Due to their versatile properties, phenolic compounds are integral to various biologically active molecules, including many pharmaceuticals. However, their application in drug design is often hindered by issues such as poor oral bioavailability, rapid metabolism, and potential toxicity. This review explores the use of phenol bioisosteres-structurally similar compounds that can mimic the biological activity of phenols while potentially offering improved drug-like properties.

Background: The use of 3D-printing in medicine requires a context-specific quality assurance program to ensure patient safety. The process of medical 3D-printing involves several steps, each of which might be prone to its own set of errors. The segmentation error (SegE), the digital editing error (DEE) and the printing error (PrE) are the most important partial errors.

High-risk human papillomaviruses (HPVs) cause various cancers. While type-specific prophylactic vaccines are available, additional anti-viral strategies are highly desirable. Initial HPV cell entry involves receptor-switching induced by structural capsid modifications.

Mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) constitutes a significant portion of carbon (C) pools in wetlands, determining their role as C sinks or sources. Nevertheless, detailed knowledge of the response of MAOM formation pathways to wetland restoration is lacking. Here, we collected 0-20 cm soil samples from two typical wetlands (meadow and peat wetlands) subjected to both grazing and restoration treatments (through micro dam construction) in the Zoige area.

Purpose: We aim to determine the current treatment patterns and recommendations among physicians for cutaneous lymphomas and to identify the types of skin lymphomas for which existing radiation regimens need improvement.
Methods And Materials: A questionnaire from the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer was distributed to all members of the Cutaneous Lymphoma Tumour Group and Radiation Oncology Scientific Council. This online survey included 13 questions regarding treatment practices for patients with cutaneous lymphoma.

Introduction: There is an unmet need for improved detection of intracranial aneurysms (IAs) and distinction between stable and unstable (high rupture risk) IAs. Within the IA wall, synthesis and degradation of type I collagen as the main molecular constituent balance each other to maintain IA stability. We hypothesized that collagen breakdown products could serve as molecular markers for IA presence and instability.

Background: Interrupted inferior vena cava (IVC) is a rare developmental defect characterized by azygos continuation following failure of fusion of one or more of the component parts of the embryological IVC. It occurs in approximately one in 5000 of the general population. It is usually an isolated finding and is generally asymptomatic.

Aims: Cerebral small vessel diseases (SVDs) involve diverse pathologies of the brain's small blood vessels, leading to cognitive deficits. Cerebral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reveals white matter hyperintensities (WMHs), lacunes, microbleeds and enlarged perivascular spaces in SVD patients. Although correlations of MRI and histopathology help to understand the pathogenesis of SVD, they do not explain disease progression.

Background: New treatment approaches are urgently needed to improve the prognosis of children and adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN). Recently, the feasibility of multidisciplinary home treatment that strongly involves the patients' parents/caregivers has been investigated. However, no RCT has yet been performed to test the efficacy and safety of this approach compared to standard treatment approaches, such as inpatient treatment.

Chitin polymers are an essential structural component of fungal cell walls, but host chitinases can weaken them, contributing to disease resistance in fungal pathogens. Chitin oligomers thus produced are immunogenic signal molecules eliciting additional disease resistance mechanisms. Fungi may counteract these, e.

Background: Impairments in language processing in schizophrenia (ScZ) are a central aspect of the disorder but the underlying pathophysiology mechanisms are unclear. In the current study, we tested the hypothesis that neural oscillations are impaired during speech tracking in early-stage ScZ and in participants at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P).
Method: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) was used in combination with source reconstructed time-series to examine delta and theta-band entrainment during continuous speech.

Purpose: To evaluate a consecutive series of patients that presented with ocular findings after contact with the oak processionary caterpillar (OPC) during an epidemic reproduction of the OPC in Germany in 2019 and to assess the 1-year outcome of those eyes with persisting OPC hairs in the cornea.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of 11 eyes (11 patients) that presented in June/July 2019 with acute ocular symptoms after outdoor activity or caterpillar nest removal. Evaluation of patients charts and slit-lamp images up to one year.

Breast cancer holds the highest incidence rate among women. Doxorubicin (DOX) is a potent frontline drug for the treatment of breast cancer. The anticancer mechanisms of DOX include inducing immunogenic cell death in tumor cells, causing damage to tumor DNA, and generating free radicals.

The vasculature of the skeletal system is crucial for bone formation, homoeostasis and fracture repair, yet the diversity and specialization of bone-associated vessels remain poorly understood. Here we identify a specialized type of post-arterial capillary, termed type R, involved in bone remodelling. Type R capillaries emerge during adolescence around trabecular bone, possess a distinct morphology and molecular profile, and are associated with osteoprogenitors and bone-resorbing osteoclasts.
