Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with immunologic and metabolic alterations linked to central processing dysfunctions, including attenuated reward processing. This study investigated the associations between inflammation, metabolic hormones (leptin, insulin, adiponectin), and reward-related brain processing in MDD patients with high (MDD-High) and low (MDD-Low) C-reactive protein (CRP) levels compared to healthy comparison subjects (HC). Participants completed a blood draw and a monetary incentive delay task during functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Recovery from Traumatic Brain Injury Is Nociceptin/Orphanin FQ Peptide Receptor Genotype-, Sex-, and Injury Severity-Dependent.

J Pharmacol Exp Ther

April 2024

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy (O.N.A., H.O.A., K.M.S.), and the Neuroscience Program (K.M.S., H.O.A.), University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, and survivors often experience mental and physical health consequences that reduce quality of life. We previously reported that blockade of the nociceptin/orphanin FQ (N/OFQ) peptide (NOP) receptor reduced tissue damage markers produced by blast TBI. The goal of this study was to determine the extent to which N/OFQ and NOP receptor levels change following mild (mTBI) and moderate TBI (modTBI) and whether the absence of the NOP receptor attenuates TBI-induced sequelae.

The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) Academic Affairs Committee was charged with revising both the 2013 Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Education (CAPE) Educational Outcomes (EOs) and the 2016 Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs). The Committee changed the document name from the CAPE outcomes to COEPA, (Curricular Outcomes and Entrustable Professional Activities) since the EOs and EPAs would now be housed together. A draft of the COEPA EOs and EPAs was released at the AACP July 2022 Annual meeting.

The goal of this Best Practice Review is to support researchers in successfully preparing and publishing qualitative research in pharmacy education. Standard practice from the literature and journals' guidance from related fields were reviewed, and recommendations and resources applicable to qualitative research in pharmacy education were compiled for researchers planning to conduct and publish qualitative research. This review provides recommendations, not requirements, for publication in the Journal and is intended to be a guide, especially for authors and reviewers relatively new to the field of qualitative research.

Objective: To assess how department chairs/administrators define, measure, and evaluate faculty workload to better understand practices within the Academy.

Methods: An 18-item survey was distributed to department chairs/administrators via American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Connect. Participants identified if they are a primary decision maker for faculty workload, whether their program has a workload policy, how workload is calculated, and how faculty satisfaction with workload equity is measured.

Introduction: There is limited guidance on the most appropriate dosing strategy for intravenous (IV) acyclovir in obese patients. The manufacturer's labelling suggests using ideal body weight (IBW); however, previous pharmacokinetic studies of obese patients have shown more rapid systemic clearance and lower area under the curve and peak concentrations compared with patients with a body mass index (BMI) < 30 kg/m. Although pharmacokinetic data suggest that plasma concentrations of acyclovir are best predicted when using adjusted body weight (AdjBW) doses, there is concern about higher rates of acute kidney injury (AKI).

The neurotrophic herpes virus cytomegalovirus is a known cause of neuropathology in utero and in immunocompromised populations. Cytomegalovirus is reactivated by stress and inflammation, possibly explaining the emerging evidence linking it to subtle brain changes in the context of more minor disturbances of immune function. Even mild forms of traumatic brain injury, including sport-related concussion, are major physiological stressors that produce neuroinflammation.

Purpose: To describe implementation of the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy (OUCOP) teaching and learning curriculum (TLC) for postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) and postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) residents, including the required components, evaluation structure, residency graduate outcomes and perceptions captured by a survey following program completion, generalizability to other institutions, and opportunities for future directions.

Summary: As part of their residency training, pharmacy residents are required to develop and refine teaching, precepting, and presentation skills. To meet the required and elective competency areas, goals, and objectives on teaching, precepting, and presentation skills, many American Society of Health-System Pharmacists-accredited residency programs have utilized TLC programs.

Azithromycin has been explored as a treatment option for eradication of and prevention of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in preterm neonates. However, there is debate about the need for eradication of and whether azithromycin is safe and efficacious for this indication. This literature review provides an overview of the evidence for use of azithromycin for eradication of and prevention of BPD, including dosing and duration of azithromycin used in these studies.

Background: Outpatient antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) is managed by a variety of teams, but primarily through an infectious disease clinic. At our medical center, OPAT monitoring is performed telephonically by pharmacists through a collaborative practice agreement under the supervision of an infectious disease physician. The effect of telephonic monitoring of OPAT by pharmacists on patient outcomes is unknown.

Characterization of early versus late opioid iatrogenic withdrawal syndrome in critically ill children transitioning from fentanyl -infusions to methadone.

J Opioid Manag

January 2023

Department of Pharmacy: Clinical and Administrative Sciences, University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. ORCID: https://orcid.org/0000-0003-3022-4403.

Objective: Methadone is used to prevent opioid iatrogenic withdrawal syndrome (IWS) in children, but the optimal dose and overlap time with an opioid infusion have not been elucidated. The purpose was to compare clinical manifestations among patients who developed opioid IWS within 24 hours (early) versus ≥24 hours (late) of fentanyl discontinuation when enteral methadone was initiated.

Design: A retrospective, descriptive study.

Ibuprofen, a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drug, modulates inflammation but may also have neuroprotective effects on brain health that are poorly understood. Astrocyte-enriched extracellular vesicles (AEEVs) facilitate cell-to-cell communication and - among other functions - regulate inflammation and metabolism via microribonucleic acids (miRNAs). Dysfunctions in reward-related processing and inflammation have been proposed to be critical pathophysiological pathways in individuals with mood disorders.

Rationale: At least six different types of antidepressant treatments have been shown to either increase the neuroprotective kynurenine pathway (KP) metabolite, kynurenic acid (KynA), or decrease the neurotoxic KP metabolite, quinolinic acid (QA). Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including ibuprofen have shown some efficacy in the treatment of depression but their effects on the KP have not been studied in humans.

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of ibuprofen on circulating KP metabolites.

Despite being widely applied in drug development, existing models are not suitable to assess chronic mitochondrial toxicity. A novel assay system mimicking in vivo microenvironment for this purpose is urgently needed. The goal of this study is to establish a 3D cell platform as a reliable, sensitive, cost-efficient, and high-throughput assay to predict drug-induced mitochondrial toxicity.
