Background: Alcohol use in early pregnancy increases the risk for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Women who engage in heavy drinking and become pregnant when they are not actively trying to conceive are at heightened risk for alcohol-exposed pregnancies. Identifying factors associated with greater risk for alcohol-exposed pregnancies is critical for prevention.

Background: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is increasingly common in the pediatric population and may increase risk for developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) in people with MASLD. Oxidized high-density lipoprotein (oxHDL) and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL) are modified, pro-atherosclerotic lipoproteins that are increased in adults with MASLD and CVD but have not been reported in adolescents with MASLD.

Purpose: To determine if oxLDL and oxHDL are increased in adolescents with MASLD.

Elevated lipid metabolism is one of hallmarks of malignant tumors. Lipids not only serve as essential structural components of biological membranes but also provide energy and substrates for the proliferation of cancer cells and tumor growth. Cancer cells meet their lipid needs by coordinating the processes of lipid absorption, synthesis, transport, storage, and catabolism.

Background: The addition of IV triapine to chemoradiation appeared active in phase I and II studies but drug delivery is cumbersome. We examined PO triapine with cisplatin chemoradiation.

Methods: We implemented a 3 + 3 design for PO triapine dose escalation with expansion, starting at 100 mg, five days a week for five weeks while receiving radiation with weekly IV cisplatin for locally advanced cervical or vaginal cancer.

Dysregulated lipid metabolism, characterized by the accumulation of lipid deposits on Bruch's membrane and in drusen, is considered a key pathogenic event in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The imbalance of lipid production, usage, and transport in local tissues, particularly in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), is increasingly recognized as crucial in AMD development. However, the molecular mechanisms governing lipid metabolism in the RPE remain elusive.

Purpose To determine whether fluorine 18 (F) fluorothymidine (FLT) PET imaging alone or combined with Mount Sinai Acute GVHD International Consortium (MAGIC) biomarkers could help identify subclinical gastrointestinal graft versus host disease (GI-GVHD) by day 100 following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Materials and Methods F-FLT PET imaging was analyzed in a prospective pilot study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier no.

Exploring the phenotypic spectrum and osteopenia mechanisms in Yunis-Varón syndrome.

Genet Med Open

March 2024

Medical Genetics Division, Department of Pediatrics, CHU Sainte-Justine, Montreal, QC, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • Biallelic variants in specific genes cause Yunis-Varón syndrome (YVS), which involves issues like skeletal deformities, facial abnormalities, and neurological problems.
  • A study of five new YVS cases revealed symptoms aligning with YVS and neurological conditions, such as brain malformations and developmental delays.
  • Research showed that in mice, osteopenia (low bone density) was more linked to reduced bone formation than bone degradation, emphasizing the need for further studies on genetic impacts and symptoms.

PFKFB3 protein in adipose tissue contributes to whole body glucose homeostasis.

FASEB J

December 2024

Department of Biochemistry and Physiology, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA.

Age-dependent changes in adipose tissue are thought to play a role in development of insulin resistance. A major age-dependent change in adipose tissue is the downregulation of key proteins involved in carbohydrate metabolism. In the current study, we investigate the role of 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase 3 (PFKFB3) a key governor of the rate of glycolysis in adipocytes via the synthesis of fructose-2,6-bisphosphate that was significantly downregulated in aged mice.

Prevalence of Diabetic Retinopathy Among Native Americans with Diabetes at a Tribal Clinic in Oklahoma.

J Racial Ethn Health Disparities

December 2024

Dean McGee Eye Institute, University of Oklahoma, 608 Stanton L Young Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK, 73104, USA.

Purpose: Native Americans (NAs) have the highest prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) of any racial group in the USA and are therefore at higher risk for diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME). This study estimated the prevalence of DR and DME among NAs receiving eye exams at the Citizen Potawatomi Nation (CPN) clinic, a tribal clinic in Oklahoma serving members of multiple tribes, and characterized risk markers associated with the presence and severity of DR.

Methods: A retrospective chart review identified tribal members with DM who received dilated retinal fundus exams at the CPN clinic between 2021 and 2023.

How are pro- and anti-cannabis messaging exposures related to US young adult cannabis use-related factors?

Department of Prevention and Community Health, Milken Institute School of Public Health, George Washington University, 950 New Hampshire Ave NW, Washington, DC 20052, USA.

Given the diverse sources of cannabis messaging and potential differential effects, this study examined pro- and anti-cannabis messaging exposure overall and via specific channels in relation to cannabis-related perceptions (social acceptability and harm) and behaviors (use status, intentions and frequency; past-year quit attempts). Multivariable regression analyses of 2023 survey data from 4031 US young adults (Mage = 26.29, 59.

Objective: Sjögren's Disease (SjD) subjects have decreased lacrimal/salivary gland function. Studies have proposed that autoantibodies targeting G-protein-coupled muscarinic acetylcholine-type-3-receptor (M3R) are potential clinical markers for SjD. We hypothesized that rabbits/mice immunized with 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE)-modified/unmodified Ro60 will develop an autoimmunity, specifically a SjD phenotype, thus expressing increased levels of anti-M3R antibodies.

Introduction Chest pain is a common, expensive cause of admission to the hospital from the Emergency Department (ED). The History, ECG, Age, Risk Factors, and Troponin (HEART) score is a risk stratification tool often used to determine the disposition of chest pain patients. This study evaluates the association of age, gender, HEART score, diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), hypercholesterolemia, family history (Fam Hx), and tobacco use with major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) and hospital readmission.
