Right ventricular injury (RVI) in respiratory failure receiving veno-venous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV ECMO) is associated with significant mortality. A scoping review is necessary to map the current literature and guide future research regarding the definition and management of RVI in patients receiving VV ECMO. We searched for relevant publications on RVI in patients receiving VV ECMO in Medline, EMBASE, and Web of Science.

Pancreatic Neuroendocrine tumors (pNETs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms whose tumor biology is still little known. Thanks to next-generation sequencing, pathogenic mutations in base-excision-repair gene and homologous recombination genes and seem to have a role in the development of pNETs. We assumed that Homologous Recombination Deficiency (HRD) could be a critical pathogenetic mechanism for pNETs.

Meditation is a family of ancient and contemporary contemplative mind-body practices that can modulate psychological processes, awareness, and mental states. Over the last 40 years, clinical science has manualised meditation practices and designed various meditation interventions (MIs), that have shown therapeutic efficacy for disorders including depression, pain, addiction, and anxiety. Over the past decade, neuroimaging has examined the neuroscientific basis of meditation practices, effects, states, and outcomes for clinical and non-clinical populations.

Composite resins are the material of choice for direct restorations, and their success depends mainly on their color stability, since discoloration causes color mismatch, and consequent patient dissatisfaction. A single- and a multi-shade resin were compared in order to evaluate their pigmentation after immersion in staining substances and to investigate the effect of the polymerization time on their color stability. Two-hundred-and-forty composite specimens were created, half made of a single-shade (Group ONE, n = 120) and half of a multi-shade composite (Group OXP, n = 120).

Chemotherapy can cause vascular and metabolic liver injury in patients with liver metastases, but scarce data are available. We aimed to (i) describe the prevalence of porto-sinusoidal vascular disorder (PSVD) among patients undergoing resection for liver metastases; and (ii) assess whether liver (LSM) and spleen stiffness measurements could diagnose PSVD and predict postoperative complications. This is a prospective single-center study enrolling consecutive patients undergoing hepatic resection for metastases at a tertiary center.

Non-invasive respiratory support, namely, non-invasive ventilation, continuous positive airway pressure, and high-flow nasal cannula, has been increasingly used worldwide to treat acute hypoxemic respiratory failure, giving the benefits of keeping spontaneous breathing preserved. In this scenario, monitoring and controlling respiratory drive could be helpful to avoid patient self-inflicted lung injury and promptly identify those patients that require an upgrade to invasive mechanical ventilation. In this review, we first describe the physiological components affecting respiratory drive to outline the risks associated with its hyperactivation.

Background & Aims: Non-invasive models stratifying clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH) are limited. Herein, we developed a new non-invasive model for predicting CSPH in patients with compensated cirrhosis and investigated whether carvedilol can prevent hepatic decompensation in patients with high-risk CSPH stratified using the new model.
Methods: Non-invasive risk factors of CSPH were identified via systematic review and meta-analysis of studies involving patients with hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG).
Objective: To describe our own approach using buccal mucosal grafting and to assess the outcome of this approach.
Materials And Methods: A total of 42 patients underwent ventral onlay BMG by a single surgeon between 2017 and 2022. A longitudinal incision along the length of the urethra was made through the anterior vaginal wall and the periurethral fascia was incised to create 2 flaps.

Background And Aims: Baveno VII consensus suggests that screening endoscopy can be spared in patients with compensated cirrhosis when spleen stiffness measurement (SSM) by vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) is ≤40 kPa as they have a low probability of high-risk varices (HRV). Conversely, screening endoscopy is required in all patients with porto-sinusoidal vascular disorder (PSVD). This study aimed to evaluate the performance of SSM-VCTE to rule out HRV in patients with PSVD and signs of portal hypertension.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is typically a self-limiting, acute illness that spreads through the gastrointestinal tract but replicates in the liver. However, chronic infections are possible in immunocompromised individuals. The HEV virion has two shapes: exosome-like membrane-associated quasi-enveloped virions (eHEV) found in circulating blood or in the supernatant of infected cell cultures and non-enveloped virions ("naked") found in infected hosts' feces and bile to mediate inter-host transmission.

Background: The molecular pathways involved in the onset and progression of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) still need to be fully clarified as some are shared with lung cancer development. HOXB7, a member of the homeobox () gene family, has been found involved in various cancers.
Methods: Immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis was run on lung tissue samples from surgical lung biopsy (SLB) of 19 patients with IPF, retrospectively selected from the IPF database of the University Hospital of Modena.

Background: Primitive tracheal tumors represent a rare entity whose management, when unresectable, remains challenging. Primary aim of this study was to explore the survival and the factors influencing prognosis of patients with unresectable primitive tracheal tumor undergoing multimodal treatment integrating interventional bronchoscopy and radiotherapy.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at the University Hospital of Modena (Italy) over a 12-year period (January 2010 to January 2022) analyzing patients with unresectable primary tracheal tumor receiving interventional bronchoscopy treatment followed by radiotherapy.

Patients with acute exacerbation of lung fibrosis with usual interstitial pneumonia (EUIP) pattern are at increased risk for ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) and mortality when exposed to mechanical ventilation (MV). Yet, lack of a mechanical model describing UIP-lung deformation during MV represents a research gap. Aim of this study was to develop a constitutive mathematical model for UIP-lung deformation during lung protective MV based on the stress-strain behavior and the specific elastance of patients with EUIP as compared to that of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and healthy lung.

Introduction And Objectives: Quantifying breathing effort in non-intubated patients is important but difficult. We aimed to develop two models to estimate it in patients treated with high-flow oxygen therapy.
Patients And Methods: We analyzed the data of 260 patients from previous studies who received high-flow oxygen therapy.

Objectives: The management of idiopathic subglottic stenosis (iSGS) poses a clinical challenge due to high recurrence rates following both endoscopic and open approaches, often leading to tracheostomy. The activation of abnormal T-cells and cytokine pathways has been linked to iSGS pathogenesis. Autologous adipose tissue centrifugation yields lipoaspirate, offering optimal anti-inflammatory effects and biocompatibility widely utilized in various medical settings.

Background: Not all hypercapnic COPD patients benefit from home noninvasive ventilation (NIV), and mechanisms through which NIV improves clinical outcomes remain uncertain. We aimed to identify "responders" to home NIV, denoted by a beneficial effect of NIV on arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (), health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and survival, and investigated whether NIV achieves its beneficial effect through an improved .
Methods: We used individual patient data from previous published trials collated for a systematic review.
