J Nutr Health Aging

November 2024

Department of Hematology, Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca, University of Murcia, Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria (IMIB-Arrixaca), Murcia, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on atrial fibrillation (AF) patients starting vitamin K antagonist (VKA) therapy to determine the effect of comorbidities, frailty, and malnutrition on clinical outcomes.
  • The research found that a majority of patients had multiple health issues, and frailty significantly increased the risks for major bleeding and death, while malnutrition heightened the risk for strokes and overall mortality.
  • These findings underline the importance of addressing these factors in AF patients to improve their health outcomes during VKA treatment.

Endothelial activation, Cell-Cell Interactions, and Inflammatory Pathways in Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation Following Cardiac Surgery.

Biomed J

November 2024

Department of Cardiology, Hospital Clínico Universitario Virgen de la Arrixaca, University of Murcia, Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria (IMIB-Arrixaca), CIBERCV, Murcia, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the link between endothelial activation and systemic inflammation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, focusing on how these factors contribute to postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF).
  • Researchers compared 117 patients, including those with permanent AF and POAF, measuring various biological markers and cellular expressions related to heart function and inflammation.
  • Findings indicate that both permanent AF and POAF patients exhibited higher signs of inflammation and endothelial activation, which may lead to atrial remodeling and increased risk of AF compared to non-AF patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Over the past 50 years, more invasive cardiovascular procedures have been performed worldwide, increasing risks of acute brain injury during and after these interventions.
  • Current international guidelines often overlook the issue of acute brain injury from cardiovascular procedures, which can lead to worse medical outcomes and higher healthcare costs.
  • The international Consensus Statement aims to provide recommendations for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of this acute brain injury while also highlighting areas where more research is needed.

School of Biological and Chemical Sciences, University of Galway, University Road, Galway, H91TK33, Ireland.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cause of cancer related deaths worldwide and the prevalence in young people especially is increasing annually. In the search for innovative approaches to treat the disease, drug delivery systems (DDS) are promising owing to their unique properties, which allow improved therapeutic results with lower drug concentrations, overcoming drug resistance and at the same time potentially reducing side effects. Silk fibroin is a biopolymer that can be processed to obtain biocompatible and biodegradable nanoparticles that can be efficiently loaded by surface adsorption with small-molecule therapeutics and allow their transport and sustained release by modulating their pharmacokinetics.

  • The study investigates the genetic factors linked to severe COVID-19, specifically focusing on hospitalized cases in admixed Americans.
  • Researchers conducted the largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) for COVID-19 hospitalization in this population, identifying four significant genetic associations, including two novel loci found in Latin Americans.
  • The findings highlight the importance of including diverse populations in genomic research, aiming to improve understanding of genetic risks associated with COVID-19 across different ethnic groups.

Background: The impact of chronic oral anticoagulant (OACs) use on long-term post-discharge outcomes after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hospitalisation remains unclear. Herein, we compared clinical outcomes up to 2-years after COVID-19 hospitalisation between patients on vitamin K antagonists (VKAs), direct-acting OACs (DOACs) and no OAC therapy.

Methods: Data from TriNetX, a global federated health research network, were used.

Study Objectives: Napping is a common habit in many countries. Nevertheless, studies about the chronic effects of napping on obesity are contradictory, and the molecular link between napping and metabolic alterations has yet to be studied. We aim to identify molecular mechanisms in adipose tissue (AT) that may connect napping and abdominal obesity.

Background: Some clinical characteristics and comorbidities in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients are exclusion criteria in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) investigating oral anticoagulants (OAC). However, these conditions are present also in everyday clinical practice patients. We compared the risk of adverse clinical outcomes between patients with and without RCT exclusion criteria.

Dynamic assessment of CHADS-VASc and HAS-BLED scores for predicting ischemic stroke and major bleeding in atrial fibrillation patients.

Rev Esp Cardiol (Engl Ed)

October 2024

Servicio de Hematología y Oncología Médica, Hospital General Universitario Morales Meseguer, Universidad de Murcia, Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosanitaria (IMIB-Arrixaca), Murcia, Spain.

Introduction And Objectives: Stroke and bleeding risks in atrial fibrillation (AF) are often assessed at baseline to predict outcomes years later. We investigated whether dynamic changes in CHADS-VASc and HAS-BLED scores over time modify risk prediction.

Methods: We included patients with AF who were stable while taking vitamin K antagonists.

Fertilization involves the recognition and fusion of sperm and egg to form a previously unidentified organism. In mammals, surface molecules on the sperm and egg have central roles, and while adhesion is mediated by the IZUMO1-JUNO sperm-egg ligand-receptor pair, the molecule/s responsible for membrane fusion remain mysterious. Recently, MAIA/FCRL3 was identified as a mammalian egg receptor, which bound IZUMO1 and JUNO and might therefore have a bridging role in gamete recognition and fusion.

Evolution of the gasdermin family and pyroptosis.

Electronic address:

Gasdermins have been identified as playing a prominent role in the innate immune response as the executors of a specific type of cell death called pyroptosis. Specific proteolytic cleavage of gasdermins generates an N-terminal that oligomerizes and forms pores in the cell membrane. Although pyroptosis has been widely described in mammals, the importance of gasdermins and gasdermin-like proteins in inducing cell death in other vertebrates, in invertebrates and in other taxa including fungi and bacteria is still being determined.

Background: Hematological neoplasms (HNs) are the first and most common childhood cancers globally. Currently, there is a lack of updated population-based data on the incidence of these cancers in the Spanish pediatric population. This study aimed to describe the incidence and incidence trends of HNs in children (0-14 years) in Spain using data from the Spanish Network of Cancer Registries and to compare the results with other southern European countries.

Background And Purpose: Napping is a widespread practice worldwide and has in recent years been linked to increased abdominal adiposity. Lipase E or encodes the protein hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), an enzyme that plays an important role in lipid mobilization and exhibits a circadian expression rhythm in human adipose tissue. We hypothesized that habitual napping may impact the circadian expression pattern of , which in turn may attenuate lipid mobilization and induce abdominal fat accumulation.

Introduction: In 2021, a type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV2) was isolated from the stool of a patient with acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) admitted to Spain from Senegal. A virological investigation was conducted to characterize and trace the origin of VDPV2.

Methods: We used an unbiased metagenomic approach for the whole-genome sequencing of VDPV2 from the stool (pre-treated with chloroform) and from the poliovirus-positive supernatant.
