In July 2022 southeast England experienced a record breaking heatwave and unprecedented wildfires in urban areas. We investigate fire weather trends since 1960 in southeast England using a large ensemble of initialised climate models. Record smashing temperatures coincided with widespread fires in London, and we find that while wildfire risk was high, it was not record breaking.

Background: Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are focal dilatations of the abdominal aorta that expand progressively, increasing their risk of rupture. Rupture of an AAA is associated with high mortality rates, but the mechanisms underlying the initiation, expansion, and rupture of AAAs are not yet fully understood. We aimed to characterize the pathophysiology of AAAs and identify new genes associated with AAA initiation and progression.

Purpose: Few studies have assessed trochanteric vascularity despite its implications for bone healing and surgical approaches. This study aimed to assess the regional arterial contributions of the medial femoral circumflex artery (MFCA) versus the lateral femoral circumflex artery (LFCA) to trochanteric vascularity.
Methods: Ten adult human cadaveric pelvises to mid-femur specimens were obtained.

Background: Chronic diseases are a considerable burden to health systems, communities, and patients. Much of this burden, however, could be prevented if interventions effective in reducing chronic disease risks were routinely implemented.
Aims: The aim of this paper is to discuss the role of public health agencies in preventing chronic disease through the application of learning health system (LHS) approaches to improve the implementation of evidence-based interventions.

Background And Aims: East African countries have high rates of maternal and child mortality and morbidity. Studies have shown that the involvement of male partners in reproductive health can benefit maternal and child health (MCH). This scoping review aims to provide an overview of the evidence across East Africa that describes male partner involvement and its effect on maternal, reproductive, and child well-being.

The fixation index, , has been a staple measure to detect selection, or departures from random mating in populations. However, current Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) cannot easily estimate , in multi-locus gene families that contain multiple loci having similar or identical arrays of variant sequences of ≥1 kilobase (kb), which differ at multiple positions. In these families, high-quality short-read NGS data typically identify variants, but not the genomic location, which is required to calculate (based on locus-specific observed and expected heterozygosity).

Hypomethylating agents are the most widely used upfront therapy for patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) who are not suitable for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In Australia, azacitidine was, until recently, the only approved and subsidized treatment for patients with intermediate-2 and high-risk MDS, chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, and low blast acute myeloid leukemia. We analyzed prescription data to evaluate the real-world persistence and overall survival (OS) of patients prescribed azacitidine for the first time in Australia.

This review looks at what has been learned about MMN in schizophrenia over the last three decades and why the level of interest and activity in this field of research remains strong. A diligent consideration of available evidence suggests that MMN can serve as a biomarker in schizophrenia, but perhaps not the kind of biomarker that early research supposed.

Objectives: To review radiation exposure during emergency ureteric stent insertion to identify differences based on operator experience, specialty operator and stone characteristics.
Patients And Methods: A retrospective audit over 10 years was performed for patients who underwent emergency stent insertion for urolithiasis with intraoperative fluoroscopy. Outcomes measured included operator experience, radiation exposure (mGy), dose area product (Gy/cm), fluoroscopy time, stone characteristics and patient BMI.
Background And Aim: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) with intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) is a commonly performed surgical procedure in most hospitals. Anecdotal evidence suggests that when the pancreatic duct (PD) inadvertently fills during IOC, there may be an increased risk of postoperative pancreatitis (POP). However, there is a paucity of information in the literature about both the incidence of pancreatitis post LC and the incidence of PD filling on IOC and any potential relationship between the two.

Methods: We used a two-stage approach to harmonize cognitive data across cohorts and derive a cross-cohort score of cognitive impairment due to AD. First, we pool and harmonize cognitive data from international cohorts of varying size and ethnic diversity.
The specific prevalence and outcome of pulmonary hypertension after mitral valve replacement (MVR) is not well documented. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence and prognostic impact of pulmonary hypertension after MVR. In addition, we sought to determine the threshold of mortality risk according to echocardiography derived pulmonary pressures and those echocardiographic characteristics that are associated with increased mortality.

However, sampling biases relevant to any given research question are often poorly explored and infrequently reported; this can undermine statistical inference. In other disciplines, it is common for researchers to complete 'risk-of-bias' assessments to expose and document the potential for biases to undermine conclusions.

Background: Treatment of preoperative anemia with intravenous iron is common within elective surgical care pathways. It is plausible that this treatment may improve care for people with hip fractures many of whom are anemic because of pre-existing conditions, fractures, and surgery.
Objective: To review the evidence for intravenous iron administration on outcomes after hip fracture.
Naevus Lipomatosus Cutaneous Superficialis(NLCS) is very rare in neonates and presents as part of broad spectrum of skin lesions. Clinical appearance alone can be deceptive. Prompt radiologic evaluation and surgical excision with visible clear margins should be first line of management followed by pathological confirmation to rule out any other sinister pathology.

While reduced global brain metabolism is known in aging, Alzheimer's disease (AD), small vessel disease (SVD) and delirium, explanation of regional brain metabolic (rBM) changes is a challenge. We hypothesized that this may be explained by "triage phenomenon", to preserve metabolic supply to vital brain areas. We studied changes in rBM in 69 patients with at least 5% decline in global brain metabolism during active lymphoma.

When not a primary presenting and dominant symptom, language difficulties may be overlooked in favor of more prominent cognitive, behavior, or motor deficits. The aim of this scoping review is to examine the extent and nature of the research evidence describing (1) the spoken language impairments found in non-language led dementias, (2) their impact on everyday living, and (3) the reported language interventions.

We herein report experimental applications of a novel, automated computational approach to chemical reaction network (CRN) identification. This report shows the first chemical applications of an autonomous tool to identify the kinetic model and parameters of a process, when considering both catalytic species and various integer and non-integer orders in the model's rate laws. This kinetic analysis methodology requires only the input of the species within the chemical system (starting materials, intermediates, products, ) and corresponding time-series concentration data to determine the kinetic information of the chemistry of interest.

Objective: Offspring born to mothers with asthma in pregnancy are known to have lower lung function which tracks with age. Human group 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) accumulate in foetal lungs, at 10-fold higher levels compared to adult lungs. However, there are no data on foetal ILC2 numbers and the association with respiratory health outcomes such as lung function in early life.

One constraint has been that influencing indicators have been selected mainly based on subjective judgment and tested using traditional statistical modeling methods. We proposed a framework new to diabetes studies using data-driven and spatial methods to identify the most significant influential determinants of diabetes automatically and estimated their relationships.
