In addition to the overall complexity of transcriptional regulation, cells also must take into account the subcellular distribution of these gene products. This is particularly challenging for morphologically complex cells such as neurons. Yet the interaction between cellular morphology and gene expression is poorly understood.

In contrast to the "programmed" nature of apoptosis and autophagy, necrotic cell death has always been believed to be a random, uncontrolled process that leads to the "accidental" death of the cell. This dogma, however, is being challenged and the concept of necrosis also being "programmed" is gaining ground. In particular, mitochondria appear to play a pivotal role in the mediation of programmed necrosis.

Simultaneous inference for a large number, N, of parameters is a challenge. In some situations, such as microarray experiments, researchers are only interested in making inference for the K parameters corresponding to the K most extreme estimates. Hence it seems important to construct simultaneous confidence intervals for these K parameters.

Pig cumulus-oocyte complexes (COC) were cultured in BSA-free NCSU 23 medium containing porcine follicular fluid (10%), cysteine (0.1 mg/ml) and hormonal supplements (eCG and hCG: 10 IU/ml each) for 22 h.

Based on the experimentally determined atomic coordinates for RNA helices and the self-avoiding walks of the P (phosphate) and C4 (carbon) atoms in the diamond lattice for the polynucleotide loop conformations, we derive a set of conformational entropy parameters for RNA pseudoknots. Based on the entropy parameters, we develop a folding thermodynamics model that enables us to compute the sequence-specific RNA pseudoknot folding free energy landscape and thermodynamics. The model is validated through extensive experimental tests both for the native structures and for the folding thermodynamics.

Color image features were computed to characterize the skeletal maturity of beef carcasses based on cartilage ossification in the thoracic vertebrae. A trained neural network was tested for predicting USDA beef maturity grades from image features of ossification. A feature curve was defined to characterize the color variations of an isolated cartilage-bone object.

The Mo≡N bond is conjugated with the organic segment in the novel molecular organic-inorganic hybrid materials that have been obtained by Pd-catalyzed coupling of an iodo-functionalized hexamolybdate anion and an alkyne (see scheme; Ar=4-methylphenyl,3-5-di(tert-butyl)phenyl). The interaction between the polyoxometalate cluster and the organic conjugated system is particularly apparent from the strong red-shifted absorption in the UV/Vis spectrum.

Cumulus-oocyte complexes were cultured in mM199 supplemented with 10% porcine follicular fluid (PFF) and hormonal supplements (PMSG, hCG and estradiol-17beta) for 20 h and then without hormonal supplements for an additional 20 h. In Experiment 1, oocytes were then co-cultured for 6 h with spermatozoa which had been preincubated with 1% PFF (PFF-treated) or without (control).

This study was undertaken to examine the effect of second messengers added to the electroporation medium on electric pulse-induced artificial activation of meiotic Metaphase II porcine oocytes. Six separate experiments evaluated second messengers added to electroporation medium. When added to electroporation medium, neither phospholipase C (PLC: 0 to 2.

There were no differences in germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) among FCS and NPS supplements.

Experiments were conducted to determine the effects of porcine relaxin (pRLX) on cervical dilation and conception rates in postpartum ewes. In Experiment 1, ewes received medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) sponge on day 16 (day 0 = lambing) and 750 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) at sponge removal on day 30. Control ewes received saline and relaxin-treated (RLX) ewes received 0.

The use of tailhead paste and chin-ball markers for estrus detection in beef cows following estrus synchronization was evaluated. The estrous cycles of 85 cows were synchronized with a prostaglandin analogue in a two-injection program. At the time of the second injection, each cow's tailhead was painted with an estrus detection paste and the cows were placed in pastures with four intact bulls with chin-ball markers.

This study was conducted to determine if Escherichia coli endotoxin was absorbed from the equine uterus and if exogenous progesterone and estrogen affected the absorption of intrauterine endotoxin. Six mature anestrous pony mares were used in three consecutive crossover experiments (Periods) with a 14 day recovery between each period. Mares were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups (three mares per group) and received an intrauterine infusion of either saline or endotoxin.

The accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis in swine by rectal palpation and by ultrasound was compared using sows and gilts thirty days or more after breeding. A total of eighty-four pigs were included in this experiment and they were examined an average of thirty-nine days following breeding. Forty-nine animals were slaughtered within a few days of pregnancy examination and thirtyfive were allowed to farrow.
