Fungal primary and opportunistic pathogens: an ecological perspective.

FEMS Microbiol Rev

September 2024

Key Laboratory of Environmental Pollution Monitoring and Disease Control, Ministry of Education of Guizhou & Key Laboratory of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Guizhou Medical University, 561113 Guiyang, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Fungal primary pathogenicity is described as a strategic interaction where the host helps improve the fungus's fitness, while opportunistic strains merely survive by using host tissues in ways they are not specifically designed for.
  • There are two main types of primary pathogens: environmental pathogens that adapt to specific hosts through a double life cycle, and those that spread directly between hosts, risking epidemics through shifts to susceptible populations.
  • Some environmental fungi can transition from opportunistic to primary pathogens by leveraging similar survival traits across very different hosts, often linked to their ability to withstand extreme conditions.

We previously demonstrated that intake of low-fat dairy, but not high-fat dairy, was associated with a decreased colorectal cancer (CRC) recurrence risk. These risks, however, may differ by sex, primary tumour location, and disease stage. Combining data from two similar prospective cohort studies of people with stage I-III CRC enabled these subgroup analyses.

Food webs in isolation: The food-web structure of a freshwater reservoir with armoured shores in a former coastal bay area.

Sci Total Environ

May 2024

Department of Freshwater and Marine Ecology, Institute for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Dynamics, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Many shallow coastal bays have been closed off from the sea to mitigate the risk of flooding, resulting in coastal reservoir lakes with artificial armoured shorelines. Often these enclosed ecosystems show a persistent decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services, which is likely reflected in their food-web structure. We therefore hypothesize that the food webs of coastal reservoir lakes with armoured shorelines (1) consist of relatively few species with a low food-web connectance and short food chains, and (2) are mainly fuelled by autochthonous organic matter produced in the pelagic zone.

Background: In some settings, sensitive field diagnostic tools may be needed to achieve elimination of falciparum malaria. To this end, rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) based on the detection of the Plasmodium falciparum protein HRP-2 are being developed with increasingly lower limits of detection. However, it is currently unclear how parasite stages that are unaffected by standard drug treatments may contribute to HRP-2 detectability and potentially confound RDT results even after clearance of blood stage infection.

State-to-state photodissociation dynamics of CO at 157 nm.

Phys Chem Chem Phys

October 2022

State Key Laboratory of Molecular Reaction Dynamics, Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Dalian, Liaoning, 116023, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the photodissociation of CO molecules at 157 nm, focusing on the O(D) + CO(Σ) product channel using velocity map imaging to capture detailed fragment behavior.
  • - Utilizing resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI), both O(D) and CO(Σ) products were analyzed for their energy and angular distributions, revealing how these distributions vary with the vibrational state of CO.
  • - Results indicate that changes in the angular distribution of CO fragments correlate with the rotational quantum number, supporting theoretical models of CO dissociating into a bent excited state that impacts the dissociation process.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2019, experts declared apolipoprotein B (apoB) a better indicator of cardiovascular risk compared to traditional markers like low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).
  • The review examines how apoB reflects the presence of atherogenic particles such as chylomicron remnants and various lipoproteins, emphasizing that LDL particles are crucial in determining cardiovascular risk.
  • It also explores the relationship between the number of apoB particles and cholesterol mass, explaining why measuring apoB provides more accurate risk assessment than just focusing on LDL-C or non-HDL cholesterol levels.
