Background: Several anthropometric measurements are used to assess cardiovascular risk and progress during clinical treatment. Most commonly used anthropometric measurements include total body weight and body mass index (BMI), with several other simple anthropometric measures typically underused in clinical practice. Herein, we review the evidence on the relationship between different anthropometric measurements and cardiovascular risk in patients with and without cardiovascular disease (CVD).

Imaging in atrial fibrillation: A way to assess atrial fibrosis and remodeling to assist decision-making.

The 2020 ESC atrial fibrillation (AF) guidelines suggest the novel 4S-AF scheme for the characterization of AF. Imaging techniques could be helpful for this objective in everyday clinical practice, and information derived from these techniques reflects basic aspects of the pathophysiology of AF, which may facilitate treatment decision-making, and optimal management of AF patients. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the mechanisms associated with atrial fibrosis and to describe imaging techniques that may help the management of AF patients in clinical practice.

Incidence and survival of lymphoid neoplasms in Spain, 2002-2013: A population-based study from the Spanish Network of Cancer Registries (REDECAN).

Introduction: The aim of this study was to describe incidence, incidence trends and survival patterns of lymphoid neoplasms (LNs) and its subtypes in Spain in the period 2002-2013 using data from the Spanish Network of Cancer Registries (REDECAN).

Materials And Methods: Data were extracted from 13 Spanish population-based cancer registries. LNs incident cases were codified using the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology, third edition (ICD-O-3) and grouped according to the WHO 2008 classification.

Polypharmacy and adverse events in atrial fibrillation: Main cause or reflection of multimorbidity?

Background: Previous evidence indicated that atrial fibrillation (AF) patients with polypharmacy presented increased probability of adverse events. We investigated the prevalence of polypharmacy, risk factors for polypharmacy, and the impact of polypharmacy in clinical outcomes in a 'real-world' cohort of AF patients starting vitamin K antagonists (VKAs).

Methods: Prospective study including AF outpatients starting VKA therapy from July, 2016 to June, 2018.

Oral cancer (OC) is the eighth most common cancer, particularly prevalent in developing countries. Current treatment includes a multidisciplinary approach, involving chemo, radio, and immunotherapy and surgery, which depends on cancer stage and location. As a result of the side effects of currently available drugs, there has been an increasing interest in the search for naturally-occurring bioactives for treating all types of cancer, including OC.

Aim: To investigate the impact of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors on the risk of incident heart failure and adverse cardiovascular outcomes.

Methods: All patients with diabetes who were registered between January 2018 and December 2019 were identified from a federated electronic medical record database (TriNetX) and followed up for 2 years. A 1:1 propensity-score matching (PSM) analysis was performed to balance the SGLT2 inhibitor and non-SGLT2 inhibitor cohorts.

Prostaglandins (PGs) are highly reactive small lipophilic molecules derived from polyunsaturated fatty acids of the cell membrane and play a key role in the resolution of inflammation processes. 15-deoxy-Δ-PGJ (15dPGJ) is a cyclopentenone PG (CyPG) of the J series with anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic effects. This CyPG can signal through: (i) the PGD receptor (DP2) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) or (ii) by covalent binding to protein nucleophiles, such as, thiols groups of cysteine, lysine or histidine via a Michael addition reaction, modifying its structure and function.

A comparison of front-line oral anticoagulants for the treatment of non-valvular atrial fibrillation: effectiveness and safety of direct oral anticoagulants in the FANTASIIA registry.

Introduction: For a long time, vitamin K antagonists (VKA) were the only oral anticoagulation therapy available to reduce adverse events in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. Direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOAC) are at least as effective and safe as VKA with few drug interactions, rapid onset, and short half-life. Four DOACs, dabigatran, apixaban, rivaroxaban, and edoxaban, have demonstrated efficacy and safety for treatment in AF patients.

Optimization of Mesenchymal Stromal Cell (MSC) Manufacturing Processes for a Better Therapeutic Outcome.

MSCs products as well as their derived extracellular vesicles, are currently being explored as advanced biologics in cell-based therapies with high expectations for their clinical use in the next few years. In recent years, various strategies designed for improving the therapeutic potential of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs), including pre-conditioning for enhanced cytokine production, improved cell homing and strengthening of immunomodulatory properties, have been developed but the manufacture and handling of these cells for their use as advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) remains insufficiently studied, and available data are mainly related to non-industrial processes. In the present article, we will review this topic, analyzing current information on the specific regulations, the selection of living donors as well as MSCs from different sources (bone marrow, adipose tissue, umbilical cord, etc.
