Article Synopsis
  • Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) continues to be a major health challenge globally, even with improved treatment options.
  • This study evaluated the impact of empagliflozin, an SGLT2 inhibitor typically used for managing type 2 diabetes, on heart function in ACS patients by analyzing data from four randomized controlled trials with a total of 701 participants.
  • Results showed that empagliflozin significantly improved certain left cardiac parameters, like reducing left ventricular end-systolic volume and mass, although it did not significantly change left ventricular ejection fraction or end-diastolic volume, indicating its potential as a complementary treatment in ACS cases.

Background & Objectives: Rigid ring and Flexible band are techniques used to repair tricuspid valve regurgitation. The comparison between both techniques' effectiveness is controversial in the literature. We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the safety and efficacy of rigid ring versus flexible band for tricuspid valve repair in patients with tricuspid valve regurgitation.

Microribonucleic acids (miRNAs) have emerged as a new category of biomarkers for many human diseases like cancer, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disorders. MicroRNAs can be detected in various body fluids including blood, urine and cerebrospinal fluid. However, the literature contains conflicting results for circulating miRNAs, which is the main barrier to using miRNAs as non-invasive biomarkers.

Patients with heart failure (HF) and iron deficiency are at increased risk of adverse clinical outcomes. We searched databases for randomised controlled trials that compared IV iron to placebo, in patients with HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). A total of 7,813 participants, all having HFrEF with 3,998 receiving IV iron therapy, and 3,815 control recipients were included.

Background: Despite advancements in the management of HIV infection, the factors contributing to stroke development among HIV-positive individuals remain unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to identify and evaluate the relative risk factors associated with stroke susceptibility in the HIV population.

Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases to identify studies investigating the risk of stroke development in HIV patients and assessing the role of different risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, smoking, sex, and race.

Sleep paralysis (SP) is a mixed state of consciousness and sleep, combining features of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep with those of wakefulness. The exact cause of SP is unknown, and its prevalence varies among the studies. We aim to identify SP's global prevalence, the affected population's characteristics, and the SP's clinical picture.

Laboratory Genetics Molecular and Cellular, Department of Molecular Genetics Applied, Faculty of Nature and Life Sciences, University of Science and Technology of Oran "Mohamed Boudiaf ", B.P 1505 El M'Naouar, 31000 Oran, Algeria.

Milk protein genetic polymorphisms are associated with economically important traits in dairy cattle. The objective of this study is to genotype a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) responsible for the amino acid changes in the beta-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) variants A and B on 85 unrelated DNA representing Algerian cattle populations: Chelifienne (28), Cheurfa (31) and Guelmoise (26). The method used is the PCR-RFLP (Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism).

Metallic trace element dynamics in Paracentrotus lividus from Algeria: Environmental large-scale survey and human health risk assessment.

Sci Total Environ

March 2024

SciSca SRL, 5330 Maillen, Belgium; Station de Recherches Sous-marines et Océanographiques, Punta Revellata, BP33, 20260 Calvi, France.

This paper evaluates the dynamics of Metallic Trace Elements (MTEs; Cd, Pb, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni and Co) in the gonads of the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus collected in five sites: four contaminated and one reference, along the Western coast of Algeria, recontextualizes this contamination within a wider geographical distribution area throughout 83 sites among the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic and focuses on the potential risk of their consumption on human health for the first time in Algeria. The trace element pollution index places Algeria, and generally the North African coasts, as the region most contaminated by MTEs. The geographical variability in metal contamination levels is greater in the Mediterranean Sea than in the Atlantic.
