The paper analyzes the relationships among acid-base interactions in various oxide systems and their thermodynamics. Extensive data on enthalpies of solution of binary oxides in oxide melts of several compositions, obtained by high-temperature oxide melt solution calorimetry at 700 and 800 °C, are systematized and analyzed. Oxides with low electronegativity, namely the alkali and alkaline earth oxides, which are strong oxide ion donors, show enthalpies of solution that have negative values greater than -100 kJ per mole of oxide ion.

Article Synopsis
  • Transcription factors Satb1 and Satb2 are essential for the development and maturation of neurons, influencing key receptor genes involved in neurotransmission.
  • Alterations in Satb1 or Satb2 expression can disrupt neurotransmission and potentially contribute to neurodegenerative processes.
  • This study reveals that deletion of either transcription factor leads to heightened NMDA receptor responses and altered calcium signaling, as well as changes in AMPA and KA receptor sensitivities, impacting neuronal maturation and GABAergic function.

Intercellular communication and its coordination allow cells to exhibit multistability as a form of adaptation. This conveys information processing from intracellular signaling networks enabling self-organization between other cells, typically involving mechanisms associated with cognitive systems. How information is integrated in a functional manner and its relationship with the different cell fates is still unclear.

The Sip1 mutation plays the main role in pathogenesis of the Mowat-Wilson syndrome, which is characterized by the pronounced epileptic symptoms. Cortical neurons of homozygous mice with Sip1 mutation are resistant to AMPA receptor activators. Disturbances of the excitatory signaling components are also observed on such a phenomenon of neuroplasticity as hypoxic preconditioning.

The design of synthetic gene networks (SGNs) has advanced to the extent that novel genetic circuits are now being tested for their ability to recapitulate archetypal learning behaviours first defined in the fields of machine and animal learning. Here, we discuss the biological implementation of a perceptron algorithm for linear classification of input data. An expansion of this biological design that encompasses cellular 'teachers' and 'students' is also examined.

We propose and study models of two distributed synthetic gene circuits, toggle-switch and oscillator, each split between two cell strains and coupled via quorum-sensing signals. The distributed toggle switch relies on mutual repression of the two strains, and oscillator is comprised of two strains, one of which acts as an activator for another that in turn acts as a repressor. Distributed toggle switch can exhibit mobile fronts, switching the system from the weaker to the stronger spatially homogeneous state.

Towards developing a general framework for modelling vertical migration in zooplankton.

J Theor Biol

September 2016

Lobachevsky State University of Nizhniy Novgorod, Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia; Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Moscow, Russia. Electronic address:

Diel vertical migration (DVM) of zooplankton is a widespread phenomenon in both oceans and lakes, and is generally considered to be the largest synchronized movement of biomass on Earth. Most existing mathematical models of DVM are based on the assumption that animals maximize a certain criterion such as the expected reproductive value, the venturous revenue, the ratio of energy gain/mortality or some predator avoidance function when choosing their instantaneous depth. The major shortcoming of this general point of view is that the predicted DVM may be strongly affected by a subjective choice of a particular optimization criterion.

Effect of noise in intelligent cellular decision making.

PLoS One

Department of Mathematics, University College London, London, UK; Institute for Women's Health, University College London, London, UK; Lobachevsky State University of Nizhniy Novgorod, Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia.

Similar to intelligent multicellular neural networks controlling human brains, even single cells, surprisingly, are able to make intelligent decisions to classify several external stimuli or to associate them. This happens because of the fact that gene regulatory networks can perform as perceptrons, simple intelligent schemes known from studies on Artificial Intelligence. We study the role of genetic noise in intelligent decision making at the genetic level and show that noise can play a constructive role helping cells to make a proper decision.

For practical construction of complex synthetic genetic networks able to perform elaborate functions it is important to have a pool of relatively simple modules with different functionality which can be compounded together. To complement engineering of very different existing synthetic genetic devices such as switches, oscillators or logical gates, we propose and develop here a design of synthetic multi-input classifier based on a recently introduced distributed classifier concept. A heterogeneous population of cells acts as a single classifier, whose output is obtained by summarizing the outputs of individual cells.

Intracellular genetic networks are more intelligent than was first assumed due to their ability to learn. One of the manifestations of this intelligence is the ability to learn associations of two stimuli within gene-regulating circuitry: Hebbian-type learning within the cellular life. However, gene expression is an intrinsically noisy process; hence, we investigate the effect of intrinsic and extrinsic noise on this kind of intracellular intelligence.

Anderson localization or nonlinear waves: a matter of probability.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2011

Theory of Oscillations Department, University of Nizhniy Novgorod, Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia.

In linear disordered systems Anderson localization makes any wave packet stay localized for all times. Its fate in nonlinear disordered systems (localization versus propagation) is under intense theoretical debate and experimental study. We resolve this dispute showing that, unlike in the common hypotheses, the answer is probabilistic rather than exclusive.
