Quantitative Characterization of the Smoothness of Extended-release Methylphenidate Pharmacokinetic Profiles.

Innov Clin Neurosci

January 2022

Dr. Incledon is with Ironshore Pharmaceuticals & Development, Inc. in Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the smoothness of pharmacokinetic (PK) curves for various extended-release methylphenidate (ER-MPH) formulations used for treating ADHD.
  • A mathematical approach was used to calculate a normalized smoothness parameter for different formulations, with DR/ER-MPH showing the lowest smoothness value and d-MPH ER having the highest.
  • The findings suggest that smoother PK profiles could lead to more consistent therapeutic effects and potentially minimize side effects throughout the day, though further clinical testing is needed.

Women with opioid use disorder (OUD) face unique challenges meeting their reproductive goals. Visual scanning behavior during distracted walking in healthy young adults.

Gait Posture

January 2019

Human Movement Science Curriculum, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Chapel Hill, NC, USA; Department of Allied Health Sciences, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, NC, USA.

Background: An epidemic of pedestrian accidents when walking while texting suggests that people are less aware of their surroundings during distracted walking, and highlights the importance of visual scanning for pedestrian safety. Quantitative examination of visual scanning during distracted walking is still lacking.

Research Question: Is visual scanning behavior altered by distracted walking in healthy young adults?

Methods: We compared visual scanning behavior in 20 young adults during usual (single-task) walking, walking while performing a letter-fluency task, and walking while texting.

Incarcerated patients frequently require surgery outside of the correctional setting, where they can be shackled to the operating table in the presence of armed corrections officers who observe them throughout the procedure. In this circumstance, privacy protection-central to the patient-physician relationship-and the need to control the incarcerated patient for the safety of health care workers, corrections officers, and society must be balanced. Surgeons recognize the heightened need for gaining a patient's trust within the context of an operation.

Rome III diagnostic criteria separate patients with idiopathic chronic constipation into mutually exclusive categories of constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-C) or functional constipation (FC). However, several experts think that these conditions are not different disorders, but parts of a continuum. To shed light on this issue, we examined studies that compared IBS-C with FC with respect to symptoms, pathophysiologic mechanisms, and treatment response.
