Making acute ischemic stroke thrombi visible in MRI imaging.

Sci Rep

May 2024

Clinic for Radiology, Medical Physics, University of Muenster, Albert-Schweitzer-Campus 1, Gebäude A1, 48149, Muenster, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Current MRI techniques for visualizing thrombus behavior in acute ischemic stroke are suboptimal, but can be improved by understanding the T1 and T2 relaxation times of tissues.
  • The study analyzed different MRI sequences and found that the histological composition of clots strongly influences T1 and T2 relaxation times, particularly with fibrin and iron content.
  • Using these insights, the research suggests that two specific MRI sequences (T2w DRIVE and T1w TSE) can effectively depict thrombi as brighter than surrounding brain tissue, helping enhance clot visualization.

In striated muscle, the sarcomeric protein myosin-binding protein-C (MyBP-C) is bound to the myosin thick filament and is predicted to stabilize myosin heads in a docked position against the thick filament, which limits crossbridge formation. Here, we use the homozygous Mybpc2 knockout (C2) mouse line to remove the fast-isoform MyBP-C from fast skeletal muscle and then conduct mechanical functional studies in parallel with small-angle X-ray diffraction to evaluate the myofilament structure. We report that C2 fibers present deficits in force production and calcium sensitivity.

Recent work showed an association of prefrontal dysfunctions in patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and social stress induced rumination. However, up to date it is unclear which etiological features of MDD might cause prefrontal dysfunctions. In the study at hand, we aimed to replicate recent findings, that showed prefrontal activation alterations during the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and subsequently increased stress-reactive rumination in MDD compared to healthy controls.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists found a special marker called SSEA-4 that shows up on immature cells during pregnancy and is also found in a type of cancer called Ewing sarcoma.
  • This marker was present on most cancer cell lines and many tumor samples, and higher levels of SSEA-4 were linked to more aggressive cancer behavior.
  • T cells, which are part of our immune system, can be specially trained to target cells with SSEA-4, making it a promising way to treat this type of cancer in the future.

Background: Prostate cancer (PC) is the most common cancer in men in 112 countries, and accounts for 15% of cancers. Because it cannot be prevented, the rise in cases is inevitable, and improvements in diagnostic pathways and treatments are needed, as there is still a shortage of cost-effective diagnostics and widespread oncologically safe treatment options with measurable quality. As part of the implementation of a Full Cycle of Care, instruments have been developed to achieve value-based medicine, such as consistent commitment to measurability.

Objective: The aim of the study is to identify appropriate definitions and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for each of the eight core outcomes previously selected for genitourinary symptoms associated with menopause: pain with sex, vulvovaginal dryness, vulvovaginal discomfort or irritation, discomfort or pain when urinating, change in most bothersome symptom, distress, bother or interference of genitourinary symptoms, satisfaction with treatment, and side effects.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review to identify possible definitions and PROMs, including their measurement properties. Identified definitions and relevant PROMs with acceptable measurement properties were entered into an international consensus process involving 28 participants from 10 countries to achieve final recommendations for each core outcome.

Background: In 2017, a reform of the German outpatient psychotherapy guideline was carried out, aiming to reduce waiting times and facilitate low-threshold access. This study analyzes the extent to which the implementation of the two new service elements 'psychotherapeutic consultation times' and 'acute short-term psychotherapeutic interventions' improved psychotherapeutic care for patients with mental disorders and chronic physical conditions (cMPs), for patients with mental disorders without chronic physical conditions (MnoP), and elderly patients.

Methods: In a quantitative secondary analysis, we analyzed health insurance data of patients with psychotherapy billing codes obtained from the National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) for the years 2015-2019, evaluating descriptive statistical parameters for specific patient groups and care services.
