Using Three Familiar Radiographic Shapes to Improve Dental Implant Longevity.

From novice to master, clinicians of all levels can benefit from helpful tools that make implant dentistry simpler and more manageable. Such aids can provide insight into treatment options and allow practitioners to work with greater confidence in their approach. From the implant location and design to the prosthesis configuration, force factors, and more, various dynamics must be considered when attempting to optimize an implant solution, and many of these considerations can be confusing regardless of the clinician's training and experience.

A Simple Technique to Create Accurate, Esthetic Immediate Implant Provisional Restorations: Hurricane Anti-rotation Wing.

Inserting a presurgically fabricated provisional restoration at the time of implant placement can be problematic if and when the provisional does not fit. The 3-dimensional position of the implant in the mouth typically is not as critical as the long-axis rotational orientation of the implant, which is known as "timing." During implant placement, it is often desirable to have one of the implant's internal hexagon flats in a specific rotational position (ie, timing) that enables the use of orientation-specific hexed abutments.

The Cranial Morphology of the Black-Footed Ferret: A Comparison of Wild and Captive Specimens.

The black-footed ferret (), a North American mustelid species, was once found abundantly throughout the Midwest until the extreme decline in prairie dogs ( spp.), the black-footed ferret's primary food source, brought the species to near-extinction. Subsequently, the Black-Footed Ferret Recovery Program was created in the 1980s with a goal of bringing all remaining individuals of the species into captivity in order to breed the species back to a sustainable population level for successful reintroduction into the wild.

When Guided Surgery Fails: A Routine to Recover the Implant Original Treatment Plan.

Guided dental implant surgeries, their associated stackable surgical guides, and respective prosthetic techniques facilitate control and precision during implant placement and simultaneously streamline immediate provisionalization. Although implant treatments have demonstrated documented success, their failures both immediately and over time have traditionally required an additional surgery, a completely new prosthetic work-up, and subsequent fabrication of associated surgical placement components. This article describes a routine to recover the original implant placement treatment plan, without the added time, expense, or inconvenience involved in redeveloping the implant placement surgical guide.

Incidence and clinical risk factors associated with the development of labial protuberances after orthodontic treatment.

Introduction: Distinct, irregular, and hard, nodular labial protuberances (LPs) that were due to differential alveolar bone modeling can be noted on the labial gingival surface of the incisors after orthodontic treatment. Clinically, LPs cause patient discomfort and esthetic issues, but information on this phenomenon is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of LPs and demonstrate the etiology and clinical risk factors associated with this phenomenon.

Reflections on Part-Time Residency Training, 15-25 Years Later: A Qualitative Study on Wellness and Career Impact.

Phenomenon: While part-time clinical work options are popular for physicians, part-time residency training is uncommon. Some residency training programs have offered trainees the option to complete their training on a modified schedule in the past. These part-time tracks often involved extending training in order to complete equivalent hours on a part-time basis.

Adapting Elements of Cleft Care Protocols in Low- and Middle-income Countries During and After COVID-19: A Process-driven Review With Recommendations.

A consortium of global cleft professionals, predominantly from low- and middle-income countries, identified adaptations to cleft care protocols during and after COVID-19 as a priority learning area of need. A multidisciplinary international working group met on a videoconferencing platform in a multi-staged process to make consensus recommendations for adaptations to cleft protocols within resource-constrained settings. Feedback was sought from a roundtable discussion forum and global organizations involved in comprehensive cleft care.

Evaluation of microleakage in Class II composite restorations: Bonded-base and bulk-fill techniques.

Background: This study compared microleakage of Class II cavities restored using bonded-base and bulk-fill techniques with different bases.

Materials And Methods: In this study, in 60 extracted human molars, standardized (4 mm × 2 mm × 8 mm) Class II cavities were prepared, such that the gingival floor was located 1 mm below the CEJ. The teeth were randomly divided into five groups and filled with: (1) Fuji II LC + x-tra fil, (2) Ionoseal + x-tra fil, (3) x-tra base + x-tra fil, (4) Grandio Flow + x-tra fil, and (5) x-tra fil only [control group]; in open-sandwich technique, the base thickness was 1 mm.

Morphologic changes of the incisive canal and its proximity to maxillary incisor roots after anterior tooth movement.

Introduction: The objectives were to evaluate the morphologic changes of the incisive canal (IC) and the influence of IC proximity to apical root resorption of maxillary central incisors after anterior tooth movement.

Methods: Pretreatment and posttreatment cone-beam computed tomography images of adults (aged 18-47 years) were retrospectively evaluated. Subjects were divided into control group with minimal incisor movement (n = 32; maxillary incisor tip movement <2 mm) and maximum retraction group (n = 35; maxillary incisor tip movement >4 mm).

Radiographic Evaluation of Prosthodontic Patients.

This article focuses on radiographic imaging with regard to planning, treating, and maintaining partially and completely edentulous prosthodontic patients with dental implants. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is the preferred imaging method for pretreatment dental implant treatment planning. Radiographic guides containing radiopaque materials and/or fiducial markers transfer both the proposed prosthesis design and desired implant location for appropriate radiographic evaluation.

Dental microfracture detection using wavelet features and machine learning.

Microfractures (cracks) are the third most common cause of tooth loss in industrialized countries. If they are not detected early, they continue to progress until the tooth is lost. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been used to detect microfractures, but has had very limited success.

Dental Decision Simulation (DDSim): Development of a virtual training environment.

Purpose: Case-based simulations are powerful training tools that can enhance learning and drive behavior change. This is an overview of the design/development of Dental Decision Simulation (DDSim), a web-based simulation of an electronic dental record (EDR). The purpose was to use DDSim to train dentists to make evidence-based treatment planning decisions consistent with current evidence.

Disruption of the nectin-afadin complex recapitulates features of the human cleft lip/palate syndrome CLPED1.

Cleft palate (CP), one of the most common congenital conditions, arises from failures in secondary palatogenesis during embryonic development. Several human genetic syndromes featuring CP and ectodermal dysplasia have been linked to mutations in genes regulating cell-cell adhesion, yet mouse models have largely failed to recapitulate these findings. Here, we use lentiviral-mediated genetic approaches in mice to provide the first direct evidence that the nectin-afadin axis is essential for proper palate shelf elevation and fusion.

Nonsurgical treatment of an adult with a skeletal Class III malocclusion combined with a functional anterior shift, severely overclosed vertical dimension, and a reverse smile.

This case report illustrates the successful nonsurgical treatment of an adult with a skeletal Class III malocclusion exacerbated by a functional anterior shift that resulted in a severe overclosure of the mandible and a reverse smile line. To maximize the soft tissue and smile esthetics while idealizing the occlusion, active clockwise rotation of the mandible was induced along with mandibular molar uprighting and sequential leveling. In the maxilla, full arch distalization was achieved after second molar extraction.

Oral Health Status of Hospitalized Patients With Type 2 Diabetes.

Background: Diabetes is associated with poor oral health, as well as reduced access to dental care. A large percentage of patients hospitalized in the United States carry a diagnosis of diabetes; however, the oral health status of patients with diabetes who are hospitalized is unknown.

Methods: All patients meeting inclusion criteria on the general medicine service of a tertiary care hospital were invited to participate.

Endogenous Pain Modulation (EPM) impairment is a significant contributor to chronic pain. Conditioned pain modulation (CPM) testing assesses EPM function. Osteoarthritic (OA) dogs are good translational models, but CPM has not been explored.

During organogenesis, precise control of spindle orientation balances proliferation and differentiation. In the developing murine epidermis, planar and perpendicular divisions yield symmetric and asymmetric fate outcomes, respectively. Classically, division axis specification involves centrosome migration and spindle rotation, events occurring early in mitosis.

Fracture rate of 188695 lithium disilicate and zirconia ceramic restorations after up to 7.5 years of clinical service: A dental laboratory survey.

Statement Of Problem: The use of ceramic materials has increased significantly because of high esthetic demands, low costs, and ease of fabrication. Long-term, clinically based evidence is scarce, and laboratory studies have limited relevance in determining clinical durability.

Purpose: The purpose of this dental laboratory survey was to evaluate the fracture rate of layered and monolithic lithium disilicate and zirconia single crowns and fixed partial dentures after up to 7.
