Episodic ataxias are rare neurological disorders characterized by recurring episodes of imbalance and coordination difficulties. Obtaining definitive molecular diagnoses poses challenges, as clinical presentation is highly heterogeneous, and literature on the underlying genetics is limited. While the advent of high-throughput sequencing technologies has significantly contributed to Mendelian disorders genetics, interpretation of variants of uncertain significance and other limitations inherent to individual methods still leaves many patients undiagnosed.

Amyloidosis concomitant to aortic stenosis usually occurs with myocardial infiltration by the transthyretin protein. To our knowledge, this is the first report of localized amyloidosis of indeterminate type in a severely calcified and functionally unicuspid aortic valve. Isolated dystrophic valvular amyloidosis is believed to be related to fibrocalcific valve disease.

Nine mulard ducks that were being raised for foie gras (steatosis) production went through in vivo shear wave (SW) elastography imaging of their liver during the force-feeding period to investigate changes in liver tissue characteristics. A total of 4 imaging sessions at an interval of 3 to 4 d were conducted at the farm on each animal. Three ducks were sacrificed at the second, third, and fourth imaging sessions for histopathology analysis of all animals at these time points.

Background: The pressure cooker (PC) technique uses a second microcatheter to produce a proximal occlusion to prevent the reflux of liquid embolic agent (LEA) injected through a more distal microcatheter, and can be used to treat arteriovenous malformations and dural arteriovenous fistulae. The liquid embolic Magic Glue (MG) (N-hexyl cyanoacrylate (NHCA)) has been introduced as an alternative to N-butyl cyanoacrylate (NBCA). Our goals were to compare the extent of embolization of rete mirabile with or without the PC technique using NBCA or MG, and to compare the proximal occlusions obtained with MG or NBCA while using the PC technique in a renal arterial model.

Shear wave elastography (speed and dispersion), local attenuation coefficient slope and homodyned-K parametric imaging were used for liver steatosis grading. These ultrasound biomarkers rely on physical interactions between shear and compression waves with tissues at both macroscopic and microscopic scales. These techniques were applied in a context not yet studied with ultrasound imaging, that is, monitoring steatosis of force-fed duck livers from pre-force-fed to foie gras stages.

Background: Diabetic patients present higher level of red blood cell (RBC) aggregation contributing to the development of vascular complications. While it has been suggested that this hematology/rheology parameter could bring additional prognostic information for the management of those patients, RBC aggregation screening is not included as a clinical practice. Most medical centers are not equipped to measure properly this parameter, although sedimentation tests can bring some indication.

Smooth muscle cell (SMC) apoptosis occurs at the onset of enalapril-induced regression of aortic hypertrophy in SHR. A potential mechanism is the correction of endothelial dysfunction (ED) leading to reduced production of reactive oxygen species and enhanced bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO), a potent apoptosis inducer. Stimulants of NO include the precursor L-arginine and the NO synthase cofactor tetrahydrobiopterin (BH(4)), which correct ED in several models.

The Na/K pump plays a key role in the regulation of the intracellular concentrations of monovalent cations and related cell function leading to electrogenesis and excitation-contraction coupling. We focus this review on the analysis of recent data showing that (i) inhibition of the Na/K pump triggers a signaling cascade independently of modulation of the intracellular [Na+]i/[K+]i ratio; (ii) elevation of [Na+]i under sustained inhibition of the Na/K pump leads to expression of a set of genes by [Ca2+]i-dependent and independent pathways; (iii) [Na+]i-sensitive genes are involved in the inhibition of programmed cell death (apoptosis) in vascular smooth muscle cells.
