Metastatic breast cancer (mBC) is responsible for >90% of breast cancer-related deaths. Microtubule-targeting agents (MTAs) are the front-line treatment for mBC. However, the effectiveness of MTAs is frequently limited by the primary or acquired resistance.

Selecting qualified candidates each year for residency positions has become more difficult in recent years, due to the sharp increase in Otolaryngology applicants. Although there are objective measures that can be used to directly compare medical students during the initial screening process, most information in the application is highly subjective and/or variable across institutions. Many programs count the total posters/presentations and publications to gauge scholarship.

Mycothiol -transferase (MST) (encoded by the gene) was previously identified as the enzyme responsible for the transfer of Mycothiol (MSH) to xenobiotic acceptors in () during xenobiotic stress. To further characterize the functionality of MST and the possible roles , X-ray crystallographic, metal-dependent enzyme kinetics, thermal denaturation studies, and antibiotic MIC determination in knockout strain were performed. The binding of MSH and Zn increases the melting temperature by 12.

Developing new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for CAD treatment are critically needed, especially for an early accurate CAD detection and further timely intervention. In this study, we successfully isolated human plasma small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) from four stages of CAD patients, that is, healthy control, stable plaque, non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction, and ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

The relationship between metal exposure/essential metal dyshomeostasis and PAH/right ventricular dysfunction is less investigated. The aim of this study is to investigate vegetable consumptions and metal levels between PAH patients and controls.

Williams Syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder exhibiting cognitive and behavioral abnormalities, including increased social motivation, risk of anxiety and specific phobias along with perturbed motor function. Williams Syndrome is caused by a microdeletion of 26-28 genes on chromosome 7, including , which encodes a transcription factor suggested to play a role in the behavioral profile of Williams Syndrome. Duplications of the full region also lead to frequent autism diagnosis, social phobias, and language delay.

Despite their diversity, global distribution, and apparent effects on host biology, the rules of life that govern variation in microbiomes among host species remain unclear, particularly in freshwater organisms. In this study, we sought to assess whether geographic location, taxonomy (order, family, and genus), or functional feeding group (FFG) designations would best explain differences in the gut microbiome composition among macroinvertebrates sampled across 10 National Ecological Observatory Network's (NEON) freshwater stream sites in the United States. Subsequently, we compared the beta diversity of microbiomes among locations, taxonomy (order, family, and genus), and FFGs in a single statistical model to account for variation within the source microbial community and the types of macroinvertebrates sampled across locations.

Clinical presentation can vary, and although diagnosis can often be made during physical examination, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) can be useful in cases where the diagnosis is unclear. Our case underscores to clinicians the utility of POCUS in diagnosing inguinal hernias.

Objective: The modified 5-item frailty index (mFI-5) is a concise, comorbidity-based risk stratification tool that can predict adverse outcomes after surgery. The goal of this study was to understand the frailty of patients undergoing surgery for temporal encephalocele or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak and the utility of mFI-5 for predicting increased post-operative outcomes.
Methods: A retrospective review of adults with temporal encephalocele or CSF leak who underwent middle cranial fossa (MCF) approach craniotomies with or without mastoidectomy from January 2015 through August 2021 at a tertiary care academic medical center was performed.
Climate change is known to increase the frequency and intensity of hot days (daily maximum temperature ≥30°C), both globally and locally. Exposure to extreme heat is associated with numerous adverse human health outcomes. This study estimated the burden of heat-related illness (HRI) attributable to anthropogenic climate change in North Carolina physiographic divisions (Coastal and Piedmont) during the summer months from 2011 to 2016.

Background: Accuracy of imaging modalities for gallbladder disease(GBD) remains questionable. We hypothesize ultrasonography(US), computed tomography(CT), and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) poorly correlate with final pathologic analysis.
Methods: This was a retrospective review of all patients who underwent cholecystectomy at our institution.
Background We describe sex-differential disease patterns and outcomes of >20.6 million cardiovascular emergency department encounters in the United States. Methods and Results We analyzed primary cardiovascular encounters from the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample between 2016 and 2018.

Background: Somatostatin (SST) and cholecystokinin (CCK) are peptide hormones that regulate the endocrine system, cell proliferation and neurotransmission.
New Method: We utilized the novel Easi-CRISPR system to generate two knock-in mouse strains with Cre recombinase in SST- and CCK-expressing cells and validated their utility in the developing and adult brain tissues.
Results: The full nomenclature for the newly generated strains are C57BL/6-Sst and C57BL/6-Cck.

Background: Serotype 24F is one of the emerging pneumococcal serotypes after the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV). We aimed to identify lineages driving the increase of serotype 24F in France and place these findings into a global context.
Methods: Whole-genome sequencing was performed on a collection of serotype 24F pneumococci from asymptomatic colonisation (n=229) and invasive disease (n=190) isolates among individuals younger than 18 years in France, from 2003 to 2018.

Introduction: Pegcetacoplan, a pegylated penta-decapeptide, targets complement C3 to control both intravascular and extravascular hemolysis. This systematic review aims to study the efficacy and safety of pegcetacoplan in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH).
Methods: We performed a comprehensive and systematic literature search for all studies on PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, and clinicaltrials.

Despite the introduction of vaccines and drugs for SARS-CoV-2, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread throughout the world. In severe COVID-19 patients, elevated levels of proinflammatory cytokines have been detected in the blood, lung cells, and bronchoalveolar lavage, which is referred to as a cytokine storm, a consequence of overactivation of the NLR family pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome and resultant excessive cytokine production. The hyperinflammatory response and cytokine storm cause multiorgan impairment including the central nervous system, in addition to a detriment to the respiratory system.

For 2 years we met virtually, but this year's in-person format will allow the ever-so-important and quintessential creativity and networking to flow again. What a pleasure and joy to be able to see everyone! Importantly, all conference proceedings are also streamed (and available recorded) online for those unable to travel on this occasion.

Despite these changes, few studies have assessed real-world treatment patterns, healthcare resource utilization (HCRU), and costs among people with PAH using recent data. We conducted a retrospective cohort study using administrative claims from the HealthCore Integrated Research Database®.

Background: Previous cholecystectomy is common in patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS). An intact gallbladder is beneficial in preventing cirrhosis in SBS patients, but the nutritional consequences of cholecystectomy are largely unknown. Our aim was to evaluate the effect of pre-SBS cholecystectomy on need for chronic parenteral nutrition (PN).
