The evolution of placental mammal body sizes: evolutionary history, form, and function.

Oecologia

January 2004

School of Botany and Zoology, University of Natal, P/Bag X01, 3209 Scottsville, South Africa.

The unimodal, right-skewed distribution, most frequently identified in contemporary descriptions of placental mammal body size distributions, masks an underlying multidistribution structure; a long-term evolutionary process that has generated a concatenation of two or three frequency distributions specific to locomotory modes (plantigrade, digitigrade and unguligrade). The Afrotropical assemblages are bimodal, with a tendency towards trimodality, whereas the Nearctic assemblage is unimodal. However, mixtures of two and three normal distributions fitted the Nearctic data well, suggesting a multidistribution structure masked by disproportionate species numbers within locomotory modes.

The isothiocyanate complex of triphenylborane forms an unusual coordination polymer with [K(18-crown-6)](+), both in the solid state and in solution.

The title salt, (1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane-kappa(6)O)[(isothiocyanato)triphenylborato-kappaS]potassium(I), [K(C(19)H(15)BNS)(C(12)H(24)O(6))] or [K(SCNBPh(3))(18-crown-6)], where 18-crown-6 is 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane and [SCNBPh(3)](-) is the (isothiocyanato)triphenylborate anion, exhibits a supramolecular structure that is best described as a helical coordination polymer or molecular screw. This unusual supramolecular structure is based on a framework in which the SCN(-) ion bridges the chelated K(+) ion and the B atom of BPh(3) in a micro(2) fashion. The X-ray crystal structure of the title salt has been determined at 100 (1) and 293 (2) K.

Haemostatic gene polymorphisms in young indian asian subjects with acute myocardial infarction.

Med Sci Monit

October 2003

Department of Medicine, Coronary Care Unit, RK Khan Hospital and Chemical Pathology, University of Natal, Durban, South Africa.

Background: The relationship between haemostatic gene polymorphisms and arterial disease remains unclear. Much of the evidence gathered so far has been obtained from small heterogeneous studies, resulting in inconsistencies. This study focuses on the South African Indian population which not only represents the largest Indian population outside the Indian subcontinent, but also constitutes a genetically discrete group in whom a high incidence of coronary heart disease occurs.

Biochemical traits of lichens differing in relative desiccation tolerance.

New Phytol

October 2003

Department of Agronomy, Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Jamnikarjeva 101, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia.

• Oxidative stress arises when desiccation restricts photosynthesis and light energy is transferred from photo-excited pigments onto ground state oxygen. We tested whether a highly desiccation tolerant lichen, Pseudevernia furfuracea, displays better protection against oxidative stress than more sensitive species, Lobaria pulmonaria and Peltigera polydactyla. • We rehydrated lichens after desiccation periods of 2, 7 and 9 weeks and assessed their viability by measuring CO exchange using IRGA.

Imaging of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Ann Acad Med Singap

July 2003

Nelson Mandela School of Medicine, University of Natal, South Africa.

Imaging plays an important role in the detection and characterisation of opportunistic infections and malignancies in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The imaging features of opportunistic infections are often non-specific, but when examined in the context of CD4 levels will often allow a correct diagnosis to be made. It is important to be aware of specific syndromes such as lymphoproliferative disease and AIDS nephropathy.

Morbidity in children born to women infected with human immunodeficiency virus in South Africa: does mode of feeding matter?

Acta Paediatr

August 2003

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health, Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of Natal, Congella, South Africa.

Aim: To examine infant morbidity risks associated with refraining from breastfeeding where it is used in an attempt to prevent mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Methods: The population consisted of infants born to HIV-infected women in South Africa who were participating in a vitamin A intervention trial to prevent MTCT of HIV. Women chose to breastfeed or formula feed their infants according to UNAIDS guidelines.

Leiomyoma of the bladder in a patient with von Recklinghausen's neurofibromatosis.

J Clin Pathol

September 2003

Department of Pathology, Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of Natal, Congella 4013, Durban, South Africa.

Leiomyomas are an uncommon manifestation of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1) and occur most often in the gastrointestinal tract. Here, they have a proclivity for the proximal small bowel and tend to be multiple. Urinary tract involvement by NF-1 is usually in the form of neurofibromas, and leiomyomas are exceptionally rare.

Identification of women at high STD risk among STD clinic attendees: implications for STD programmes.

Int J STD AIDS

August 2003

Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies, Mtubataba and The Department of Medical Microbiology, Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of Natal, Durban, South Africa.

We showed an association between current infection with a recognized sexually transmitted infection (STI) pathogen and HIV infection in women but not in men with non-ulcerative genital disease. While the accuracy of recognition of male urethritis and genital ulcer syndromes is high, this is significantly less for non-ulcerative STIs in women. The symptoms associated with the latter have a broad differential diagnosis including conditions of a non-STI nature.

Variability at human immunodeficiency virus type 1 subtype C protease cleavage sites: an indication of viral fitness?

J Virol

September 2003

HIV-1 Molecular Virology and Bioinformatics Unit, Africa Centre for Health and Population Studies, and the Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine, University of Natal, Durban, South Africa.

Naturally occurring polymorphisms in the protease of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) subtype C would be expected to lead to adaptive (compensatory) changes in protease cleavage sites. To test this hypothesis, we examined the prevalences and patterns of cleavage site polymorphisms in the Gag, Gag-Pol, and Nef cleavage sites of C compared to those in non-C subtypes. Codon-based maximum-likelihood methods were used to assess the natural selection and evolutionary history of individual cleavage sites.

Ovarian germ cell malignancy and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection: a case report.

Int J Gynecol Cancer

March 2004

Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and MRC/UN Pregnancy Hypertension Research Unit, Nelson R Mandela School of Medicine, University of Natal, Durban, South Africa.

The occurrence of germ cell tumors in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has not been previously reported. However, with the HIV pandemic in certain parts of the world, this association has become a reality. The approach to management as well as the role of adjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy is problematic as many of these therapies are toxic.
