Article Synopsis
  • Rüppell's vultures are critically endangered due to human activities like habitat loss, climate change, and poisoning, affecting their nesting and breeding sites.
  • The study used species distribution modeling (SDM) with four algorithms to determine suitable habitats for these vultures in Kenya, using data from biodiversity and environmental sources.
  • Findings revealed that most suitable habitats are outside protected areas, highlighting the need for establishing vulture sanctuaries in these regions to improve conservation efforts.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined the prevalence of scab disease in beans and its effect on yield losses among subsistence farmers in Kenya, highlighting common farming practices and challenges faced by these farmers across major bean-growing regions during 2022 and 2023.
  • - It was discovered that scab was widespread, confirmed in all surveyed areas, and that farmers relied heavily on uncertified seeds and limited crop rotation techniques, contributing to their vulnerability to disease and pest infestations.
  • - The research underlines the need for further studies on the impact of farming practices on scab prevalence and suggests implementing training programs for farmers to enhance their understanding of agro-chemical safety and sustainable management of common bean cultivation.

The paucity of fine particulate matter (PM) measurements limits estimates of air pollution mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa. Well calibrated low-cost sensors can provide reliable data especially where reference monitors are unavailable. We evaluate the performance of Clarity Node-S PM monitors against a Tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) 1400a and develop a calibration model in Mombasa, Kenya's second largest city.

Synanthropic bats live in close proximity to humans and domestic animals, creating opportunities for potential pathogen spillover. We explored environmental correlates of occurrence for a widely distributed synanthropic African bat, a species associated with potential zoonotic virusesand estimated current and future environmental suitability in the Taita Hills region and surrounding plains in Taita-Taveta County in southeast Kenya. To project future environmental suitability, we used four Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 general circulation models that capture temperature and precipitation changes for East Africa.

The activity budget of giraffe in various African populations has been studied extensively, revealing that it is affected by body size, foraging patterns, and sex. Foraging patterns show an animal's feeding choices in its environment and are influenced by resource availability, competition, and predation risk. The ability of giraffe to survive and reproduce is significantly impacted by the variation in activity budget and foraging across different ecosystems.

Rhizobia diversity in the rhizosphere is one of the key promoters of biological nitrogen fixation between host legumes and microsymbionts, although related complex interaction may depend on various factors. This research was intended to assess the abundance of indigenous rhizobia isolates under various soil conditions, as well as their effectiveness to nodulate legumes such as soybeans. Factors such as soil properties and legume species influence the volume and symbiotic effectiveness of native rhizobia to nodulate crop legumes.

Key Clinical Message: Cortical venous thrombosis is a rare but severe complication of TBM that requires a high index of suspicion for early diagnosis. The treatment of CVT in TBM is based on anticoagulant therapy, which is known to improve the outcomes of the patients.

Abstract: The case report describes an 18-year-old male in India with symptoms of tubercular meningitis complicated by cortical venous thrombosis.

Background And Aims: Prognostic models provide evidence-based predictions and estimates of future outcomes, facilitating decision-making, patient care, and research. A few of these models have been externally validated, leading to uncertain reliability and generalizability. This study aims to externally validate four models to assess their transferability and usefulness in clinical practice.

Across an elevation gradient, several biotic and abiotic factors influence community assemblages of interacting species leading to a shift in species distribution, functioning, and ultimately topologies of species interaction networks. However, empirical studies of climate-driven seasonal and elevational changes in plant-pollinator networks are rare, particularly in tropical ecosystems. The tongue flap is a suitable alternative to local mucoperiosteal flaps in closure of wide, persistent oronasal communications, surrounded by scarred and fibrotic tissue as a result of previously attempted palatoplasty. Herein, we report two cases with large recurrent oronasal communication closed using the anteriorly based dorsal tongue flap.

Unlabelled: Most governments upscaled technological adaptations and integration into public service delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic policy responses globally. This article analyzes the context of open innovation (OI) applications and initiatives that characterized public innovation trends and impacted government agencies' responses to contain different consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in four critical areas: economic recovery strategies, logistics and supply chain, digital health-care partnerships, and collaborations. We show how policy responses increased the uptake and upscaling of OI strategies in Kenya and South Africa.

HIV-infected children are now living into adolescence and early adulthood in large numbers due to the availability and increased use of antiretroviral therapy (ART). However, receipt of HIV status disclosure among children remains low. We assessed the association between disclosure of HIV status and adherence to ART among children in the Masaka region of Uganda using multivariable logistic regression with generalised linear models with Poisson log-link function and robust variance in Stata software version 15.

Micronutrient deficiencies (hidden hunger), particularly in iron (Fe) and zinc (Zn), remain one of the most serious public health challenges, affecting more than three billion people globally. A number of strategies are used to ameliorate the problem of micronutrient deficiencies and to improve the nutritional profile of food products. These include (i) dietary diversification, (ii) industrial food fortification and supplements, (iii) agronomic approaches including soil mineral fertilisation, bioinoculants and crop rotations, and (iv) biofortification through the implementation of biotechnology including gene editing and plant breeding.
