Child trauma and posttraumatic stress in Cambodia is highly prevalent, perpetuated within a postwar sociocultural context. The examination of locally meaningful expressions of distress is needed to provide culturally sensitive assessment and treatment of trauma-affected Cambodian children. The acceptable, feasible, and sustainable incorporation of expressions of distress into assessment and intervention development relies on key mental health professionals operating in Cambodia, who can provide invaluable perspectives on child trauma experiences in this particular sociocultural context.

The fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is characterized by chronic widespread pain, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and cognitive alterations. A limited efficacy of targeted treatment and a high FMS prevalence (2-5% of the adult population) sums up to high morbidity. Although, altered nociception has been explained with the central sensitization hypothesis, which may occur after neuropathy, its molecular mechanism is not understood.

Guided by the early findings of social scientists, practitioners have long advocated for greater contact between groups to reduce prejudice and increase social cohesion. Recent work, however, suggests that intergroup contact can undermine support for social change towards greater equality, especially among disadvantaged group members. Using a large and heterogeneous dataset (12,997 individuals from 69 countries), we demonstrate that intergroup contact and support for social change towards greater equality are positively associated among members of advantaged groups (ethnic majorities and cis-heterosexuals) but negatively associated among disadvantaged groups (ethnic minorities and sexual and gender minorities).

Amfepramone (AFP) is an appetite-suppressant drug used in the treatment of obesity. Nonetheless, studies on interindividual pharmacokinetic variability and its association with genetic variants are limited. We employed a pharmacokinetic and pharmacogenetic approach to determine possible metabolic phenotypes of AFP and identify genetic markers that could affect the pharmacokinetic variability in a Mexican population.

Humans express a wide array of ideal mate preferences. Around the world, people desire romantic partners who are intelligent, healthy, kind, physically attractive, wealthy, and more. In order for these ideal preferences to guide the choice of actual romantic partners, human mating psychology must possess a means to integrate information across these many preference dimensions into summaries of the overall mate value of their potential mates.

The Prefrontal Cortex (PFC) is one of the principal brain regions studied in consciousness. Previous investigations suggest that the PFC is an important neural hub in both awareness and the manipulation of the content of consciousness. Despite a consensus in the scientific community regarding PFC function in cortico-cortical networks, there is still intense debate as to its role in the thalamocortical network and the formation of content of consciousness.

The concentration of wealth in the hands of a few at the expense of general impoverishment is a major problem in some modern societies. However, there is a general opposition to redistribution policies or to the application of a progressive taxation system. The goal of this research was to explore one factor that might drive the attitudes toward income redistribution: The (de)humanization of high socioeconomic status groups.

Activation of the hedgehog pathway is causative of virtually all sporadic and Gorlin syndrome-related basal cell carcinomas (BCCs), with loss of function of Ptc1 being the most common genomic lesion. Sporadic BCCs also overexpress Dsg2, a desmosomal cadherin normally found in the basal layer. Using a mouse model of Gorlin syndrome (Ptc1 mice), we found that overexpressing Dsg2 in the basal layer (K14-Dsg2/Ptc1 mice) or the superficial epidermis (Inv-Dsg2/Ptc1 mice) resulted in increased spontaneous BCC formation at 3 and 6 months, respectively.

Background: The objective of this study is to assess group differences in symptom reduction between individuals receiving group cognitive behavioral therapy (G-CBT) and attention bias modification (ABM) compared to their respective control interventions, control therapy (CT), and attention control training (ACT), in a 2 × 2 factorial design.
Methods: A total of 310 treatment-naive children (7-11 years of age) were assessed for eligibility and 79 children with generalized, separation or social anxiety disorder were randomized and received G-CBT (n = 42) or CT (n = 37). Within each psychotherapy group, participants were again randomized to ABM (n = 38) or ACT (n = 41) in a 2 × 2 factorial design resulting in four groups: G-CBT + ABM (n = 21), G-CBT + ACT (n = 21), CT + ABM (n = 17), and CT + ACT (n = 20).

Background/objective: Iron deficiency (ID) is common in overweight and obese individuals (OW/OB) but the mechanism is uncertain. Greater blood volume (BV) in OW/OB may increase hemoglobin (Hb) mass and iron requirements, and confound iron biomarkers by hemodilution. Quantification of BV/PV changes in OW/OB is challenging and a formula to estimate BV/PV based on anthropometric indices would be valuable.

In 2015, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), malignant breast tumors were the first cause of cancer fatality in women (6,273 fatalities) in Mexico, whereas 2,793 fatalities in women were due to ovarian cancer. A total of 5‑10% of breast cancer and 10‑15% of ovarian cancer cases are caused by a hereditary breast‑ovarian cancer syndrome, with mutations predominantly identified in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Recently, the Mexican founder mutation BRCA1 ex9‑12del was identified (deletion of exons 9‑12 with recombination between introns 8‑12).

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by inflammatory-demyelinating events in the central nervous system. Despite more than 40 years of MS research its aetiology remains unknown. This study aims to identify the most frequently reported and consistently regulated molecules in MS in order to generate molecular interaction networks and thereby leading to the identification of deregulated processes and pathways which could give an insight of the underlying molecular mechanisms of MS.

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB; OMIM #226600) is one of the most devastating subtypes of epidermolysis bullosa, a group of skin and mucous membrane blistering disorders often associated with extracutaneous manifestations. RDEB is caused by mutations in COL7A1, the gene encoding type VII collagen (C7), and to date over 700 different mutations in the 8835 nucleotides constituting the open reading frame or adjacent exon-intron boundaries of COL7A1 have been described. We used targeted next-generation sequencing to identify seven previously unreported mutations in a cohort of 17 Mexican patients who were diagnosed with RDEB based on clinical presentation and immunoepitope mapping.
