Over the past fifteen years we have developed and refined the analytical chromatographic methodologies using reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography and UV-photodiode array detection (RPLC-UV) for the detection and measurement of the major and modified nucleosides in nucleic acids and biological fluids. RPLC-UV nucleoside analysis as it has now evolved is a powerful new research tool to aid investigators in the fields of biochemical and biomedical research. This RPLC-UV nucleoside method can resolve more than 65 nucleosides in a single analysis with "run-to-run" peak retention variations of less than 1%.

The life space drawing was prospectively assessed as a predictor of 12-month morbidity in 27 white female participants of a clinical trial. Women who subsequently experienced a high rate of self-reported morbidity (greater than or equal to 3 restricted-activity days per month) had a higher proportion of interpersonal relationships characterized by poor communication than did women with less than or equal to 2 restricted activity days per month. The quality of the relationship with a spouse/significant other appeared to be a particularly strong predictor of morbidity in this small self-selected group of women.

A major objective of epidemiologic investigation is to determine whether or not an association between an exposure and a condition exists in a human population. The presence of such an association cna be explored using three distinct strategies, the cohort, the case-control, and the cross-sectional approaches. This paper describes each of these research designs and discusses their advantages and disadvantages.

Self-mutilation is a more common behavior than generally realized; its prevalence may be 750 per 100,000. From the responses of 250 subjects to a Self-Harm Behavior Survey we have learned that self-mutilation typically begins in early adolescence and may assume a chronic course characterized by severe psychosocial morbidity. Some chronic self-mutilators already are heavy and generally dissatisfied users of mental health services.

In a community sample of 150 adolescents 14-16 years old, 25 (16.7%) were found to be well adjusted on the basis of structured interviews with the youths and their parents. The personalities of these subjects were found to be different and their self-concepts better than those of the remaining sample.
