Tubulin plays a central role in mitosis and has been the target of multiple anticancer drugs, including paclitaxel. Herein two separate families of 2,3-dihydroquinazoline-4(1)-ones and quinazoline-4(3) ones, comprising 57 compounds in total, were synthesised. Screening against a broad panel of human cancer cell lines (HT29 colon, U87 and SJ-G2 glioblastoma, MCF-7 breast, A2780 ovarian, H460 lung, A431 skin, Du145 prostate, BE2-C neuroblastoma, and MIA pancreas) reveals these analogues to be broad spectrum cytotoxic compounds.

From lead 1, (-(4-((4-(3-(4-(3-methoxyphenyl)-1-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)propyl)piperazin-1-yl)sulfonyl)-phenyl)acetamide), a S100A2-p53 protein-protein interaction inhibitor based on an modelling driven hypothesis, four focused libraries were designed and synthesised. Growth inhibition screening was performed against 16 human cancer cell lines including the pancreatic cell lines MiaPaCa2, BxPC3, AsPC-1, Capan-2, HPAC, PANC-1 and the drug resistant CFPAC1. Modification of 1's phenylacetamide moiety, gave with only modest pancreatic cancer activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study identifies dansylcadaverine as a moderate inhibitor of dynamin I (dynI) GTPase activity, affecting clathrin-mediated endocytosis in U2OS cells.
  • A new class of inhibitors, termed Sulfonadyns™, showed enhanced dynI inhibition with certain chemical modifications, notably the addition of a terminal cinnamyl group.
  • The most effective compound, Sulfonadyn-47, demonstrated significant anti-seizure effects in animal tests, comparable to established medications, suggesting potential for new anti-seizure drugs targeting dynamin.

Introduction: Digital microscopy systems are beginning to replace traditional light microscopes for morphologic analysis of blood films, but these are geographically restricted to individual computers and technically limited by manufacturer's constraints. We explored the use of a scanner-agnostic web-based artificial intelligence (AI) system to assess the accuracy of white blood cell (WBC) differentials and blast identification in haematological malignancies.

Methods: Digitized images of 20 normal and 124 abnormal peripheral blood films were uploaded to the web-based platform (Techcyte©) and WBC differentials performed using the online AI software.

Diisopropylammonium bromide (DIPAB) doped poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers (5, 10 and 24 wt% DIPAB doping) with improved and tunable dielectric properties were synthesised electrospinning. DIPAB nanoparticles were grown during the nanofiber formation. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) proved that electrospinning of DIPAB doped PVDF solutions led to the formation of a highly electro-active β-phase in the nanofibers.

Robenidine ()-'-(()-1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethylidene)-2-(1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethylidene)hydrazine-1-carboximidhydrazide displays methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE) MICs of 2 μg mL. Herein we describe the structure-activity relationship development of a novel series of guanidine to 2-aminopyrimidine isosteres that ameliorate the low levels of mammalian cytotoxicity in the lead compound while retaining good antibiotic activity. Removal of the 2-NH pyrimidine moiety renders these analogues inactive.

School-based physical education (PE) provides opportunities to accumulate moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), but many students are insufficiently active during PE lessons. Providing teachers with feedback regarding their students' physical activity may increase the effectiveness of PE for achieving MVPA goals, but existing physical activity monitoring technologies have limitations in class environments. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop and validate a system capable of providing feedback on PE lesson MVPA.

The Ugi four component reaction of an aldehyde, amine, isocyanide and an ethanoic acid was effected smoothly in protic ionic liquids ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and propylammonium nitrate (PAN) to afford analogues of α-phenylacetamido amides in good to excellent isolated yields. The corresponding reactions in [BMIM][PF] and the protic ionic liquid ethanolammonium nitrate (ETAN) failed. Microwave irradiation in EAN facilitated rapid access to three focused libraries, based on the parent isocyanide: cyclohexyl isocyanide, benzyl isocyanide and ethyl isocyanoacetate.

Improving the cardiometabolic health of people with psychosis: A protocol for a randomised controlled trial of the Physical Health Nurse Consultant service.

Contemp Clin Trials

October 2018

Research Cluster Leader - Muscular and Skeletal Health, School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences, Central Queensland University, Australia. Electronic address:

Background: Over 690,000 Australians experience psychosis annually, significantly impacting cardiometabolic illness and healthcare costs. Current models of care are fragmented and a critical implementation gap exists regarding the delivery of coordinated physical healthcare for Australians with psychosis.

Objectives: To describe a trial implementing a Physical Health Nurse Consultant (PHNC) role to coordinate physical health care in a community mental health setting.

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a form of diagnostic ultrasonography, which has a defined role as a clinical adjunct in patient assessment and management. If it is to continue to develop as a core clinical skill, junior medical practitioners and trainees may benefit from dedicated ultrasound education and familiarisation early in their training. Controversy endures, however, as inappropriate use of this highly technical and operator-dependent imaging modality has negative clinical implications.

Discipline of General Practice, School of Medicine, The University of Queensland, L8 Health Sciences Building, Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Brisbane, Australia.

Background: Answering clinical questions arising from patient care can improve that care and offers an opportunity for adult learning. It is also a vital component in practising evidence-based medicine. GPs' sources of in-consultation information can be human or non-human (either hard copy or electronic).

An Australian history of the subordination of midwifery.

Women Birth

March 2007

The School of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Health, The University of Newcastle University Drive, Callaghan, Australia.

This paper analyses the history of the subordination of midwifery to medicine and nursing. With the important exception of Evan Willis' work on medical dominance and Annette Summers' work on the takeover of midwifery by nursing, other histories of Australian midwifery have taken a neutral approach to issue of power and control. The aim of analysing this period is to identify the strategies of power that were used to subordinate midwifery.
