Informal caregivers experience problems of their own for which they need support, but despite the efforts of the World Health Organization to include the well-being of family members and caregivers in the concept of palliative care, their needs are rarely assessed systematically. This report explores caregivers' problems and their needs for professional support. Seventy-six caregivers of cancer patients with advanced disease completed a comprehensive needs assessment questionnaire, the Problems and Needs in Palliative Care questionnaire-caregiver form, listing 67 potential problems in their quality of life and their role of caregiver and 9 items concerning informational needs.

Aim: (-)Stepholidine (SPD) is an active ingredient of the Chinese herb Stephania intermedia, which binds to the dopamine D(1) and D(2) like receptors. Biochemical, electrophysiological and behavioural experiments have provided strong evidence that SPD is both a D(1) and a D(2) antagonist, which could make SPD a unique antipsychotic drug. The present study aimed to investigate the antipsychotic properties of SPD in two animal models for schizophrenia.

Purpose: This article describes the Dutch 'Multidisciplinary Guidelines in Mental Health Care' project and its first products (multidisciplinary guidelines on depressive and anxiety disorders).

Context Of Case: In the early 1990s, disciplines in Dutch mental health care formulated their first monodisciplinary guidelines, which disagreed on essential features. In 1998, the Dutch government invited representatives of the five core disciplines in mental health care (psychiatrists, general practitioners, psychotherapists (clinical), psychologists and psychiatric nurses) to start a joint project aimed at the development of new integrated multidisciplinary guidelines.

Background: People with subclinical depressive symptoms are at increased risk of depressive disorder, little is known on the prevention of depressive disorder in this population. This study evaluates the long-term preventive effects of an effective depression treatment, the Coping with Depression (CWD) course. This paper describes the effect of the CWD course on the incidence of depressive episodes and depressive symptoms, and explores whether the initial level of symptoms and gender has differential intervention effects.

Monitoring in language perception: The effect of misspellings of words in highly constrained sentences.

We present evidence for a monitoring process in language perception at the word level, reflected by a P600. This P600 is triggered when a conflict evolves because the brain encounters an unexpected linguistic item when another item is highly expected. To resolve this conflict between representations, the brain monitors the input to check for possible processing errors.

Background: It has frequently been suggested that adolescents are more likely to start smoking when they hold favorable social images or prototypes of smoking peers. Although empirical evidence supports the role of smoker prototypes in predicting smoking, little is known about the relative contribution of smoker prototypes, in comparison to more well-established social cognitive factors. Therefore, the present study investigated the relative impact of smoker prototypes, in comparison to factors of the theory of planned behavior, in predicting smoking among adolescents.

Knowledge of the melanocortin system in fish is still limited, but information on the receptor part of the system is very rapidly growing. The melanocortin receptors (MCRs) have been recently cloned from several species of fish.

Behavioral reference frames for planning human reaching movements.

At some stage in the process of a sensorimotor transformation for a reaching movement, information about the current position of the hand and information about the location of the target must be encoded in the same frame of reference to compute the hand-to-target difference vector. Two main hypotheses have been proposed regarding this reference frame: an eye-centered and a body-centered frame. Here we evaluated these hypotheses using the pointing errors that subjects made when planning and executing arm movements to memorized targets starting from various initial hand positions while keeping gaze fixed in various directions.

Tomoregulin-1, a type-I transmembrane protein with two follistatin modules, a unique epidermal growth factor (EGF) domain and a short, highly conserved cytoplasmic tail, was studied. A number of hematopoietic cell lines (L1210, CEM, Jurkat, U937, K562, JY, THP-1 and T2) express tomoregulin-1 endogenously. In these cells, apoptosis was induced by an antiserum (C29) and purified IgG against the follistatin modules, but not by antisera against the EGF-domain or the cytoplasmic tail.

A combination of velocity map imaging and slicing techniques have been used to measure the product recoil anisotropy and angular momentum polarization for the photodissociation process I2-->I(2P(3/2))+I(2P(3/2)) and I2-->I(2P(3/2)))+I(2P(1/2)) in the 450-510 nm laser wavelength region using linearly polarized photolysis and probe laser light. The former channel is produced predominantly via perpendicular excitation to the 1Piu state, and the latter is predominantly parallel, via the B 3Pi(0u)+ state. In both cases we observe mostly adiabatic dissociation, which produces electronically aligned iodine atoms in the mid /m/=1/2 states with respect to the recoil direction.

Crosslinking of small heat-shock proteins (sHsps) by tissue transglutaminase (tTG) is enhanced by stress and under pathological conditions. We here used hexapeptide probes to determine the amine donor (K) and acceptor (Q) sites for tTG in Hsp20. Mass spectrometric peptide mass fingerprinting and peptide fragmentation established that Q31 and the C-terminal K162 are involved in inter- and intramolecular crosslinking (transamidation).

Hydrogenosomes are membrane-bound organelles that compartmentalise the final steps of energy metabolism in a number of anaerobic eukaryotes. They produce hydrogen and ATP. Here we will review the data, which are relevant for the questions: how did the hydrogenosomes originate, and what was their ancestor? Notably, there is strong evidence that hydrogenosomes evolved several times as adaptations to anaerobic environments.

Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch syndrome is a rare disorder with a progressive course and early lethality. Severe mental and growth retardation, muscle hypotonia, a progeroid face, wrinkled skin, relative macrocephaly with late closure of the anterior fontanel, arachnodactyly and congenital heart defects are also typical. We report on a female infant with all the characteristic features of this syndrome after birth.

The blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) response, as measured with fMRI, offers good spatial resolution compared to other non-invasive neuroimaging methods. The use of a spin echo technique rather than the conventional gradient echo technique may further improve the resolution by refocusing static dephasing effects around the larger vessels, so sensitizing the signal to the microvasculature. In this work the width of the point spread function (PSF) of the BOLD response at a field strength of 3 Tesla is compared for these two approaches.

Drug dependence and addiction is a chronic mental illness that has far reaching consequences for society in terms of economic loss, health costs and judicial problems. A crucial question in drug addiction, is what factors are involved in its aetiology, and especially what mediates the shit from use to abuse. As in most other mental illnesses, addiction can best be described using the so-called three hit model, which states that a disease results from an interaction between genetic factors, early lie events and late environmental factors.

The gamma-secretase enzyme complex displays intramembrane catalytic activity toward many type I transmembrane proteins, including the Alzheimer-linked amyloid-beta-protein precursor (APP) and the neuregulin receptor ErbB4. Active gamma-secretase is a tetrameric protein complex consisting of presenilin-1 (or -2), nicastrin, PEN-2, and Aph-1a (or -1b). We have recently discovered that pharmacogenetically bred apomorphine-susceptible Wistar rats (APO-SUS) have only one or two copies of the Aph-1b gene (termed I/I and II/II rats, respectively), whereas their phenotypic counterparts (APO-UNSUS) have three copies (III/III).

Dehaene, Bossini, and Giraux (1993) showed that when participants make parity judgments, responses to numerically small numbers are made faster with the left hand, whereas responses to large numbers are made faster with the right hand (the SNARC [spatial-numerical association of response codes] effect). According to one view, the SNARC effect arises at an early processing stage due to (in)congruencies between the digit's side of presentation and its representation on the mental number line, independently of response effector(s). Alternatively, the SNARC effect might arise at a later response-related stage due to (in)congruencies between the digit's representation on the mental number line and the side of response, independently of the side of presentation.
