role of miRNAs in human AKI.

Introduction: Several jurisdictions have adopted a more conservative approach to anemia in patients receiving dialysis amid safety concerns from target hemoglobin studies. It is largely unknown if this has contributed to a change in clinical outcomes.

Methods: A national registry was used to identify 35,945 adult patients who initiated and were maintained on dialysis for ≥90 days in Canada from January 2007 to December 2015.

A real-world single-centre analysis of alemtuzumab and cladribine for multiple sclerosis.

Mult Scler Relat Disord

July 2021

University of Ottawa and The Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Department of Medicine, The Ottawa Hospital General Campus, Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, 501 Smyth Road, Box 601, Ottawa ON K1H 8L6, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: Highly active MS may warrant higher efficacy treatments for disease control. However, these often confer more risk and have not been compared in head-to-head clinical trials, making relative efficacy and safety difficult to interpret. Alemtuzumab and cladribine are two high-efficacy treatments given as discrete courses separated by one year, followed by a durable response that potentially does not require ongoing treatment.

Background: Recent evidence suggests that biologic therapy with targeted activity within the Type 2 inflammatory pathway can improve the clinical signs and symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). There remains a population in CRSwNP that despite medical therapy and endoscopic sinus surgery have persistent signs and symptoms of disease. Therefore, biologics, monoclonal antibody agents, could be beneficial therapeutic treatments for these patients.

Soluble cytokine receptors can influence immune responses by modulating the biological functions of their respective ligands. These effects can be either agonistic or antagonistic and a number of soluble cytokine receptors have been shown to play critical roles in both maintenance of health and disease pathogenesis. Soluble IL-7Ra (sCD127) is one such example.

Background: The 2005 International Health Regulations (IHR (2005)) require States Parties to establish National Focal Points (NFPs) responsible for notifying the World Health Organization (WHO) of potential events that might constitute public health emergencies of international concern (PHEICs), such as outbreaks of novel infectious diseases. Given the critical role of NFPs in the global surveillance and response system supported by the IHR, we sought to assess their experiences in carrying out their functions.

Methods: In collaboration with WHO officials, we administered a voluntary online survey to all 196 States Parties to the IHR (2005) in Africa, Asia, Europe, and South and North America, from October to November 2019.

Pharmacologic Treatment of Idiopathic Chilblains (Pernio): A Systematic Review.

J Cutan Med Surg

September 2021

12365 Division of Dermatology, Department of Medicine, University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Idiopathic chilblains is a cold-induced inflammatory condition that causes significant morbidity. When preventative measures alone are inadequate, oral nifedipine is generally recommended as first-line pharmacologic therapy. Given the natural course of this spontaneously remitting/relapsing condition, controls are needed to critically appraise studies and determine the value of treatments.
