Speech-language pathologists and board-certified behavior analysts both provide important support services to children who are candidates for augmentative and alternative communication. Current assessment practices neglect critical socioecological factors that are necessary to inform communication-based interventions. By leveraging the unique knowledge, research, and expertise of both disciplines, an interprofessional approach to assessment may help realize individualized or precision interventions and personalized supports that address the unique communication needs of each person.

In pancreatic cancer, the robust fibroinflammatory stroma contributes to immune suppression and renders tumors hypoxic, altering intratumoral metabolic pathways and leading to poor survival. One metabolic enzyme activated during hypoxia is lactate dehydrogenase A (LDHA). As a result of its promiscuous activity under hypoxia, LDHA produces L-2 hydroxyglutarate (L-2HG), an epigenetic modifier, that regulates the tumor transcriptome.

The extrachromosomal elements of the Naegleria genus: How little we know.

Plasmid

May 2021

Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha, NE, USA. Electronic address:

There are currently 47 characterized species in the Naegleria genus of free-living amoebae. Each amoeba has thousands of extrachromosomal elements that are closed circular structures comprised of a single ribosomal DNA (rDNA) copy and a large non-rDNA sequence. Despite the presence of putative open reading frames and introns, ribosomal RNA is the only established transcript.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical cancer is the most common cancer among women in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in Tanzania, where radiotherapy is limited to the Ocean Road Cancer Institute in Dar es Salaam.
  • A study comparing cervical cancer incidence in Mwanza and Mbeya from 2011 to 2014 revealed significant underreporting, with only 24.6% of patients from Mwanza and 32.8% from Mbeya receiving treatment at ORCI.
  • Establishing local radiotherapy facilities and improving hospital record linkage is crucial to enhance treatment access and patient survival in remote regions of Tanzania.

Primary amyloidosis is a plasma cell dyscrasia characterised by excess production of abnormal immunoglobulin light chains with their subsequent accumulation in kidneys, heart, liver as well as gastrointestinal tract and bone marrow 1-21, 2. These tissue deposits take the form of a fibrillar protein which damages the involved organ in proportion to the extent of the infiltration and roughly parallels the duration of the disease. Most cases have evidence of the underlying lymphoplasmacytoid neoplasm recognisable in two ways.

Current understanding of the mechanisms behind the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has led to the development of therapies involving biologic agents that target specific mediators of the disease process. Although the biologic agents used to treat RA share the ability to alter the cytokine cascade, they differ in ways that are clinically important. For example, they vary with regard to how they block cytokine activity (ie, as receptors, as receptor blockers, or as anticytokine antibodies) and the particular cytokine they target (eg, tumor necrosis factor [TNF] versus interleukin-1).
