Lupus
January 2025
Arthritis and Clinical Immunology, Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Oklahoma City, OK, USA.
Objectives: Describe the history of the use of the term "lupus" as a disease and to point out the inaccuracies of previous lupus historical articles and correct the historical record.
Methods: An exhaustive review of Medieval and later texts regarding the use of the term "lupus" as it was used for the name of a disease as well as personal communications with Medieval experts who have studied this topic.
Results: There are three possible first uses of "lupus" as a disease: an affidavit written in 963 AD by Eraclius (Bishop of Liège, Belgium), in a 12th century historical account of the Bishop of Liège, falsely ascribed to the 9th century Bishop Herbernus, or in an 1170 AD letter written by Pierre de Blois about the death of archbishop Stephan du Perche.

Background: Evidence is limited in gynecologic cancers on best practices for clinical trial screening, but the risk of ineffective screening processes and subsequent under-enrollment introduces significant cost to patient, healthcare systems, and scientific advancement. Absence of a defined screening process makes determination of who and when to screen potential patients inconsistent allowing inefficiency and potential introduction of biases. This is especially germane as generative artificial intelligence (AI), and electronic health record (EHR) integration is applied to trial screening.

Visual processing involves numerous neuro-ophthalmic pathways that enable humans to perceive and interact with the world. These visual pathways can negatively impact visual perception and decision-making. The Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex (VOR) is a compensatory mechanism that stabilizes gaze on a target during head movement, such as running or turning.

Purpose: Although the B-cell receptor (BCR) signal plays a critical role in CLL cell survival and a target of current therapies (ibrutinib targets Bruton's tyrosine kinase; idelalisib targets PI3Kδ), contribution of the cytokine-driven JAK2 pathway to the "CLL cell-survival signaling network" is largely undefined.
Experimental Design: CLL patients were enrolled to investigate expression/activation of JAK2 and acylglycerol kinase (AGK), and their functional implication in primary CLL cell survival. A series of biochemical and molecular biology assays were employed to uncover the underlying mechanism.

Background: The resettlement of Afghan refugees in Oklahoma City, OK, provides a critical context for examining the mental health challenges faced by this population due to post-migration stressors.
Methods: This study utilized online surveys to recently resettled Afghan refugees in Oklahoma City, with support provided by bilingual research assistants to accommodate low literacy rates. Surveys, initially in English, were professionally translated into Dari and Pashto and validated through back-translation.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are widely used in consumer products and have been associated with adverse public health outcomes and significant economic costs. We developed a rapid chamber method for measuring EDC emissions from consumer products, significantly reducing the time to reach steady state from weeks or months to minutes or hours. Using this method, we quantified EDC emissions from a wide range of products, determined the emission-control parameters, and established their relationship with the EDC content () and physicochemical properties.

Exosomes are extracellular vesicles within the nanosized range that play roles in intercellular communication and thus have certain biological activities. The secretory signaling communication mechanism is an efficient way of exchanging information between cells and has been investigated as nature's therapeutic drug carriers. This review will summarize the potential of exosomes as therapeutic tools and drug delivery vehicles for corneal pathologies.

Background: Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma arising from the skull base is a rare entity most commonly subclassified as diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). This lesion often arises from the clivus and demonstrates a cranial nerve (CN) VI palsy. In this case report and literature review, we document the clinical presentation and management of a case of clival DLBCL, along with a review of current literature pertaining to DLBCL of the skull base.

Background: Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a signalling molecule that has an inhibitory role in atherosclerosis, inflammation, cell proliferation, and immunity. Cenerimod is a selective S1P receptor modulator under investigation for the treatment of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We aimed to determine the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of four doses of cenerimod in adults with moderate-to-severe SLE receiving standard of care background therapy.

Background: Advances in novel therapies have improved outcomes for multiple myeloma (MM) patients and the use of allo-SCT has decreased. Current guidelines no longer support allo-SCT as consolidation therapy for newly diagnosed MM, even in high-risk cases.
Summary: Allo-SCT is now typically considered only within clinical trials for young, high-risk patients with relapsed or refractory MM (RRMM).

Ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption is excessive across the United States (US). Understanding perceptions of food based on processing is critical to elucidate reasons for UPF intake and inform tool development for measuring related cognition. Design and evaluate perceptions of UPF and non-UPF food among general US adults.

We report a 7-year-old girl born with pyloric atresia but without congenital epidermolysis bullosa or skin fragility. Nail dysplasia developed at age 8 months and throughout childhood she suffered from onycholysis and mild nail hypertrophy. Whole-exome sequencing demonstrated biallelic mutations in alpha6 integrin (ITGA6): p.
