Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess current knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding hearing impairment and screening referrals in patients with diabetes among providers who have a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CBDCE) Certification.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey created through Qualtrics was emailed to health care providers in the United States with CDCES certification. Providers responded regarding knowledge and importance of hearing impairment compared to other diabetes complications, when they would refer a patient to an audiologist, the percentage of patients referred, and awareness of over-the-counter hearing aids.

To compare deprescribing rates of stress ulcer prophylaxis (SUP) between children receiving "usual-dose" (<4 mg/kg/day methylprednisolone equivalents) versus "high-dose" (≥4 mg/kg/day methylprednisolone equivalents) corticosteroids for status asthmaticus in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). This retrospective, cohort study included children <18 years of age receiving corticosteroids for status asthmaticus and SUP from 1/1/2017 to 6/31/2022. The primary objective was to compare the number of children that were deprescribed SUP following transition from the PICU to the floor and at hospital discharge between groups.

The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence, severity, contributing risk factors associated with vasopressin-induced hyponatremia in neonates and infants <3 months of age in the NICU. Psychiatric outcomes are commonly observed in individuals with repeated concussions, though their underlying mechanism is unknown. One potential mechanism linking concussion with psychiatric symptoms is inflammation-induced activation of the kynurenine pathway, which is thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of mood disorders. Midodrine is an oral vasopressor option that allows for discontinuation of intravenous vasopressors for patients with cardiovascular conditions. It does not have a US Food and Drug Administration-labeled indication for use in children, and there is a paucity of literature in patients ≤6 years of age. Objective: Leadership development assessments are a critical component of student pharmacists' understanding and development of effective team strategies.

Methods: The 5 Voices tool, developed by GiANT Worldwide, was incorporated into the leadership curriculum across 2 colleges of pharmacies for second-year Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) students. One public land-grant institution administers the assessment in the fall semester during a 2-h class session as part of a leadership elective leadership course and a private liberal arts institution distributes the 5 Voices assessment to all students during a 1-h spring semester required course.

Methocarbamol is an antispasmodic muscle relaxant and was the fourth most-prescribed muscle relaxant by volume in the United States in 2021. Intravenous (IV) methocarbamol contains the excipient, polyethylene glycol (PEG), which has been implicated in metabolic acidosis and nephrotoxicity. Intravenous methocarbamol was first approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1959 and at that time the IV methocarbamol prescribing information warned of PEG-associated adverse drug events in patients living with renal impairment; however, the manufacturer acknowledged data were lacking to objectively support this claim.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with interoceptive processing dysfunctions, but the molecular mechanisms underlying this dysfunction are poorly understood. This study combined brain neuronal-enriched extracellular vesicle (NEEV) technology and serum markers of inflammation and metabolism with Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to identify the contribution of gene regulatory pathways, in particular micro-RNA (miR) 93, to interoceptive dysfunction in MDD. Individuals with MDD (n = 41) and healthy comparisons (HC; n = 35) provided blood samples and completed an interoceptive attention task during fMRI.

Methods: In this cross-sectional investigation, we used a 2-step discovery and confirmatory strategy utilizing 2 independent samples (sample 1: 288 participants, sample 2: 196 participants) to examine the association between circulating indicators of metabolic health (leptin and adiponectin) and brain structures in individuals with major depressive disorder.

Sialorrhea, defined as an excess flow of saliva or excessive secretions, is common in patients with cerebral palsy and other neurologic disorders and is associated with clinical complications such as increased risk of local skin reactions, infections, aspiration, pneumonia, and dehydration. Upon failure of non-pharmacologic measures, clinicians have several noninvasive pharmacologic options available to manage sialorrhea. This review of the literature provides detailed descriptions of medications used, efficacy, safety, and practical considerations for use of non-injectable pharmacologic agents.

Nephrotoxicity is a significant concern during the development of new drugs or when assessing the safety of chemicals in consumer products. Traditional methods for testing nephrotoxicity involve animal models or 2D in vitro cell cultures, the latter of which lack the complexity and functionality of the human kidney. 3D in vitro models are created by culturing human primary kidney cells derived from urine in a 3D microenvironment that mimics the fluid shear stresses of the kidney.

Background And Purpose: Assessment of the Pharmacists' Patient Care Process (PPCP) in pharmacy curricula has been reported in a variety of contexts, but results have not described individual student performance in a controlled ambulatory care skills laboratory to purposefully identify medication-related problems (MRP) and develop plans for resolution.

Educational Activity And Setting: One of five MRPs was embedded within standardized medication profiles to facilitate student completion of three graded ambulatory care medication history encounters in a third-year skills laboratory. Data analysis included student performance in aggregate and according to MRP type from the first to the third medication history encounter.
