Differential expression of G proteins (Gi alpha 2 and G(o alpha) and the separate central projections of Gi alpha 2- and G(o alpha)-immunoreactive (ir) vomeronasal receptor neurons were investigated in the mouse and rat using immunocytochemical methods. In the vomeronasal organ (VNO), receptor neurons with their cell bodies located in the middle layer (middle 1/3) of the vomeronasal sensory epithelium express Gi alpha 2. Axons of these Gi alpha 2-ir neurons can be followed from VNO to the anterior part, but not the posterior part, of the nerve-glomerular (N-GL) layer of the accessory olfactory bulb (AOB).

Prominent displays of endogenous biotin reactivity can be observed at specific locations in histochemical preparations of the forebrain and midbrain in the northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens) and common American toad (Bufo americanus). At the light microscopic level, the biotin reactivity appears in clusters of darkly stained puncta of either spherical or rodlike shape in the olfactory cortex, nucleus isthmi, and hypothalamus. With the electron microscope, the biotin reactive spheres are identified as neuronal varicosities and synaptic boutons and the rods as short segments of axons.

Wilms' tumor (nephroblastoma), a primary renal neoplasm containing primitive blastema and embryonic glomerulotubular structures, is the most common malignant tumor of the urinary tract in children. There have been about 240 cases of adult Wilms' tumor reported in the world literature, however due to some differences in histologic findings, many cases have been reclassified as rhabdoid or clear cell sarcomas, both of which are recognized as separate entities. We report a case of an adult Wilms' tumor and discuss the clinical, radiographic and histologic features of this tumor.

More than a dozen years ago, case rates of tuberculosis (TB) began to increase in the United States, as well as in other industrialized and Third World countries. Our US urban centers were the epicenter of the "new" TB epidemic, with New York City accounting for more than 15% of all TB cases in the United States. Numerous factors were responsible for this dramatic, unexpected explosion in mankind's most prevalent and lethal disease, including (1) an increasing pool of susceptible individuals who, by virtue of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, were much more likely to rapidly progress to active (contagious) TB after becoming infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis; (2) a reduction in the resources and sites available for the identification, treatment, and surveillance of patients with tuberculous infection and disease; and (3) the importation of TB cases via immigration.

To determine whether are development changes in the baroreceptor and central respiratory modulation of sympathetic activity, we used ordinary and partial coherence spectral analyses on cervical and splanchnic sympathetic activity in swine 1-36 days old. Removal of baroreceptor influences from cervical sympathetic and splanchnic spectra using partialization shows that 3-6 Hz peaks are due to baroreceptors since coherence decreased in > 19 days old while remaining unchanged in < 2 weeks old piglets. The 8-12 Hz band (present in normal coherence after 21 days) was revealed in piglets < 14 days old after removal of respiratory modulation by partialization; similarly increased coherence was also observed in the 16-18 Hz band through 3 weeks.

The metabotropic glutamate receptor agonist (1S,3R)-1-aminocyclopentane-1,3 dicarboxylic acid (ACPD) at concentrations above 60 microM produced stereotypic oscillatory activity in CA3 pyramidal cells of rat hippocampal slices. This oscillatory activity consisted of trains of depolarizations with overriding action potentials. On average, individual trains lasted 7 sec and recurred at intervals of 24 sec.

Slow inhibition was investigated by stimulating inhibitory neurons at the border of stratum radiatum and lacunosum-moleculare with focal microapplications of glutamate, while recording resultant slow inhibitory postsynaptic potentials in CA1 pyramidal neurons in rat hippocampal slices. The slow inhibitory postsynaptic potentials evoked had an average peak amplitude of -2.2 mV, measured at -60 mV.

This laboratory has previously reported that the maternal opioid analgesia associated with pregnancy and parturition is mediated, at least in part, by a maternal spinal cord dynorphin/kappa opioid system. This analgesia is accompanied by an increase in dynorphin peptides (1-17 and 1-8) in the lumbar spinal cord. Levels of trypsin-generated arginine6-leucine-enkephalin (Leu-Enk-Arg)-immunoreactive determinants were also determined and used to reflect the content of dynorphin precursor intermediates.
