In this work, we combined plasmon-enhanced fluorescence and electrochemical (PEF-EC) transduction mechanisms to realize a highly sensitive dual-transducer aptasensor. To implement two traducers in one biosensor, a novel large-scale nanoimprint lithography process was introduced to fabricate gold nanopit arrays (AuNpA) with unique fringe structures. Light transmitting through the AuNpA samples exhibited a surface plasmon polariton peak overlapping with the excitation peak of the C7 aptamer-associated fluorophore methylene blue (MB).

New strategies for enhancing drug delivery to the blood-brain barrier (BBB) represent a major challenge in treating cerebral diseases. Nanoemulsion-based nanocarriers represent an ideal candidate to improve drug delivery thanks to their versatility in functionalization and cargo protection. Exploiting the van der Waals model of liquids, it is possible to derive analytical formulas for the thermodynamic functions governing solvation, the transfer of a solute molecule from a fixed position in the ideal gas phase to a fixed position in the liquid phase. The solvation Gibbs free energy change consists of two contributions: (a) the high number density of all liquids and the repulsive interactions due to the basic fact that each molecule has its own body leading to the need to spend free energy to produce an appropriate cavity to contain the solute molecule; (b) the ubiquitous intermolecular attractive interactions lead to a gain in free energy for switching-on attractions between the solute molecule and neighboring liquid molecules. Also the solvation entropy change consists of two contributions: (a) there is an entropy loss in all liquids because the cavity presence limits the space accessible to liquid molecules during their continuous translations; (b) there is an entropy gain in all liquids, at room temperature, due to the liquid structural reorganization as a response to the perturbation represented by solute addition.

Equilibrium density fluctuations at the molecular level produce cavities in a liquid and can be analyzed to shed light on the statistics of the number of molecules occupying observation volumes of increasing radius. An information theory approach led to the conclusion that these probabilities should follow a Gaussian distribution. Computer simulations confirmed this prediction across various liquid models if the size of the observation volume is not large.

Ferritins are natural proteins which spontaneously self-assemble forming hollow nanocages physiologically deputed to iron storage and homeostasis. Thanks to their high stability and easy production in vitro, ferritins represent an intriguing system for nanobiotechnology. Gravitational radiation-reaction phenomena occurring in the dynamics of inspiralling compact binary systems are investigated at the first post-Newtonian order beyond the quadrupole approximation in the context of Einstein-Cartan theory, where quantum spin effects are modeled via the Weyssenhoff fluid. We exploit balance equations for the energy and angular momentum to determine the binary orbital decay until the two bodies collide. Our framework deals with both quasi-elliptic and quasi-circular trajectories, which are then smoothly connected.

We investigate the therapeutic potential of Aloin A and Aloin B, two natural compounds derived from Aloe vera leaves, focusing on their neuroprotective and anticancer properties. The structural differences between these two epimers suggest that they may exhibit distinct pharmacological properties. Our investigations revealed that both epimers are not stable in aqueous solution and tend to degrade rapidly, with their concentration decreasing by over 50% within approximately 12 h.

The binding of the potential drug [VO(8-HQ)], where 8-HQ is 8-hydroxyquinolinato, with hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) was evaluated through spectroscopic (electron paramagnetic resonance, EPR, and UV-visible), spectrometric (electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, ESI-MS), crystallographic (X-ray diffraction, XRD), and computational (DFT and docking) studies. ESI-MS indicates the interaction of [VO(8-HQ)(HO)] and [VO(8-HQ)(HO)] species with HEWL. Room temperature EPR spectra suggest both covalent and non-covalent binding of the two different V-containing fragments.
