Malocclusions are common craniofacial malformations that cause quality of life and health problems if left untreated. Unfortunately, the current treatment for severe skeletal malocclusion is invasive surgery. Developing improved therapeutic options requires a deeper understanding of the cellular mechanisms responsible for determining jaw bone length.

It is not clear as to whether weight bearing and ambulation may affect bone growth. Our goal was to study the role of mechanical loading (one of the components of ambulation) on endochondral ossification and longitudinal bone growth. Thus, we applied cyclical, biologically relevant strains for a prolonged time period (4 weeks) to one tibia of juvenile mice, while using the contralateral one as an internal control.

At the beginning of 2023, a survey was administered to full-time women faculty in predoctoral dental programs in the United States. The survey instrument employed a structured format along with open-ended questions to capture qualitative data.

Introduction: The global pandemic prompted changes in health science education affecting both teaching and learning. This multi-institutional study assesses the near-term implications of these changes on faculty and faculty development. The project goals were to: (1) describe faculty experiences of teaching during the pandemic; (2) identify ways to sustain new pedagogical approaches, (3) describe the types of support faculty members need, and (4) offer recommendations to enhance oral health professions education.

The American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) defines direct access as the ability of a dental hygienist to initiate treatment based on their assessment of patient's needs without the specific authorization of a dentist, treat the patient without the physical presence of a dentist, and maintain a provider-patient relationship. In 2000 there were nine direct access states; currently there are 42 states that have authorized some form of direct access. The ADHA has been instrumental in these legislative initiatives through strong advocacy efforts.

Introduction: The effects on offspring craniofacial bone morphology and accretion because of altered maternal exposure to dietary components such as calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) are unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the changes in offspring skull morphology and tissue mineral density (TMD), including sex-specific changes, with exposure to a maternal diet high in Ca-to-P levels during gestation and lactation in mice.
Methods: Time-mated FVB wild-type mice were fed a normal or experimental diet during gestation until weaning.

Comparing patterns of performance and kinematics across behavior, development and phylogeny is crucial to understand the evolution of complex musculoskeletal systems such as the feeding apparatus. However, conveying 3D spatial data of muscle orientation throughout a feeding cycle, ontogenetic pathway or phylogenetic lineage is essential to understanding the function and evolution of the skull in vertebrates. Here, we detail the use of ternary plots for displaying and comparing the 3D orientation of muscle data.

Objective: The primary aim of this study was to determine the cardiovascular safety of topical racemic epinephrine pellets by measuring heart rate, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and mean arterial pressure in children receiving dental care under general anesthesia. The secondary aim was to assess clinical efficacy by measuring time to reach adequate hemostasis.
Methods: For this pilot study utilizing a split-mouth randomized design, 13 patients requiring prefabricated zirconia crowns on both primary maxillary first molars were recruited.

Introduction: Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to replicate human intelligence to perform prediction and complex decision making in health care and has significantly increased its presence and relevance in various tasks and applications in dentistry, especially endodontics. The aim of this review was to discuss the current endodontic applications of AI and potential future directions.
Methods: Articles that have addressed the applications of AI in endodontics were evaluated for information pertinent to include in this narrative review.

Current adhesives bond to dentin via a micro-interlocking mechanism within the hybrid layer. Besides such mechanical retention, bonding to dentin would benefit from additional chemical interaction between collagen and resin. This study aims to synthesize a novel light-curable collagen crosslinker methacrylate (MA) functionalized grapeseed extract (GSE) and to assess MAGSE's ability to crosslink dentin collagen in a clinically relevant setting as well as its role in light-cure as a resin.

Teebi hypertelorism syndrome (THS; OMIM 145420) is a rare craniofacial disorder characterized by hypertelorism, prominent forehead, short nose with broad or depressed nasal root. Some cases of THS have been attributed to SPECC1L variants. Homozygous variants in CDH11 truncating the transmembrane and intracellular domains have been implicated in Elsahy-Waters syndrome (EWS; OMIM 211380) with hypertelorism.

Background: In-depth analysis of the HIV pandemic at its epicenter in the Congo basin has been hampered by 40 years of political unrest and lack of functional public health infrastructure. In recent surveillance studies (2017-18), we found that the prevalence of HIV in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (11%) far exceeded previous estimates.
Methods: 10,457 participants were screened in Kinshasa with rapid tests from 2017-2019.
The anatomy of the mammalian visual system, from the retina to the neocortex, is organized hierarchically. However, direct observation of cellular-level functional interactions across this hierarchy is lacking due to the challenge of simultaneously recording activity across numerous regions. Here we describe a large, open dataset-part of the Allen Brain Observatory-that surveys spiking from tens of thousands of units in six cortical and two thalamic regions in the brains of mice responding to a battery of visual stimuli.

Background: Diagnosis of people living with HIV (PLHIV) is the first step toward achieving the new Fast Track Strategy to end AIDS by 2030: 95-95-95. However, reaching PLHIV is especially difficult in resource-limited settings such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where reliable prevalence data is lacking. This study evaluated the prevalence of HIV in patients in the urban Kinshasa area.

The human dentin-enamel junction (DEJ) is a natural junction that unites two dissimilar mineralized tissues in the human tooth: enamel and dentin. DEJ plays a critical role in maintaining structural and functional integrity of the tooth. However, its structure, chemical composition and function remain unclear and controversial.
