A change in the sign of the ground-state electron spin polarization (ESP) is reported in complexes where an organic radical (nitronylnitroxide, NN) is covalently attached to a donor-acceptor chromophore two different -phenylene bridges in () and () (bpy = 5,5'-di--butyl-2,2'-bipyridine, CAT = 3--butylcatecholate, -Ph = -phenylene). These molecules represent a new class of chromophores that can be photoexcited with visible light to produce an initial exchange-coupled, 3-spin (bpy˙, CAT˙ = semiquinone (SQ), and NN), charge-separated doublet S (S = chromophore excited spin singlet configuration) excited state. Following excitation, the S state rapidly decays to the ground state by magnetic exchange-mediated enhanced internal conversion the T (T = chromophore excited spin triplet configuration) state.

Background: Plant-pollinator community diversity has been found to decrease under conditions of drought stress; however, research into the temporal dimensions of this phenomenon remains limited. In this study, we investigated the effect of seasonal drought on the temporal niche dynamics of entomophilous flowering plants in a water-limited ecosystem. We hypothesized that closely related native and exotic plants would tend to share similar life history and that peak flowering events would therefore coincide with phylogenetic clustering in plant communities based on expected phenological responses of plant functional types to limitations in soil moisture availability.

Background: Converting electronic health record (EHR) entries to useful clinical inferences requires one to address the poor scalability of existing implementations of Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMM) for repeated measures. The major computational bottleneck concerns the numerical evaluation of multivariable integrals, which even for the simplest EHR analyses may involve millions of dimensions (one for each patient). The hierarchical likelihood (h-lik) approach to GLMMs is a methodologically rigorous framework for the estimation of GLMMs that is based on the Laplace Approximation (LA), which replaces integration with numerical optimization, and thus scales very well with dimensionality.

Heparanase (HPA) is a critical enzyme involved in the remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM), and its elevated expression has been linked with diseases such as various types of cancer and inflammation. The detection of heparanase enzymatic activity holds tremendous value in the study of the cellular microenvironment, and search of molecular therapeutics targeting heparanase, however, no structurally defined probes are available for the detection of heparanase activity. Calculated conductance through Au -S-Bridge-S-Au (Bridge = organic σ/π-system) constructs are compared to experimentally-determined magnetic exchange coupling parameters in a series of TpZnSQ-Bridge-NN complexes, where Tp = hydro-tris(3-cumenyl-1-methylpyrazolyl)borate ancillary ligand, Zn = diamagnetic zinc(ii), SQ = semiquinone ( = 1/2), and NN = nitronylnitroxide radical ( = 1/2). We report the excited-state behavior of a structurally simple -sulfoxide complex, -S,S-[Ru(bpy)(dmso)], as investigated by femtosecond pump-probe spectroscopy. The results reveal that a single photon prompts phototriggered isomerization of one or both dmso ligands to yield a mixture of -S,O-[Ru(bpy)(dmso)] and -O,O-[Ru(bpy)(dmso)]. The quantum yields of isomerization of each product and relative product distribution are dependent upon the excitation wavelength, with longer wavelengths favoring the double isomerization product, -O,O-[Ru(bpy)(dmso)].

We revise the Afrotropical species group, motivated by the discovery of new diversity in Kenya and South Africa. Whilst is mainly a holarctic genus, the group is restricted to high altitude regions of eastern Africa and temperate parts of South Africa, from where we describe the southernmost in the world. The following new species are introduced: from Mount Kenya in central Kenya, a widespread species in South Africa, from the Kamiesberg and northeastern Cederberg ranges in the Northern and Western Cape Provinces of South Africa and from the Agulhas Plain, Western Cape Province, South Africa.
