Often in land use evaluations, especially those in developing countries, only the financial aspect receives serious attention, while the social and ecological values are overlooked. This study compared the social and ecological values of four land use types (small-scale woodlot [SSW], boundary tree and shrub planting [BTP], homestead tree and shrub growing [HTG] and cereal farming [CF]) by a criteria-based scoring approach using a bao game. The impacts of local wealth status and proximity to a forest on the value the community renders to the land use types were also assessed.

Background: The aim of this study was to analyse the potential greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) for regionally alternative produced protein-rich feedstuffs (APRFs) which are utilized for dairy cattle in Austria in comparison to solvent-extracted soybean meal (SBME). In addition to GHGE from agriculture and related upstream supply chains, the effects of land use change were calculated and were included in the results for GHGE. Methyl 4-azido-4-deoxy-β-L-arabinopyranoside has been synthesized in five steps starting from methyl β-D-xylopyranoside in a multigram scale without chromatographic purification in 78% overall yield. The transformation relied on selective tosylation/nosylation at O-4 followed by acylation, S(N)2 displacement with sodium azide and subsequent deprotection. The methyl 4-azido-4-deoxy-arabinoside was then converted into allyl, propenyl, ω-bromohexyl and chlorethoxyethyl spacer glycosides by transglycosylation with the respective alcohols in good yields and fair anomeric selectivity.

To design a generic purification platform and to combine the advantages of fusion protein technology and matrix-assisted refolding, a peptide affinity medium was developed that binds inclusion body-derived N(pro) fusion proteins under chaotropic conditions. Proteins were expressed in Escherichia coli using an expression system comprising the autoprotease N(pro) from Pestivirus, or its engineered mutant called EDDIE, with C-terminally linked target proteins. Upon refolding, the autoprotease became active and cleaved off its fusion partner, forming an authentic N-terminus.

This paper reports density functional theory study of the structural and mechanical properties of tobermorite mineral (9 Å phase) as one of the main component of cementitious materials in a concrete chemistry. Calculated bulk modulus and elastic constants reflect a relatively high resistance of the tobermorite structure with respect to external isostatic compression. Moreover, the elastic constants proved the anisotropic character of the tobermorite structure.

The specific isoflavone composition of nutritional supplements is commonly not-labeled, although the stated amounts are strongly dependent on the present isoflavone conjugates. Hence, 11 soy-based dietary supplements were characterized via a newly established ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) method, on both their native conjugated isoflavone spectra, as well as on quantitative amounts derived as total aglycones after enzymatic hydrolysis utilizing Helix pomatia juice. Capitalizing on sub-2 microm particles, the established RP-UPLC technique facilitated efficient chromatographic separation of all 12 soy intrinsic isoflavone forms within 10 min.

Isolation of a microsomal membrane fraction is a common procedure in studies involving membrane proteins. By conventional definition, microsomal membranes are collected by centrifugation of a postmitochondrial fraction at 100,000g in an ultracentrifuge, a method originally developed for large amounts of mammalian tissue. We present a method for isolating microsomal-type membranes from small amounts of Arabidopsis thaliana plant material that does not rely on ultracentrifugation but instead uses the lower relative centrifugal force (21,000g) of a microcentrifuge.

Bacterial cellulose produced by the gram-negative bacterium Gluconacetobacter xylinum was found to be an excellent native starting material for preparing shaped ultra-lightweight cellulose aerogels. The procedure comprises thorough washing and sterilization of the aquogel, quantitative solvent exchange and subsequent drying with supercritical carbon dioxide at 40 degrees C and 100 bar. The average density of the obtained dry cellulose aerogels is only about 8 mg x cm(-3) which is comparable to the most lightweight silica aerogels and distinctly lower than all values for cellulosic aerogels obtained from plant cellulose so far.

Yeast surface display libraries of human IgG1 Fc regions were prepared in which loop sequences at the C-terminal tip of the CH3 domain were randomized. A high percentage of these library members bound to soluble CD64 and Protein A indicating that the randomization step did not grossly interfere with the overall structure of the displayed Fc. Sorting these libraries by FACS for binders against HER2/neu yielded antigen-specific Fc binders (Fcab; Fc antigen binding) of which one was affinity matured, resulting in Fcab clone H10-03-6 which showed >10-fold improvement in antigen-binding activity versus the parental clone.
