Blood O2 transport and Hb type have been studied in pouch young and adult of a marsupial, the Tammar Wallaby. The O2-Hb equilibrium curves (at 35.5 degrees C and PCO2 = 34 Torr) had a high P50 in the first few days of life, up to 49 Torr.

The importance of differentiating depressive pseudodementia from true dementia seems to be well recognized by psychiatrists, yet there seems less recognition that other functional psychoses in the elderly can present with symptoms of cognitive impairment. In this report, we describe two patients--one suffering from late onset schizophrenia and one from a manic illness--who were diagnosed as suffering from dementia in the early stages of their illnesses. We discuss some of the difficulties in making diagnoses in these cases which include an historical tendency for clinicians, including psychiatrists, to assume an organic aetiology for first presentation psychoses in old age.

In human erythrocytes, the intracellular presence of malarial parasites (Plasmodium falciparum) markedly changed the permeation characteristics of the nucleosides, adenosine and tubercidin, an adenosine analogue. We report parasite-induced changes in the kinetics of cellular uptake of the nucleosides and in the appearance in infected cells of a nucleoside permeation route of low sensitivity to the classical inhibitor of erythrocytic nucleoside transport, nitrobenzylthioinosine (NBMPR). These changes and a diminution in NBMPR effectiveness during parasite maturation to the trophozoite or schizont stage, suggest the presence in the infected cells of an altered or new nucleoside permeation mechanism of low sensitivity to NBMPR.

The chemical phosphatase butanedione monoxime (BDM) reversibly inhibited twitches and tetanic contractions in bundles of rat soleus fibres in a dose-dependent manner (2-20 mM) but had no effect on the amplitude or time course of action potentials. In addition, BDM reversibly reduced the amplitude of potassium contractures demonstrating a depressant effect on contraction not mediated by action potentials. BDM had no effect on asymmetric charge movement but depressed calcium currents across the surface membrane in voltage-clamped fibres.

Serum rat mucosal mast cell protease II (RMCPII) was measured in protein-deficient rats to assess mucosal mast cell (MMC) activation during primary infection with the nematode, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis, and during systemic anaphylaxis produced by Nippostrongylus antigen in immune animals. In the first study, serum RMCPII increased 4-fold by day 15 after infection. By day 20, serum RMCPII continued to rise in protein-deficient animals, but decreased in nutritionally normal animals.

Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) provides a clinical meeting place for physician, ophthalmologist and immunologist. Some past difficulties in understanding this disease may have reflected too narrow specialization. In this presentation only three eponymous terms will be used --Graves' Disease, Plummer's Disease and Hashimoto's Disease.

Explicit methods are derived for estimating steady-state genetic responses and genetic differences between nucleus and base progeny crops in open nucleus breeding schemes which utilize genetic differences between progeny groups with parents of different ages or between age groups. Explicit methods are also given for estimating proportions which should be selected from the different nucleus and base selection groups so as to maximise genetic responses under each of a range of selection methods. Some basic differences between selection programmes utilizing genetic differences between progeny groups with parents of different ages and those utilizing genetic differences between age groups in nucleus breeding schemes are summarized.

A pulse-polarography method is described for the determination of traces of platinum in ores after fire-assay separation and preconcentration. The silver bead from the fire assay is dissolved and treated with ammonia and ethylenediamine to produce a sensitive catalytic polarographic wave. Measurement of the wave by differential pulse polarography allows determination of Pt with a detection limit of 0.

Experimental conditions are given for the development of a well-defined catalytic polarographic wave for PT(II) after chelation with ethylenediamine. Direct-current polarographic studies of the wave characteristics indicate that it is of the catalytic hydrogen type, sensitive to pH changes, temperature, and electrode characteristics. By differential pulse polarography a single, sharp peak at -1.

The N-oxides of 5-(4-pyridyl)nonane and trioctylamine have been evaluated for use in the extraction of thorium from different mineral acid solutions. The influence of the concentration of the solvents and salting-out agents has been investigated. The possible mechanism of extraction is discussed in the light of the results of extraction isotherms, loading-ratio data and log-log plots of reagent concentration vs.
