Snyder Department of Neuroscience, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, 725 N. Wolfe Street, Baltimore, MD 21205, USA. Electronic address:

The prelimbic cortex is involved in operant reward seeking. However, the precise nature of its activity patterns and whether/how they differ between different types of rewards are largely unknown. We use miniscope calcium imaging to observe prelimbic activity during both food and cocaine seeking in freely behaving mice.

Musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders significantly contribute to global disability, especially in high-income countries. Yet, comprehensive studies on their epidemiological burden in the United States (US) are limited. Our study aims to fill this gap by characterizing the MSK disease burden in the US using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data from 1990 to 2019.

Background/objectives: Schlafen12 (SLFN12) is an intermediate human Schlafen protein shown to correlate with survivability in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). SLFN12 causes differential expressions of significant cancer genes, but how they change in response to chemotherapy remains unknown. Our aim is to identify the effect of chemotherapy on genes that improve TNBC outcomes and other SLFN family members following SLFN12 knockout or overexpression.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with liver disease present unique challenges in anticoagulation management due to increased risks of both thromboembolism and bleeding. This network meta-analysis aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), apixaban, rivaroxaban, and dabigatran, with vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) in this specific patient population. We conducted a comprehensive literature search across multiple databases, identifying seven studies (six observational and one randomized controlled trial) that met our inclusion criteria.

This study aims to identify common contaminants in well water linked to an increase in colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence rates in North Dakota (ND) counties. County-specific incidence rates for CRC were obtained from the ND Statewide Cancer Registry. Corresponding demographic, agricultural, and geophysical data were obtained from population-based sources.

Microtubule-targeting agents (MTAs) have been successfully translated from basic research into clinical therapies and have been widely used as first- and second-line chemotherapy drugs for various cancers. However, current MTAs exhibit positive responses only in subsets of patients and are often accompanied by side effects due to their impact on normal cells. This underscores an urgent need to develop novel therapeutic strategies that enhance MTA efficacy while minimizing toxicity to normal tissues.

Article Synopsis
  • Diagnostic accuracy in diagnosing Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is under-researched, particularly in comparing different diagnostic criteria.
  • A systematic review identified six studies examining agreement rates between eight different FASD diagnostic criteria, revealing a range of agreement from 53.7% to 91% for individual children and 59.4% to 89.5% overall.
  • The study highlights significant variations in diagnostic outcomes and stresses the need for large-scale research to understand these discrepancies and their impact on clinical care.

Objective: Renourishment and weight restoration are critical first steps in anorexia nervosa (AN) treatment. The ability of the gastrointestinal tract to harvest and utilize energy from food is essential for successful weight restoration, but the functional capacity of the intestine after prolonged caloric restriction remains unknown. In an exploratory study, we quantified the stool energy content of individuals with AN before and after renourishment.

Sexual desire is a complex construct with important implications for sexual functioning and well-being. In this research, we translated the Sexual Desire Inventory (SDI-2), a widely used scale for assessing sexual (desire), into 25 languages from English and used data from the International Sex Survey (ISS) to (a) investigate its psychometric properties (i.e.

A Novel Machine Learning Model to Predict Revision ACL Reconstruction Failure in the MARS Cohort.

Orthop J Sports Med

November 2024

Luminis Health Orthopedics, Pasadena, Maryland, USA.

Background: As machine learning becomes increasingly utilized in orthopaedic clinical research, the application of machine learning methodology to cohort data from the Multicenter ACL Revision Study (MARS) presents a valuable opportunity to translate data into patient-specific insights.

Purpose: To apply novel machine learning methodology to MARS cohort data to determine a predictive model of revision anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (rACLR) graft failure and features most predictive of failure.

Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.

Temozolomide (TMZ)-levetiracetam (LEV) combination therapy in glioblastoma management is gradually becoming a mainstay treatment given its superior effect compared with TMZ monotherapy. While there have been previous cases of hepatotoxicity, there are no prior reports of vanishing bile duct syndrome (VBDS) associated with TMZ-LEV combination use. This case report details a male in his 50s who had recently completed TMZ and LEV for right frontal lobe glioblastoma.

Background And Objective: Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) failures occur for various reasons including residual laxity, untreated concomitant injuries, poor graft quality, and high tibial slope. Various additional procedures can help to decrease revision ACLR failures including anterolateral complex (ALC) procedures and slope-reducing osteotomies for patients with high tibial slopes. This narrative review aims to review the literature on the roles of ALC augmentation procedures and slope-reducing osteotomies in the setting of patients undergoing revision ACLRs.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study is the first large-scale examination of rare copy number variants (CNVs) in anorexia nervosa (AN), involving data from 7,414 AN cases and 5,044 controls to explore their potential genetic links to the disorder.
  • - The researchers investigated both well-known syndromic CNVs and those associated with other diseases but found no significant links between these variants and AN; however, they identified 21 potential CNV regions that may play a role in AN risk, particularly in areas related to metabolic and neurodevelopmental factors.
  • - Ultimately, the findings suggest that rare CNVs have a limited impact on the development of AN, aligning it with other psychiatric disorders like bipolar disorder, and indicate that

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is an established treatment for patients with severe aortic stenosis (AS). It remains unclear whether disparities exist in rural or socially vulnerable populations undergoing TAVR. This study assessed whether outcomes differ based on geographic location or vulnerability of patients undergoing TAVR.

Behavioral Sciences, Sanford Research, Sioux Falls, SD, USA; Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Sanford School of Medicine, University of South Dakota, Sioux Falls, SD, USA; Department of Pediatrics, Sanford School of Medicine, University of South Dakota, Sioux Falls, SD, USA.

Depression occurs in up to 13 % of all pregnancies and is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, the literature regarding associations between depression and lower birth weight or fetal growth has been inconsistent. Here, we consider if high frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) may moderate the association between depression and birth weight.

Urothelial carcinoma (UC) is prevalent, especially in elderly males. The high rate of recurrence, treatment regime, and follow-up monitoring make UC a global health and economic burden. Arsenic is a ubiquitous toxicant that can be found in drinking water, and it is known that exposure to arsenic is associated with UC development.

Article Synopsis
  • Advances in colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment face challenges due to fast tumor spread and screening issues, especially for early-onset CRC, highlighting the need for better therapies.
  • The Rictor-mTORC2-AKT pathway is critical in promoting metastasis, and selective inhibitors targeting mTORC2, like Veratridine (VTD), show promise in reducing tumor growth and metastasis.
  • VTD acts by destabilizing Rictor, leading to decreased cancer stem cell populations and aggressive tumor behaviors in CRC, offering a new potential approach to treatment.
