Surgeons in training have a limited opportunity to practice their skills in a realistic surgical environment. Surgical training models are expensive and are often single-use exercises involving consumable supplies. The goal of the work presented in this paper is to increase surgeon training time by developing a surgical training simulator that is portable, inexpensive, and offers a realistic surgical environment.

Background: Orbital decompression is recommended for TED especially in the treatment of severe, refractory cases yet there are no clear guidelines regarding the optimal surgical approach. Previously conducted surveys assessed variations in the management of TED but only amongst ophthalmologists. Our study attempts to better characterize surgical and perioperative preferences amongst otolaryngologists in the management of TED.

Objectives: This study describes clinical characteristics and management strategies for patients with factor Xa (FXa) inhibitor-related traumatic non-intracranial bleeds who were treated with andexanet alfa or four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4F-PCC).
Methods: An observational cohort study (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT05548777) was conducted using electronic health records from 354 US hospitals.
Background: Mitral annular disjunction (MAD), posterior displacement of the mitral valve leaflet hinge point, predisposes to arrhythmias or sudden cardiac death. We evaluated the burden of MAD, mitral valve prolapse (MVP), and mitral regurgitation (MR) by heritable thoracic aortic disease gene in a cross-sectional analysis of 2014-2023 data in the Montalcino Aortic Consortium registry.
Methods And Results: MAD was determined by direct measurement of echocardiographic images.

Background And Aims: Virtual reality is an emerging technology in rehabilitation. This umbrella review aimed to identify, critically appraise, and summarize current systematic reviews on the effects of virtual reality on stroke rehabilitation.
Methods: Five biomedical databases, PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and Scopus were searched from inception to December 30th, 2023, for systematic reviews with or without meta-analyses published in English.

The number of peptide-like scaffolds found in late-stage drug development is increasing, but a critical unanswered question in the field is whether substituents (side chains) or the backbone drive passive permeability. The backbone is scrutinized in this study. Five series of macrocyclic peptidic compounds were prepared, and their passive permeability was determined (PAMPA, Caco-2), to delineate structure-permeability relationships.

Methods that are currently used in clinical practice are often time consuming, require expensive equipment, trained personnel, and therefore have limited applications in low resource environments. Molecular identification methods address some of these shortcomings.

It is known that conventional antigen presentation involves phagocytosis of antigens followed by its internalization in endocytic compartments and presentation of epitopes through MHC class II molecules for CD4 T cells. However, since 1976 a cross-presentation pathway has been studied, in which CD8 T cells are activated via MHC class I with antigens acquired through phagocytosis or endocytosis by dendritic cells (DCs). Among some important molecules involved in the cross-presentation, the C-type lectin receptor of the Dectin-1 cluster (CLECs), particularly the CLEC9A receptor, not only is expressed in dendritic cells but also presents a pivotal role in this context.

The use of decellularized extracellular matrix products in tissue regeneration is quite alluring yet practically challenging due to the limitations of its availability, harsh processing techniques, and host rejection. Scaffolds obtained by either incorporating extracellular matrix (ECM) material or coating the surface can resolve these challenges to some extent. However, these scaffolds lack the complex 3D network formed by proteins and growth factors observed in natural ECM.

Abstract: Ingestion of alcohol not intended for consumption, also known as surrogate alcohols, is well-documented in patients with alcohol use disorder. Ingestion of surrogate alcohols may lead to higher morbidity and mortality than standard alcohol consumption alone.

Introduction: Directional Leads (dLeads) represent a new technical tool in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), and a rapidly growing population of patients receive dLeads.
Research Question: The European Association of Neurosurgical Societies(EANS) functional neurosurgery Task Force on dLeads conducted a survey of DBS specialists in Europe to evaluate their use, applications, advantages, and disadvantages.
Material And Methods: EANS functional neurosurgery and European Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (ESSFN) members were asked to complete an online survey with 50 multiple-choice and open questions on their use of dLeads in clinical practice.
Background: Cerebral embolic protection devices (CEPD) capture embolic material in an attempt to reduce ischemic brain injury during transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Prior reports have indicated mixed results regarding the benefits of these devices. With new data emerging, we performed an updated meta-analysis examining the effect of CEPD during transcatheter aortic valve replacement on various clinical, neurological, and safety parameters.

Unlabelled: Factor V Leiden is an inheritable pro-thrombotic genetic condition caused by a point mutation at the 506 codon, resulting in activated protein C resistance. APC resistance has been shown to contribute to the development of venous thrombosis. However, the role of FVL in AMI has yet to be well defined in the current literature.
