Chalcophosphate metasurfaces with multipolar resonances and electro-optic tuning.

RSC Adv

October 2024

Air Force Research Laboratory, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate, Wright-Patterson AFB Ohio 45433 USA.

We computationally analyze the electro-optic response of metasurfaces consisting of interconnected nanoantennas with multipolar resonances using a chalcophosphate, SnPS, as the active material. SnPS has large electro-optic coefficients and relatively low Curie temperature (<70 °C), allowing for strong changes in the refractive index of the material under moderate electric fields if the temperature can be finely controlled in proximity of the Curie point. Through numerical simulations, we show that metasurfaces designed with this nanostructured material demonstrate a significant shift of multipolar resonances upon biasing, despite moderate refractive-index values of the chalcophosphate and reduced mode localization due to this.

Integrative taxonomic practices that combine multiple lines of evidence for species delimitation greatly improve our understanding of intra- and inter-species variation and biodiversity. However, extended phenotypes remain underutilized despite their potential as a species-specific set of extracorporeal morphological and life history traits. Primarily relying on variations in wing patterns has caused taxonomic confusion in the genus , which are gall-inducing flies on Asteraceae plants in western North America.

Hairy cell leukemia is an uncommon B-cell malignancy with excellent response to purine analogs and to targeted therapies such as ibrutinib and vemurafenib. However, purine analogs are known to be highly immunosuppressive and the infection burden in this patient population with current therapies is unknown. We therefore conducted a retrospective cohort study following 149 patients.

Faced with a growing opioid overdose crisis, emergency departments (EDs) are increasingly hiring peers-people with lived experiences of addiction and recovery-to work with patients in the ED who have opioid use disorders (OUDs) or who have experienced an opioid overdose. Despite a clear need for more support for patients with OUD and rapid expansion in grant funding for peer programs, there are limited data on how these programs affect clinical outcomes and how they are best implemented within the ED. In this narrative review, we synthesize the existing evidence on how to develop and implement peer programs for OUD in the ED setting.

In recent years, the 'kirigami' technique has gained significant attention for creating meta-structures and meta-materials with exceptional characteristics, such as unprecedented stretchability. These properties, not typically inherent in the original materials or structures, present new opportunities for applications in stretchable and wearable electronics. However, despite its scientific and practical significance, the application of kirigami patterning on a monolayer of tungsten disulfide (WS), an emerging two-dimensional (2D) material with exceptional mechanical, electronic, and optical properties, has remained unexplored.

American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) individuals have the highest rates of opioid overdose mortality and chronic pain (CP) compared to other racial/ethnic groups in the United States. These individuals also report higher rates of pain anxiety and pain catastrophizing, which are both associated with poorer outcomes and risk for opioid misuse (OM) and opioid use disorder (OUD) among individuals with CP. Yet, no prior studies have examined rates of comorbid pain and OUD among AI/AN adults.

In root nodule symbioses (RNS) between nitrogen (N)-fixing bacteria and plants, bacterial symbionts cycle between nodule-inhabiting and soil-inhabiting niches that exert differential selection pressures on bacterial traits. Little is known about how the resulting evolutionary tension between host plants and symbiotic bacteria structures naturally occurring bacterial assemblages in soils. We used DNA cloning to examine soil-dwelling assemblages of the actinorhizal symbiont in sites with long-term stable assemblages in ssp.

Nasal Injuries and Issues in Athletes.

Curr Sports Med Rep

January 2024

University of New Mexico Albuquerque, Pediatric Sports Medicine, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM.

Nasal injuries and issues are widespread in athletic populations and can adversely affect training, performance, and overall well-being. Causes can typically be understood as cellular (allergic, nonallergic, and infectious rhinitis) or structural (static vs dynamic obstruction, trauma), and diagnosis and management differ accordingly. Upper respiratory tract infections, a subtype of infectious rhinitis, remain the most common illnesses among athletes.

A series of oligothiophene bis(dioxolene) complexes, SQ-Th-SQ (SQ = = ½TpZn(3--butyl-orthosemiquinonate); Tp = tris(5-cumenyl-3-methylpyrazolyl)borate anion) have been synthesized, structurally characterized, and studied as a function of the number of thiophene bridging units, ( = 0-3) using a combination of variable-temperature (VT) electronic absorption and EPR spectroscopies, and VT magnetic susceptibility measurements. The thiophene bridge bond lengths determined by X-ray crystallography display dramatic differences across the SQ-Th-SQ series. Bridge bond deviation values (Σ||) display a progressive change in the nature of the bridge fragment bonding as the number of thiophene groups increases, with quinoidal bridge character for = 1 (SQ-Th-SQ) and biradical character with "aromatic" bridge bond lengths for = 3 (SQ-Th-SQ).
