Laboratory of Clinical and Metabolic Nutrition (LNCM), Faculty of Nature and Life Sciences, University of Oran 1 Ahmed Ben Bella, BP 1524 El m'nouer, 31100 Oran, Algeria. Electronic address:

Aims: Fish by-products valorization on account of their richness in bioactive compounds may represent a better alternative to marine products with a view to economic profitability and sustainable development. In this study, we compared the effect of sardine by-product proteins (SBy-P), with those of the fillets (SF-P) or casein (Cas), on growth parameters, serum leptin level, lipids disorders, lipid peroxidation and reverse cholesterol transport, in diet-induced obese rats.

Main Methods: Obesity was induced by feeding rats a high-fat diet (20% sheep fat), during 12 weeks.

Extreme ecosystems can be a source of untapped microorganisms to produce novel bioactive compounds of industrial interest. Consequently, in this work, 32 actinomycetes were isolated from 6 soil samples collected from Algerian Sahara in searching for untapped producers of novel antimicrobial compounds. All the isolates were further subjected to antimicrobial screening against pathogenic bacteria, yeast and fungi.

Detailed phytochemical characterization and bioactive properties of Myrtus nivelii Batt & Trab.

Food Funct

September 2017

Laboratory of Plant Biochemistry and Natural Products, Department of Biology, Faculty of Nature and Life Sciences, University of Oran 1, Ahmed Ben Bella, 1524EL M Naouer 31000 Oran, Algeria.

The endemic Algerian myrtle, Myrtus nivelii Batt & Trab., was evaluated for its bioactive properties, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic and antibacterial activities, and correlated with the individual phenolic compounds identified in its crude aqueous extract and subsequent organic fractions (ethyl acetate and butanol). Flavonols, such as myricetin, kaempferol and quercetin glycoside derivatives, were the major phenolic compounds found, along with the presence of ellagitannins.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the total phenolic and lipid content, fatty acids profiles and antioxidant activities of aqueous and solvent extracts of the red seaweed , through six different investigations. The present study demonstrated that phenol contents (mg gallic acid/g dry weight) were highest in the aqueous and methanolic extracts, followed by the ethanolic, hydroethanolic and hydromethanolic extracts. The lowest phenol contents were identified in the three remaining extracts: Butanolic, petroleum ether and acetone extracts.

The aim of the present work was to extend our knowledge on the variability of trace metals in sea urchin tissues, focusing on seasonal fluctuations (2010 February for "winter," May for "spring," August for "summer," November for "autumn") in the three different sampling sites of Algerian west coast (Oran Harbor (S1), Ain Defla (S2), and Hadjaj (belonging to Mostaganem City S3)). For this purpose, the bioavailability (metal indices) and bioaccumulation (metal concentrations in soft tissues) of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd), the physiological characteristics (e.g.

Assessment of hypoxic stress in 44 women with breast cancer in the West Algeria.

Gulf J Oncolog

September 2016

Biology Laboratory of Development and Differentiation, Faculty of Science of Nature and Life, University of Oran 1 Ahmed Ben Bella, Algeria.

Aim: The objective of this study was to evaluate the expression of hypoxia-inducible transcription factor 1α (HIF1α) protein profile among women with breast cancer in a population of western Algerian and to correlate the intensity of this expression with prognosis histological grade Scarff Bloom and Richardson (SBR) of the disease and the age of the patients.

Methods: We used a kit provided by Life Science Inc (UScnk) for a sandwich enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative measurement of in vitro HIF1α in plasma in 44 patients and 44 controls in a population of western Algerian. Then we looked for the correlation between the intensity of the expression of HIF1α and prognosis histological grade SBR and the age of the patients studied.

Native mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis are used as bioindicator organisms to assess the concentration levels and toxic effects of persistent chemicals, polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and heavy metals using biomarker responses, such as catalase (CAT), glutathione s-transferase (GST), and condition indices, for the Algerian coast. The results show that mussels of Oran Harbour are extremely polluted by PCBs and PAHs, i.e.

Metal-ligand interactions give rise to a wide variety of metal complexes with various physical properties and chemical behaviours and numerous practical applications. The ability of the zinc ion to enhance the structural stability of many proteins by electrostatic interactions or by co-ordination with surrounding amino acids makes it the most important metal ion found in biological systems. In this paper, we highlight the importance of non-covalent interaction established between a metal ion and its environment in stabilizing biomolecules.

Background: Many studies have investigated the role of 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T gene polymorphism in essential hypertension (EH), but with conflicting results.

Aim: To determine the eventual association between 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T gene polymorphism and hypertension in a sample of Algerian population from the Oran city.

Methods: A case-control study has been performed in 154 subjects including 82 hypertensives defined as subjects with elevated systolic blood pressure SBD≥140mmHg and or sustained diastolic blood pressure DBP≥90mmHg, and 72 normotensive subjects.

September 2016

NorGenoTech AS, Totenvegen 2049, 2848 Skreia, Norway; Department of Nutrition, University of Oslo, PO Box 1046, Blindern, 0317 Oslo, Norway. Electronic address:

The mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis collected from a noncontaminated site (Chaib Rasso) were transplanted during one, three and six months at Ghazaouet harbor (GH), areas with a strong gradient of pollution. The micronucleus test (MN) was selected to monitor the impact of contamination, along with physiological indexes (condition index CI and organo-somatic indexes RI and GSI). The results show a negative correlation of MN variation in gill cells with CI but a positive correlation with transplantation duration.

Neural network (NN) models were evaluated for the prediction of suspended particulates with aerodynamic diameter less than 10-μm (PM10) concentrations. The model evaluation work considered the sequential hourly concentration time series of PM10, which were measured at El Hamma station in Algiers. Artificial neural network models were developed using a combination of meteorological and time-scale as input variables.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

January 2016

Laboratory of Environmental science and Material studies, University of Oran 1-Ahmed Benbella, Oran, Algeria.

Air quality forecasting system has acquired high importance in atmospheric pollution due to its negative impacts on the environment and human health. The artificial neural network is one of the most common soft computing methods that can be pragmatic for carving such complex problem. In this paper, we used a multilayer perceptron neural network to forecast the daily averaged concentration of the respirable suspended particulates with aerodynamic diameter of not more than 10 μm (PM10) in Algiers, Algeria.
