Gene expression profiling of the canine placenta during normal and antigestagen-induced luteolysis.

Gen Comp Endocrinol

October 2019

Institute of Veterinary Anatomy, Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich (UZH), Zurich, Switzerland. Electronic address:

The domestic dog is the only domestic animal species that does not produce steroids in the placenta and instead relies on luteal steroids throughout pregnancy. Nevertheless, the canine placenta is highly responsive to steroids, and withdrawal of progesterone (P4) affects the feto-maternal unit, initializing the parturition cascade. Similar effects can be observed during antigestagen-induced abortion.

Coenzyme Q10 increases absence seizures in WAG/Rij rats: The role of the nitric oxide pathway.

Epilepsy Res

August 2019

Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Ondokuz Mayis, 55139 Samsun, Turkey. Electronic address:

Several results have suggested that coenzyme Q10 has protective effects in different models of epilepsy. This study was designed to investigate the acute effect of coenzyme Q10 in genetic absence epileptic WAG/Rij rats. We also determined the role of l-arginine (l-Arg), a biological precursor of nitric oxide (NO), and 7-nitroindazole (7-NI), an inhibitor of neuronal NO synthase (nNOS), on the effects of coenzyme Q10.

Limited information exists on the link between purinergic class P2X7 receptors (P2X7Rs) and calcium ion channels in epilepsy; no data has been reported regarding the interaction between P2X7Rs and T-type calcium ion channels in epilepsy. Thus, this study is an evaluation of the role that T-type calcium ion channels play in the effect of P2X7Rs on penicillin-induced epileptiform activity. In the first set of experiments, P2X7R agonist BzATP (at 25-, 50-, 100- and 200-μg doses), P2X7R antagonist A-438079 (at 5-, 10-, 20- and 40-μg doses) and T-type calcium ion channel antagonist, NNC-550396 were administered for electrophysiological analyses 30 min after penicillin injection (2.

August 2018

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department Anatomy, University of Ondokuz Mayıs, Samsun, Turkey.

This study was conducted with the aim of determining the morphology, distribution and heterogeneity of mast cells in the tongues of seagull (Larus fuscus), common buzzard (Buteo buteo), goose (Anser anser), white stork (Ciconia ciconia) and Gerze rooster. The study used five samples of tongue material from each of the healthy adult avian species. The samples were fixed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin (NBF) solution, then, after routine tissue follow-up, the samples blocked with paraplast.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of a fluoride varnish with added casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate treatment on the prevention of enamel erosion, and it compared the results with those of other fluoride varnishes. Fifty enamel specimens obtained from bovine incisors were randomly divided into five groups ( = 10) based on the type of surface pretreatment used: intact enamel (Group 1); intact enamel+erosive cycles (Group 2); intact enamel+MI varnish+erosive cycles (Group 3); intact enamel+Clinpro White varnish+erosive cycles (Group 4); and intact enamel+Duraphat varnish+erosive cycles (Group 5). The specimens were subjected to erosive cycles for five days.

August 2017

Department of Animal Sciences and Division of Nutritional Sciences, University of Illinois, 1207 West Gregory Drive, Urbana, IL 61801 USA.

Background: The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of overfeeding a moderate energy diet and a 2,4-thiazolidinedione (TZD) injection on blood and hepatic tissue biomarkers of lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and inflammation as it relates to insulin sensitivity.

Results: Fourteen dry non-pregnant cows were fed a control (CON) diet to meet 100% of NRC requirements for 3 wk, after which half of the cows were assigned to a moderate-energy diet (OVE) and half of the cows continued on CON for 6 wk. All cows received an intravenous injection of 4 mg TZD/kg of body weight (BW) daily from 2 wk after initiation of dietary treatments and for 2 additional week.

Previous experimental studies have shown that various anesthetics alter the effects of cannabinoid agonists and antagonists on the cardiac response to different stimuli. Since no data have shown an interaction between urethane and cannabinoid signaling in epilepsy, we examined the suitability of urethane with regard to testing the effects of a cannabinoid CB1 receptor agonist and an antagonist on penicillin-induced epileptiform activity in rats. Permanent screw electrodes for electrocorticographic (ECoG) recordings, and a permanent cannula for administration of the substances to the brain ventricles, were placed into the cranium of rats.

Relaxin (RLN) is a key hormone of pregnancy in mammals best known for its involvement in connective tissue remodeling. In the domestic dog, placental RLN is the only known endocrine marker of pregnancy. However, knowledge is sparse regarding the spatio-temporal expression of RLN and its receptors (RXFP1 and RXFP2) in the canine uterus and placenta.

Statement Of Problem: In recent years, the use of resin-matrix ceramics and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) abutments has been suggested to absorb excessive stresses on dental implants. However, only a few studies have evaluated the effect of these materials on stress distribution in implants and peripheral bone structure.

Purpose: The purpose of this finite element analysis was to evaluate the biomechanical behaviors of resin-matrix ceramics and PEEK customized abutments in terms of stress distribution in implants and peripheral bone.

Article Synopsis
  • Most studies on dental laser sintering systems mainly focus on the accuracy of restorations, neglecting the significance of bond strength at the metal-ceramic interface, which is crucial for restoration longevity.
  • This in vitro study compared porcelain bond strength of cobalt-chromium metal frameworks produced via four different methods: conventional lost-wax, milling, direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), and laser cusing.
  • Results showed that laser sintering methods yielded the highest bond strength, and all methods, except DMLS, had adhesive or mixed bond failures, suggesting that laser sintering is effective for ensuring strong metal-ceramic bonds.
