VE-cadherin (VEC) is a major endothelial adhesion protein, which controls vascular homeostasis. During vascular diseases, VEC can be shed from the endothelial surface by proteases like ADAM10/17, which cleave the extracellular domain of VEC in response to inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α. The resulting, soluble fragments (sVEC) are discussed as a potential marker for endothelial barrier breakdown.

Previous studies have shown that the absence of the collagen-binding integrin α2β1 confers protection against osteoporosis, primarily by enhancing osteoblast-mediated matrix formation, with a particular increase in collagen type I production. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism underlying this increased matrix production. Our findings demonstrate that osteoblasts lacking integrin α2 secrete a pro-osteogenic factor that activates both TGF-β and BMP signaling pathways.

Diabetes is a major global health issue and as current treatments fail, the search for new antidiabetic drugs is crucial. This investigation, focusing on identifying potential antidiabetic compounds from the endangered plant species Vepris glandulosa, led to the isolation of two known alkaloids, choisyine acetate (1) and choisyine (2). The study established the in vitro inhibitory activities and in silico molecular interaction of the two alkaloids with α-amylase based on IC values, Linewaever-Burk/Dixon plot kinetic analyses and Molecular docking, respectively.

Chitosans are promising multi-functional biomolecules for various applications whose performance is dependent on three key structural parameters, including the pattern of acetylation (PA). To date, chitin deacetylases (CDAs) are the only tool to control the PA of chitosan polymers via their specific mode of action during de- or N-acetylation. For a start, this review summarizes the current state of research on the classification of carbohydrate esterase 4 enzymes, the features in sequence and structure of CDAs, and the different PAs produced by different CDAs during de- or N-acetylation.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common aggressive lymphoma, accounting for ~40% of all cases in adults. Purpose: This study aimed to analyze treatment-related risk factors for sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and an indication for hearing aids (IHA) in medulloblastoma patients after craniospinal radiotherapy (CSRT) and platin-based chemotherapy (PCth).

Methods: A total of 58 patients (116 ears) with medulloblastoma and clinically non-relevant pre-treatment hearing thresholds were included. Cranial radiotherapy and PCth were applied sequentially according to the HIT 2000 study protocol or post-study recommendations, the NOA-07 protocol, or the PNET (primitive neuroectodermal tumor) 5 MB therapy protocol.

The ability to effectively monitor singlet oxygen (O) with fluorescence probes in biological systems is severely restricted mainly by the background autofluorescence of these systems. Though the application of lanthanide complexes as O monitors successfully resolves this problem with time-gated luminescence measurements, the insolubility of these complexes in an aqueous medium heavily limits their application in biological systems. Here, we present a water-soluble O sensor based on a chitosan-europium hybrid material.
