The Influence of Sports-Related Concussion on Cognition and Landing Biomechanics in Collegiate Athletes.

Injury surveillance data indicate that collegiate athletes are at greater risk for lower extremity (LE) injuries following sports-related concussion (SRC). While the association between SRC and LE injury appears to be clinically relevant up to 1-year post-SRC, little evidence has been provided to determine possible mechanistic rationales. Thus, we aimed to compare collegiate athletes with a history of SRC to matched controls on biomechanical and cognitive performance measures associated with LE injury risk.

Identification of Parkinson's disease PACE subtypes and repurposing treatments through integrative analyses of multimodal data.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a serious neurodegenerative disorder marked by significant clinical and progression heterogeneity. This study aimed at addressing heterogeneity of PD through integrative analysis of various data modalities. We analyzed clinical progression data (≥5 years) of individuals with de novo PD using machine learning and deep learning, to characterize individuals' phenotypic progression trajectories for PD subtyping.

Capturing patient mobility levels in the hospital: An examination of nursing charting and behavioural mapping.

Aims: Our study aimed to (1) validate the accuracy of nursing mobility documentation and (2) identify the most effective timings for behavioural mapping.

Design: We monitored the mobility of 55 inpatients using behavioural mapping throughout a nursing day shift, comparing the observed mobility levels with the nursing charting in the electronic health record during the same period.

Results: Our results showed a high level of agreement between nursing records and observed mobility, with improved accuracy observed particularly when documentation was at 12 PM or later.

Objective: To examine the emotional distress situation among hospitality industry workers and their access to and use of health care including telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: A survey was administered on the Qualtrics platform both in English and Spanish from November 18, 2020, to November 30, 2020, through the Culinary Workers Union in Nevada. A total of 1182 union members participated in the survey, of whom 892 completed the survey.

Burn injuries are a significant public health concern, causing life-threatening complications and substantial hospitalization costs for patients. It has been shown that burn injuries may affect individuals differently based on demographic factors and socioeconomic status, among other variables. In the Southwestern United States with high ambient temperatures, specific burn etiologies, such as pavement burns, may pose a disproportionately high risk for disadvantaged communities and homeless individuals.

The effects of intermittent fasting on body composition and cardiometabolic health in adults with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Aim: To perform a meta-analysis to investigate the effects of intermittent fasting (IF), as compared with either a control diet (CON) and/or calorie restriction (CR), on body composition and cardiometabolic health in individuals with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched from their inception to March 2024 to identify original randomized trials with parallel or crossover designs that studied the effects of IF on body composition and cardiometabolic health. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) or standardized mean differences with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using random-effects models.

Introduction: Cutaneous traction is used to temporize lower extremity fractures and relies on friction between the skin and surrounding material to apply a longitudinal force. This circumferential compressive force can lead to pressure sores, skin sloughing, or compressive neuropathies. These complications have been reported in up to 11% of patients when the cutaneous traction relies on adhesive tapes, plaster, and rubber bandages being in immediate contact with the skin.

Effects of intermittent fasting combined with exercise on serum leptin and adiponectin in adults with or without obesity: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials.

Context: Intermittent fasting (IF) and exercise training (Exe) have been evaluated in several studies for improving cardiometabolic biomarkers related to weight loss. However, further investigation is required to understand the potential effects on leptin and adiponectin concentrations. IF protocols have been shown to be efficient in improving adipokines, but further research is required to determine whether or not IF regimens combined with Exe are superior to Exe alone.

Downstream Target Analysis for miR-365 among Oral Squamous Cell Carcinomas Reveals Differential Associations with Chemoresistance.

Expression of microRNAs, such as miR-365, is known to be dysregulated in many tumors, including oral cancers, although little is known about their role or functions. The objective of this project is to evaluate the downstream targets of miR-365 to determine any potential pathways or effects. Downstream targets for miR-365 (miRdatabase target scores > 90) were used for qPCR screening of oral cancer cell lines (SCC4, SCC9, SCC15, SCC25, CAL27).

Circadian regulation of locomotion, respiration, and arousability in adult blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis).

The blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, is an ectoparasitic arachnid and vector for infectious diseases, including Lyme borreliosis. Here, we investigate the diurnal activity and respiration of wild-caught and lab-reared adult ticks with long-term video recording, multi-animal tracking and high-resolution respirometry. We find male and female ticks are in a more active, more arousable state during circadian night.

Since late 2019, the world has been devastated by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) induced by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), with more than 760 million people affected and ∼seven million deaths reported. Although effective treatments for COVID-19 are currently limited, there has been a strong focus on developing new therapeutic approaches to address the morbidity and mortality linked to this disease. An approach that is currently being investigated is the use of exosome-based therapies.

Conformational Switch of a Peptide Provides a Novel Strategy to Design Peptide Loaded Porous Organic Polymer for Pyroptosis Pathway Mediated Cancer Therapy.

While peptide-based drug development is extensively explored, this strategy has limitations due to rapid excretion from the body (or shorter half-life in the body) and vulnerability to protease-mediated degradation. To overcome these limitations, a novel strategy for the development of a peptide-based anticancer agent is introduced, utilizing the conformation switch property of a chameleon sequence stretch (PEP1) derived from a mycobacterium secretory protein, MPT63. The selected peptide is then loaded into a new porous organic polymer (PG-DFC-POP) synthesized using phloroglucinol and a cresol derivative via a condensation reaction to deliver the peptide selectively to cancer cells.

Outcome of an Accelerated Treatment Algorithm for Patients Developing Diarrhea as a Complication of Ipilimumab-Based Cancer Immunotherapy in a Community Practice.

Immune-mediated diarrhea represents a serious complication of checkpoint inhibitor therapy, especially following ipilimumab-based treatment. Efficient diagnosis and control of diarrhea remains an ongoing challenge. We developed an accelerated management paradigm for patients with ipilimumab-induced diarrhea.

Using concept mapping to identify recruitment and engagement strategies for inclusion of LGBTQIA+ populations in Alzheimer's disease and related dementia research.

Introduction: Past Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) research has not considered ways to ensure the representation of diverse sexual and gender minorities. This study used concept mapping (CM) to identify strategies for engaging and recruiting LGBTQIA+ older adults living with memory loss and their caregivers into ADRD research.

Methods: CM, involving brainstorming, thematic analysis, and rating of strategies, was conducted with 46 members from one national and three local community advisory boards.
