Mental disorders and syndromes found among Asians residing in the United States.

The Asian population in the United States is the fastest growing minority; consequently it behooves psychiatric nurses and other mental health professionals to be aware of symptom presentation of emotional problems that may differ from those of other population groups. Specific syndromes, psychiatric disorders, and symptoms that commonly present as physical disorders are discussed. Recommended adaptations of psychiatric interventions, including medications and other therapies, are offered to enable mental health professionals to provide culturally sensitive care.

Dysphoric mood and preference for immediate versus delayed monetary reinforcement.

It has been proposed that depression is the product of deficits in self-management skills: self-monitoring, self-evaluation, and self-reinforcement. While interventions based on this theory have shown promise, some of the basic tenets upon which the theory is based lack empirical support. The present experiment tested one such tenet--the claim that depressed individuals select smaller more immediate reinforcers (an impulsive choice) at the expense of larger more delayed reinforcers (a self-control choice).

Critical review: synthesis and recommendations for research, education, and policy.

This paper briefly critiques each of four papers presented at the symposium, relates how these papers contribute additional information on the realities of rural older women, and the implications for future research, policy, and outreach. The critique points out that the realities of rural women's lives can best be understood through their lens in combination with objective observations. Further, most of the conflictual findings in this literature can be attributed to a lack of melding of findings across diverse studies.

Multidimensional correlates of falls in older women.

Older women who had fallen within the last year (n = 63) were compared with those who had not fallen (n = 67) on several psychological and motor measures. Both fallers and nonfallers demonstrated high levels of functioning. Discriminant analysis results indicated that a combination of variables, including physical activity and both psychological (general well-being, self-efficacy) and motor (functional reach, mobility) measures differentiated fallers and nonfallers.

Dehydroepiandrosterone reduces proliferation and differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes.

The purpose of these studies was to determine whether the antiobesity actions of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and DHEA-sulfate (DHEAS) observed in vivo are due to an influence on proliferation and/or differentiation in monolayer cultures of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. For the proliferation study (Exp. 1), cells were grown in plating medium containing DHEA at 0, 5, 25, 50, or 100 microM for 1-4 d.

Transient kinetics and thermodynamics of anthroylouabain binding to Na/K-ATPase.

The Na/K-ATPase is an integral membrane protein enzyme which uses energy derived from hydrolysis of ATP to pump Na+ out of and K+ into the cell. Ouabain belongs to a class of drugs known as cardiac glycosides, which are useful for treating congestive heart failure. Therapeutic value is achieved when these drugs bind to and inhibit the Na/K-ATPase of cardiac muscle.

Influence of positive life events on blood pressure in adolescents.

It has been reported that adults suffering from refractory essential hypertension experience significantly fewer positive life events than healthy peers. However, the influence of positive life events on blood pressure (BP) in adolescents has been largely ignored. Therefore, we examined the relationship between self-reported positive life events and BP in 69 sixth graders with a mean age of 11.

What makes people study more? An evaluation of factors that affect self-paced study.

Allocation of study time across items was investigated in three experiments. According to the norm-affects-allocation hypothesis, when studying an item, a person changes the sought-after degree of learning for the item (called the norm of study) in an attempt to achieve task goals. As the norm of study is increased, more time will be allocated for study.

Differential response of the human cyclin B1 promoter to inhibitors of the cell cycle in NIH3T3 cells.

In this study, NIH3T3 cells stably transfected with a cyclin B1-luciferase reporter vector were utilized to investigate if cyclin B1 promoter activity is linked to either DNA replication or the activities of various cyclin-cyclin dependent kinases (cdks). Synchronized cells treated at the time of serum re-stimulation with 2 micrograms/ml of the DNA synthesis inhibitor, aphidicolin, did not display an increase in luciferase activity in comparison to control cells. When treated with aphidicolin during S phase, luciferase activity decreased.
