Determinants of Physical Activity Adoption and Maintenance in Older Adults: A Dual Process Approach.

Psychol Sport Exerc

December 2024

School of Health and Human Sciences, University of North Carolina-Greensboro, 1400 Spring Garden Street, Greensboro, North Carolina 27412, USA. Electronic address:

Background: Dual process models represent a useful framework in explaining PA in that behavior is explained by reflective (i.e., conscious, effortful) and automatic (i.

Homologous recombination is a key evolutionary force that varies considerably across bacterial species. However, how the landscape of homologous recombination varies across genes and within individual genomes has only been studied in a few species. Here, we used Approximate Bayesian Computation to estimate the recombination rate along the genomes of 145 bacterial species.

Microbial communities that maintain symbiotic relationships with animals evolve by adapting to the specific environmental niche provided by their host, yet understanding their patterns of speciation remains challenging. Whether bacterial speciation occurs primarily through allopatric or sympatric processes remains an open question. In addition, patterns of DNA transfers, which are pervasive in bacteria, are more constrained in a closed host-gut system.

Bacterial nanocellulose production: Improvement in productivity and properties via a sustainable medium.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

Department of Nanoscience, Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, University of North Carolina Greensboro, Greensboro, NC 27455, United States. Electronic address:

High production cost is a significant barrier to commercial bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) production. This study addresses this issue using a low-cost molasses and cheese whey medium via Gluconacetobacter hansenii. The one-factor-at-a-time method investigated the effect of critical factors on BNC production, including total sugar and total protein concentrations (g/L), initial pH, and additives such as ethanol and acetic acid (%(v/v)).

Black boys and young men are disproportionately burdened with navigating contexts of community violence resulting from race-based structural inequities and concentrated disadvantage. Despite this chronic adversity, many Black boys and young men thrive; however, resilience research has traditionally focused on identifying individual- and family-level factors that support resilience. Research has yet to fully examine community-level resources that facilitate processes of resilience for Black boys and young men in the contexts of trauma, violence, and poverty.

There is a dearth of HIV prevention behavioral interventions for transgender Latinas, despite this population's HIV risk. ChiCAS (Chicas Creando Acceso a la Salud) is an intervention to increase PrEP, condom, and gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) use among transgender Latinas. To inform future work, semistructured interviews were conducted postintervention with 28 ChiCAS participants.

Background: Research investigating the psychological determinants of physical activity (PA) tends to conceptualize determinants as stable, trait-like factors. Growing evidence suggests that people and the processes that regulate people's behavior fluctuate over short timescales (eg, hours and days). This study explores the extent to which subject-level variability (vs stability) in determinants of PA, as well as the interaction between subject-level mean and variability in those determinants, is associated with moderate- to vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA) in older adults.

Effect of community - facility linked interventions on maternal health service utilization and newborn care in rural low-resource settings in Eastern Uganda.

BMC Pregnancy Childbirth

October 2024

Department of Health Policy, Planning and Management, School of Public Health, College of Health Science, Makerere University, P.O Box 7072, Kampala, Uganda.

Article Synopsis
  • The COMONETH project was initiated in rural eastern Uganda from 2017 to 2020 to enhance maternal and newborn care (MNC) and address barriers faced by mothers in accessing health services.
  • The intervention involved training Community Health Workers and providing educational resources, which aimed to improve the uptake of antenatal care (ANC) and postnatal care (PNC) among expectant mothers.
  • Results showed significant increases in the number of ANC visits and PNC service utilization, though no major effects were found on early ANC attendance or facility delivery rates.

Tertiary lymphoid tissues (TLTs) are adaptive immune structures that develop during chronic inflammation and may worsen or lessen disease outcomes in a context-specific manner. Immune cell activity governing TLT formation in the intestines is dependent on immune cell aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) activation. Homeostatic immune cell activity in the intestines is further dependent on ligand activation of AhR in intestinal epithelial cells (IECs), yet whether AhR activation and signaling in IECs influences the formation of TLTs in the presence of dietary AhR ligands is not known.

SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) caused disruptions and challenges across the globe, and many public health interventions focused on addressing immediate and emergent needs directly related to COVID-19. At the same time, other community health needs persisted, and intervention collaborators faced new challenges with reaching their communities. One such intervention was the InSideOut Initiative, a systems approach aimed at creating more supportive cultures for school-aged athletes by assisting school leaders, athletics administrators, and coaches with developing social and emotional competencies.

Purpose Of Review: Despite growing public concern about the negative impact of digital media for mental health problems, there are key ways in which digital media can be leveraged to prevent such outcomes. This article reviews research exploring the ways that digital media, particularly social media, can be used to prevent negative mental health outcomes and promote youth mental health and well-being.

Recent Findings: Research indicates that media can be protective against mental health problems and promote mental health by enabling social support and destigmatizing mental illness, especially for youth with limited resources.

The use of reclaimed water from wastewater treatment plants for irrigation has a risk of introducing micropollutants such as microplastics (MPs) and antimicrobials (AMs) into the agroecosystem. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of single and combined treatment of 0.1 % polyamide (PA ∼15 μm), and varying sulfamethoxazole (SMX) levels 0, 10, 50, and 150 mg/L on rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.

Medical gendered racism in the USA has been and continues to be a significant issue for Black women across various healthcare domains, including sexual and pelvic healthcare. The experiences of Black women with Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder, characterised by pain with sexual intercourse, are particularly understudied in relation to medical gendered racism. This paper advances existing research on Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder by employing Black feminist thought and intersectionality as theoretical frameworks.

Exercise and Acute Cognitive Enhancement.

Curr Top Behav Neurosci

November 2024

Department of Kinesiology, University of North Carolina Greensboro, Greensboro, NC, USA.

Substantial research has explored the effects of a single session of exercise on cognitive performance. Meta-analytic reviews provide summary statistics relative to these effects when the cognitive task is performed while exercising and when performed after exercise. When performed concomitantly the effects of exercise are typically small or negative with the exception of moderate effects for speed of cognitive performance during moderate intensity exercise.
