For a long periodic chain of Bose condensates prepared in the free space, the subsequent evolution and interference dramatically depend on the difference between the phases of the adjacent and more distant condensates. If the phases are equal, the initial periodic density distribution reappears at later times, which is known as the Talbot effect. For randomly related phases, we have found that a spatial order also appears in the interference, while the evolution of the fringes differs with the Talbot effect qualitatively.

Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod, Department of Biophysics, Gagarin St. 23, Nizhny Novgorod, 603950, Russia. Electronic address:

The study of effects of ionizing radiation (IR) on plants is important in relation to several problems: (I) the existence of zones where background radiation - either natural or technogenic - is increased; (II) the problems of space biology; (III) the use of IR in agricultural selection; (IV) general biological problems related to the fundamental patterns and specifics of the effects of IR on various living organisms. By now, researchers have accumulated and systematized a large body of data on the effects of IR on the growth and reproduction of plants, as well as on the changes induced by IR at the genetic level. At the same time, there is a large gap in understanding the mechanisms of IR influence on the biochemical and physiological processes - despite the fact that these processes form the basis determining the manifestation of IR effects at the level of the whole organism.

Discovering the mechanisms underlying homeostatic regulation in brain neural network formation and stability processes is one of the most urgent tasks in modern neuroscience. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the tropomyosin-related kinase B (TrkB) receptor system have long been considered the main regulators of neuronal survival and differentiation. The elucidation of methods for studying neural network activity makes investigating the complex mechanisms underlying neural network structure reorganization during development and detecting new mechanisms for neuronal activity remodeling possible.

Front Synaptic Neurosci

December 2018

Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Bio-informatics, Faculty of Science and Engineering; Neuroscience Axis, CHU de Québec Research Center (CHUL), Laval University, Québec, QC, Canada.

In fast-spiking (FS), parvalbumin-expressing interneurons of the CA1 hippocampus, activation of the GluA2-lacking Ca-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs) in basal dendrites is coupled to Ca-induced Ca-release (CICR), and can result in a supralinear summation of postsynaptic Ca-transients (post-CaTs). While this mechanism is important in controlling the direction of long-term plasticity, it is still unknown whether it can operate at all excitatory synapses converging onto FS cells or at a set of synapses receiving a particular input. Using a combination of patch-clamp recordings and two-photon Ca imaging in acute mouse hippocampal slices with computational simulations, here we compared the generation of supralinear post-CaTs between apical and basal dendrites of FS cells.

Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod, Nizhni Novgorod, Russia; Prokhorov General Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia; Moscow Regional Research and Clinical Institute (MONIKI), Moscow, Russia. Electronic address:

A radioprotective effect of exogenous recombinant peroxiredoxin 2 (Prx2) was revealed and characterized using an animal model of whole body X-ray irradiation at sublethal and lethal doses. Prx2 belongs to an evolutionarily ancient family of peroxidases that are involved in enzymatic degradation of a wide variety of organic and inorganic hydroperoxides. Apart from that, the oxidized form of Prx2 also exhibits chaperone activity, thereby preventing protein misfolding and aggregation under oxidative stress.

Institute of Biology and Biomedicine, National Research Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod, Russian Federation; Cell Death Investigation and Therapy Laboratory, Department of Human Structure and Repair, Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium; Cancer Research Institute Ghent, Ghent, Belgium. Electronic address:

In the last decade, it has become clear that anti-cancer therapy is more successful when it can also induce an immunogenic form of cancer cell death (ICD). ICD is an umbrella term covering several cell death modalities, including apoptosis and necroptosis. In general, ICD is characterized by the emission of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) and/or cytokines/chemokines, leading to the induction of strong anti-tumor immune responses.

Bedaquiline (BDQ) is a new drug from the family of diarylquinolines, which has a potent bactericidal activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. This paper has examined the interaction of BDQ with model membranes (liposomes and BLM) and rat erythrocytes. It was shown that BDQ (1-10 mol%) changed the thermotropic phase behavior of DMPC liposomes, leading to the lateral phase separation in the lipid bilayer and the formation of membrane microdomains.

Gagarina 23, Nizhny Novgorod, 603950, Russia; Moscow Regional Research and Clinical Institute (MONIKI), Shchepkina St., 61/2, Moscow 129110, Russia.

It is known that visible light, including sunlight and laboratory lighting, adversely affect the development of embryos in vitro. In with article we present a technology for the synthesis of composite screens, capable to photoconvert UV and a part of the blue spectrum into red light with the maximum ~630 nm. It is established that the application of such transformed light with an evident red component raises the chances of embryos to survive and protects embryonic stem cells.

The paper examines membranotropic Ca-dependent effects of ω-hydroxypalmitic acid (HPA), a product of ω-oxidation of fatty acids, on the isolated rat liver mitochondria and artificial membrane systems (liposomes). It was established that in the presence of Ca, HPA induced aggregation of liver mitochondria, which was accompanied by the release of cytochrome c from the organelles. It was further demonstrated that the addition of Ca to HPA-containing liposomes induced their aggregation and/or fusion.

Unlabelled: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is one of the key signaling molecules that supports the viability of neural cells in various brain pathologies, and can be considered a potential therapeutic agent. However, several methodological difficulties, such as overcoming the blood⁻brain barrier and the short half-life period, challenge the potential use of BDNF in clinical practice. Gene therapy could overcome these limitations.

Uhlmann curvature in dissipative phase transitions.

Sci Rep

Department of Physics and Chemistry, Group of Interdisciplinary Theoretical Physics, University of Palermo, Viale delle Scienze, Ed. 18, I-90128, Palermo, Italy.

A novel approach based on the Uhlmann curvature is introduced for the investigation of non-equilibrium steady-state quantum phase transitions (NESS-QPTs). Equilibrium phase transitions fall invariably into two markedly non-overlapping categories: classical phase transitions and quantum phase transitions. NESS-QPTs offer a unique arena where such a distinction fades off.

The chemical binding of photocatalytic materials, such as TiO₂ and ZnO nanoparticles, onto porous polymer membranes requires a series of chemical reactions and long purification processes, which often result in small amounts of trapped nanoparticles with reduced photocatalytic activity. In this work, a chemical vapor deposition technique was investigated in order to allow the nucleation and growth of ZnO and TiO₂ nanoparticles onto polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) porous membranes for application in advanced oxidation processes. The thickness of obtained surface coatings by sputtered nanoparticles was found to depend on process conditions.

In this article, we derive a closed form expression for the symmetric logarithmic derivative of Fermionic Gaussian states. This provides a direct way of computing the quantum Fisher Information for Fermionic Gaussian states. Applications range from quantum Metrology with thermal states to non-equilibrium steady states with Fermionic many-body systems.

According to the currently prevailing theory, hippocampal formation constructs and maintains cognitive spatial maps. Most of the experimental evidence for this theory comes from the studies on navigation in laboratory rats and mice, typically male animals. While these animals exhibit a rich repertoire of behaviors associated with navigation, including locomotion, head movements, whisking, sniffing, raring and scent marking, the contribution of these behavioral patterns to the hippocampal spatially-selective activity has not been sufficiently studied.

Recently, a mechanism of formation of light bullets (LBs) in wide-aperture passively mode-locked lasers was proposed. The conditions for existence and stability of these bullets, found in the long cavity limit, were studied theoretically under the mean field (MF) approximation using a Haus-type model equation. In this paper, we relax the MF approximation and study LB formation in a model of a wide-aperture three section laser with a long diffractive section and short absorber and gain sections.

Over the past few decades, hit identification has been greatly facilitated by advances in high-throughput and fragment-based screenings. One major hurdle remaining in drug discovery is process automation of hit-to-lead (H2L) optimization. Here, we report a time- and cost-efficient integrated strategy for H2L optimization as well as a partially automated design of potent chemical probes consisting of a focused-chemical-library design and virtual screening coupled with robotic diversity-oriented de novo synthesis and automated in vitro evaluation.

Article Synopsis
  • A new technology has been developed to create nitinol materials with titanium- or tantalum-enriched surface layers, which reduce reactive oxygen species and protein radicals.
  • These enriched materials showed nearly double the cell growth in human myofibroblasts and mesenchymal stromal cells compared to untreated nitinol.
  • The formation of fibrous capsules around the implants indicates that titanium- or tantalum-coated nitinol is more biocompatible and less reactive than pure nitinol, making it promising for medical use.
